Abstract

The John R. Wilbanks Antarctica Research Papers (approximately 1973-1983) consist of research and grant files kept by Wilbanks, a professor of geoscience at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Materials primarily document Wilbanks' field work in West Antarctica, including Marie Byrd Land. The collection also contains maps, photographs, field notebooks, and issues of the American Polar Society's The Polar Times.

The collection also includes Weide's notes from classes and research from when he was a graduate student at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Abstract

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Speeches collection (1957-1992) contains copies of speech transcripts given by various faculty members from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The collection includes speeches given at the University Forum Lecture Series as well as other events and conferences held in Las Vegas, Nevada. The collection also contains speeches and programs given at dedication ceremonies, ranging from the cornerstone ceremony of Frazier Hall to the Moyer Student Union.

Vicki Cassman Faculty Papers and UNLV Memorabilia

Abstract

The Vicki Cassman Faculty Papers and UNLV Memorabilia (approximately 1980-2004) are comprised of commemorative University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) memorabilia and papers pertaining to UNLV's 25th and 40th anniversaries as well as a 30th anniversary video tape for the Moyer Student Union. The collection also contains papers from the Department of Anthropology and Ethnic Studies history project (ANT 410/610) commemorating UNLV faculty member Claude Warren. The memorabilia in the collection includes a commemorative mug, golf ball, playing cards, and a media kit for the Sam Boyd Stadium and the Thomas & Mack Center.

In this interview, Shugart discusses her arrival to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1945. Shugart then recalls Boulder (Hoover) Dam, the Las Vegas climate, and her educational experiences at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Shugart later discusses entertainment in Las Vegas and recreational activities around the city.

Oral history interview with Gladys and Lester Simmons conducted by their grandson, James L. Moore, on February 26, 1979 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Mr. Simmons discusses moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1945 to work on the Union Pacific Railroad. He describes the company culture, railroad lines, and the company's shift in focus to freight transport. Mr. and Mrs. Simmons talk about the construction and growth of Nevada Southern University (University of Nevada, Las Vegas) as well as the overall growth of the city of Las Vegas.

Dickinson Library at University of Nevada, Las Vegas and later in Lied Library, and helping to implement and update various databases. She briefly discusses her involvement with Hillel and the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas.

Oral history interview with Lonnie D. Spight conducted by David Emerson on May 08, 2007 for the UNLV @ 50 Oral History Project. In this interview, Lonnie D. Spight discusses being hired to teach physics at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Physics Department in 1970. He also discusses serving as chair of the department several times, working on solar energy and far- field microwave analysis, and helping set up safety standards for laser technology.

Jerome J. Vallen oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Jerome J. Vallen conducted by James Shaw on February 27, 1979 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, Vallen discusses his career as the dean of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas' Hotel Administration College, a position he occupied at the time of this interview. Vallen discusses program funding, how UNLV's program compares with Cornell University's hotel administration program, and the difficulty the university faced establishing a program with newer educational concepts compared to some other majors which had been around for much longer, such as the math or sciences departments. Vallen then explains how they assisted students in finding jobs in the hotel industry, as well as his plans to grow the program and construct a dedicated building for the program on campus.
