Abstract

Oral history interview with Jacquita Davis, Sandra Sager, Ilene Bittle, Dorothy Swackhamer conducted by Claytee D. White on January 19, 2017 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Davis, Sager, Bittle, and Swackhamer discuss their early lives and membership in the Beta Sigma Phi sorority. They talk about the organizations philanthropy work, assisting the homeless, and funding for the sorority. The group describes the changing roles of women since the 1940s, and the sorority’s involvement in Henderson, Nevada.

Victor Chicas describes his childhood in El Salvador, sharing what it was like to grow up before and during the Salvadoran Civil War. Victor was very involved in the politics at the time, and was frequently caught up in dangerous protests against the Salvadoran police forces. Chicas talks about his experiences protesting at his university and about the riots that happened there.

In this interview, Erma Linda Rivera discusses her early life as a grandchild of immigrants. She shares her experiences growing up in a mining town in Arizona. After marrying, both Erma Linda and her husband Jose became federal civil servants. This would lead Erma Linda Rivera to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1984.

Lidia Bonilla oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Lidia Bonilla conducted by Maribel Estrada Calderón, Laurents Bañuelos-Benitez, and Barbara Tabach on February 19, 2019 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. Bonilla begins the interview by discussing her and her family's early life in Panama. Bonilla shares her feelings on the United States' involvement in Panamanian politics as she grew up. She moved to the United States in 1976 and immigrated after her marriage to a United States citizen. While married, she traveled with her husband to his various military postings, including Spain.
