Abstract

Oral history interview with Jose Leonardo Martinez conducted by Barbara Tabach and Nathalie Martinez on August 19 and 29, 2020 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project.

Session 1: Jose discusses his childhood and what it was like growing up during the Salvadoran Civil War. He recounts the dangers he's faced and how he made his way to the United States after traveling through Guatemala and Mexico. Subjects discussed include: Salvadoran Civil War; Ciudad Arce, El Salvador; Guatemala; Mexico; Los Angeles, California.

Dr. Alvaro Vergara-Mery oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Dr. Alvaro Vergara-Mery conducted by Barbara Tabach on October 28, 2020 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. Alvaro discusses his personal history and his upbringing in both Chile and the United Kingdom before immigrating to the United States; due to political unrest in Chile, he moved to the U.K. where his mother was born before attending university in the United States.

Porter Family Papers

Abstract

The Porter Family Papers (1857-1927) contain a New Testament Bible and assorted papers relating to the Porter family and their related merchandise business which operated between Southern California, Rhyolite, Nevada, and Chicago, Illinois. Hiram D. and Louis D. Porter owned and operated a general store in Rhyolite, Nevada in the early 20th century during the mining boom. Materials include telegrams, correspondence and money orders for H. D. & L. D. Porter General Merchandise and Porter family history documents.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Laura Sussman conducted by Barbara Tabach on October 29, 2020 for The Great Pause: Las Vegas Chronicles of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Laura moved to Las Vegas in 1990. She and her wife, Wendy Kraft, own the Kraft-Sussman funeral home in Las Vegas. Laura talks of her work as a funeral director and in the community as President of the Jewish Family Services Agency. She also discusses the impacts of COVID-19 she's witnessed on Las Vegas residents.

Born and raised in Southern California, Larry moved to Las Vegas in 1995 to work in the funeral services industry. He describes the changes he has seen during his career during the past 40 years with particular regard to recent challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
