Abstract
The Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering Records contain materials dating from approximately 1968 to 2017 that document the establishment of the School of Engineering and later the Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering School. Materials include records of the Nevada Development Authority Partners for Industry through Engineering and Education (PiE2) program during the 1980s that was headed by Bob Gore of Summa Corporation (formerly known as the Howard Hughes Corporation). Collection records also include samples of class listings, phone directories, degree information, college rules and bylaws, and fact sheets and brochures for different engineering degree programs at UNLV. Biographical / Historical Note
UNLV's School of Engineering was formally established in 1976 as a part of the College of Science. Throughout the 1980s the University of Nevada Board of Regents approved several new undergraduate and graduate degree programs for the School of Engineering including civil engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering. The Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering was formed in 1988 and in 1989 the Thomas T. Beam Engineering Complex was completed giving the college's programs a single multidisciplinary space.
Doctoral programs became available in all four academic departments of the College of Engineering in 1990 and the Science and Engineering Building opened in 2009. As of 2022, the Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering is home to several research centers and laboratories including the Applied Geophysics Center, Center for Energy Research (CER), Center for Information Technology and Algorithms, Center for Materials and Structures, Center for Mechanical and Environmental Systems Technology, Energy Materials Interaction Technology Initiative of Nevada, Nevada Center for Advanced Computation Methods (NCACM), Nevada Nanotechnology Center, and the Nevada University Transportation Center.
