Schafer started drawing cartoons for her own amusement in 2002, resulting in 109 cartoons in two collections: "Santa’s Other Workshop" and "Waiting for Sage Advice" all focused on the odd couple of Don and Delilah, two desert tortoises from Southern Nevada. They were originally named Max and Maxine and were inspired by two tortoises at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Visitor Center tortoise enclosure. However, the tortoises names had to be changed to Don and Delilah due to the insistence and resistance from the Bureau of Land Management staff.
