Biographical / Historical Note

The Nevada Women's History Project (NWHP) was created in 1996 with the mission to "collect and disseminate information about Nevada women of every race, class, and ethnic background." The NWHP was founded by former Clark County State Senator Jean Ford with the intent of highlighting important roles women played throughout the history of Nevada.

The need to collect materials on Nevada women was first discussed by Jean Ford and a small group of women at a weekend retreat hosted by Beverly Hubbard at Lake Tahoe, California in 1993. In a later meeting, nineteen women signed up to become involved and in February 1995, an invitation was issued to various nonprofit organizations and governmental agencies to attend a more inclusive meeting. In March 1996, the project officially launched in Las Vegas, and the project later evolved into distinct Northern and Southern regions.

Some of the projects accomplished by the NWHP during its early years include research registries, the establishment of a permanent office, workshops on oral history, living history presentations, preservation workshops, walking tours, annual conferences, book assessment projects, and the development of a website.

The organization has published over 175 oral histories, written 150 biographies, and created numerous videos that highlight the role of women in Nevada history. The Nevada Women's History Project remains active as of 2018.
