Oral history interview with Jimmy Lee conducted by Vanessa Concepcion, Kristel Peralta, and Stefani Evans on May 25, 2021 for Reflections: The Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project.

Jimmy shares his family's history as entertainers and producers in Korea and their migration to the United States when Jimmy was six years old. He talks about their move to Durham, North Carolina and their relocation to Las Vegas, his education, and his current business, mentorship, and philanthropic pursuits.

Oral history interview with Aaron Shayne Manfredi conducted by Barbara Tabach on December 8, 2021 for the Veterans Oral History Project of Southern Nevada.

Aaron discusses enlisting in the United States Navy after graduating high school and his service from 1993-1996. He talks about his education, his advanced degrees, and his scholarship and service as a University of Nevada, Las Vegas alumnus and President of the UNLV Alumni Veterans Club. Aaron also shares his employment history and current entrepreneurial pursuits as a real estate agent and owner of a landscaping company.

Oral history interview with Joanna Rivas Nino conducted by Dr. Norma Lisa Flores on October 19, 2018 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. In this interview, Joanna Rivas Nino shares her early childhood experiences and her family history, discussing her family's move from the United States back to Zacatecas, Mexico and the differences between the two countries. At the age of fourteen, she came back to the United States. Joanna relates her difficulties regarding cultural assimiliation and her experiences in the United States with racial discrimination. She came to Las Vegas, Nevada in 2016 and she details her time at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, both as a student and an employee. She explains the importance of personal and community development, as well as how both of those concepts affect her own life.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Alma Vining conducted by Barbara Tabach, Nathalie Martinez, and Laurents Banuelos-Benitez on February 13, 2019 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. In this interview, Vining shares what it was like growing up as a child of Mexican immigrants. She talks about her childhood in McAllen, Texas, disclosing her experiences with racial discrimination as a child and as she grew into adulthood. She stresses the importance of education and lifelong learning in relation to her career as a teacher and school principal. Vining moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1972 and jumped into the community with her involvement in Nevada Association of Latin Americans (NALA) and on the television program, Minor Key. She shares her experiences earning her Master's Degree in Education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Vining talks about her teaching career and the 30 years of experience gained in the Clark County School District.

Abstract

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Department of Athletic Records consist of UNLV sports memorabilia, programs, magazines, media guides, and newsletters from the athletics department. The collection has materials documenting both women and men's teams including basketball, swimming and diving, and golf. Other teams include track and field, cheer and dance, and softball. There are also materials that document Jerry Tarkanian's role coaching the men's basketball team.

Abstract

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Division of Educational Outreach Records (1971-2019) contain correspondence, planning information, promotional materials, photographs, and newspaper clippings about the history of the division and commemorative events such as the 25th and 40th anniversaries. The majority of the collection materials are comprised of course catalogs, directories, student journals, member handbooks, scrapbooks, and council meeting minutes for the division's lifelong learning programs for nontraditional students: the Extended Education Center for Lifelong Learning (EXCELL) and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). Materials also include digital files of jazz performances from OLLI's Jazz Appreciation class, a video interview about OLLI, and recording of an OLLI panel featuring World War II veterans.

Abstract

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas College of Education Records (1956-2012) document the creation of the College of Education at Nevada Southern University (NSU) and later the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) from approximately the mid-1950s through the 1970s. The records include faculty meeting minutes, bylaws, reports, and program information. The collection includes administrative records kept by former faculty member, Dr. John Dettre, that date from the 1970s through the 1980s detailing the establishment and growth of the College of Education at UNLV. Also included are photographs from the 1982 Lilly Fong Excellence in Student Teaching Awards and oral history interviews conducted by Jerry Landwer, Professor of Sports Education Leadership, of faculty members and administrators who helped establish UNLV in the 1950s and 1960s. Also included is a scrapbook of photographs documenting faculty, staff, and student assistants at various events held by the Department of Educational Psychology & Higher Education from the 1980s.

Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering Records

Abstract

The Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering Records contain materials dating from approximately 1968 to 2017 that document the establishment of the School of Engineering and later the Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering School. Materials include records of the Nevada Development Authority Partners for Industry through Engineering and Education (PiE2) program during the 1980s that was headed by Bob Gore of Summa Corporation (formerly known as the Howard Hughes Corporation). Collection records also include samples of class listings, phone directories, degree information, college rules and bylaws, and fact sheets and brochures for different engineering degree programs at UNLV. Materials also include accreditation questionnaires from 1989, 1990, and 1992. Also included are promotional brochures and pamphlets for the school from 2015 to 2017.
