Biographical / Historical Note
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Architecture is a department included in the College of Fine Arts, located at the Paul B. Sogg Architecture Building at 4505 South Maryland Parkway, Las Vegas, Nevada. The school was first known as the College of Architecture, Construction Management, and Planning when it was first established in 1986, and was placed under the Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering in 1988. In 1989, the University Board of Regents approved a graduate professional degree program in architecture. The first four degrees (Bachelor of Science in Architecture) were awarded in 1993, and by 1996, the program had awarded two Master of Architecture degrees. In 1994, the Board of Regents separated the Architecture Studies Program from the College of Engineering into its own autonomous academic unit, that contained the programs of Architecture, Construction Management, Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning, and Interior Architecture. Upon the appointment of Dr. Carol Harter as UNLV President in 1996, the programs were reorganized as Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Architecture and Design, and Urban and Regional Planning under the School of Architecture.
In 1995, while the program acted out of temporary modules (trailers), the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) noted the facilities to be inadequate for professional design education, causing the program to fail at meeting the criterion for accreditation. Through a design competition, the $8.25 million 75,000 square foot Paul B. Sogg Architecture Building was constructed by Swisher & Hall Architects (later known as SH Architecture) and Tibesar Construction. The building broke ground on September 4th, 1996 and was completed in Fall 1997. On October 25, 1997, NAAB voted for a full five-year term of accreditation to the UNLV Architecture Program. The school has since continued providing educational opportunities for students in architecture, interior architecture, and landscape architecture.
