The Nevada Women’s Archives was founded in 1994 to collect, preserve, and provide access to primary source materials documenting women’s activities in the development of Nevada. It is located within the Special Collections Department of the Lied Library at UNLV and houses more than 250 collections.
A collaborative group of library staff, History Department faculty, and former state legislator Jean Ford (who had created a similar archive at UNR) developed plans to create and sustain the initiative. Materials from women’s activities in political, social, cultural, religious, commercial and economic life were actively collected. It includes legal papers, business and personal correspondence, family memorabilia, and family photo albums. Once collections are processed and cataloged, the information is accessible not only to students and researchers locally, but internationally.
