Preciado, Mirna

Mirna Preciado was born July 21, 1956 and raised in Tijuana, Mexico. When her family decided to immigrate in 1980, she decided to reach for her American dream. Preciado’s husband wanted her to be a stay-at-home mom, but the idea of working and buying her own bread intrigued her. She became a waitress at the new Margarita’s Restaurant in the Frontier Hotel. Though she liked her work, she was bothered by the other workers with requests to join the Culinary Union Local 226. Soon, those workers became her guardian angels.

Weil, Aubrey Bud

Aubrey “Bud” Weil was born in Los Angeles, California. He worked as a disc jockey in Mexico after serving in the military during World War II. In 1947, he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada to work at KLAS, but his search landed him at KENO, a radio station owned by Max and Laura Belle Kelch. Weil’s show afforded him entry to stars performing in town, including Sophie Tucker, Sammy Davis, Jack Benny, The Mills Brother, Rosemary Clooney, Leno Horne, Joey Lewis and many other.

Candel, Sandra, 1968-

Sandra Candel is a native of Guadalajara, Mexico, where she was raised by her maternal grandparents and extended family. She describes what she refers to as “a legacy of migrants” within her family including her often absent mother.

As a child she was instilled with a love of education and the value of hard work. As a young adult, she migrated to the United States, southern California specifically. There she joined her mother and began her higher education.
