Biographical / Historical Note

Dr. Rachel Volberg is a trained sociologist who has been conducting epidemiological research on gambling and problem gambling since 1985. She was the first researcher to receive funding from the United States National Institutes of Health to conduct studies on the prevalence of problem gambling in the country’s population. In her career spanning four decades, Volberg has directed or consulted on numerous studies in the United States and internationally, published extensively, and served as an advisor to governments and private sector organizations on gambling legalization, public policy strategies to support problem gamblers, and the epidemiology of problem gambling. Volberg served as the principal investigator on the Massachusetts Gaming Commission-funded Social and Economic Impacts of Gambling in Massachusetts (SEIGMA) study from its inception in 2013 until its conclusion in 2025.

In addition to her work as a research professor, Volberg is the president and principal investigator of Gemini Research, a consulting firm that “specializes in managing and reporting on studies of gambling and problem gambling in the community.” In this capacity, Volberg has conducted research and published reports on behalf of state, provincial, and national government agencies around the world to investigate problem gambling in various populations.

As of 2026, Dr. Rachel Volberg is Professor Emerita of Epidemiology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
