Harmon, Harley, 1882-1947

Harley A. Harmon was born in 1882 in Wier City, Kansas. His father, Elmer Harmon, was an attorney who moved the family to Los Angeles, California when Harmon was nine years old. In 1903, Harley A. Harmon unsuccessfully ran for Los Angeles City Clerk. In 1905, Harley A. Harmon joined the Union Pacific Railroad as an engineer and drove one of the first construction trains to Las Vegas, Nevada, where Harley A. Harmon was stationed in 1908.

Hayes, Grace, 1895-1989

Grace Hayes was born on August 23, 1896 in Springfield, Missouri. She moved to San Francisco, California at the age of ten, and began to sing at nightclubs at the age of fourteen. In 1912 Hayes married Joseph Lind, and their son Joseph Conrad Lind (better known as Peter Lind Hayes) was born in 1915. She married twice after Lind; first to Charlie Foy, then to Robert Evan Hopkins. Hayes is best known for her career in motion pictures from 1929 to 1950, primarily for King of Jazz (1930) and Zis Boom Bah (1941).

Hecht, Chic, 1928-2006

Nevada businessman and Republican politician Jacob "Chic" Hecht (1928-2006) was elected to the U.S. Senate in November 1982. As a senator, he used quiet diplomacy skills to help Soviet Jews gain permission to emigrate. During the Korean War, Hecht served as a counterintelligence agent in Berlin. After the war he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada and operated several businesses. Hecht also represented Clark County in the Nevada State Senate for eight years.
