Abstract

The American Association of University Women, Las Vegas Branch Records (1934-2016) is comprised of organizational records including member directories, bylaws, charters, meeting minutes, financial records, guest registers, and newsletters. The collection also includes reports and fundraising information published by AAUW. Also included is a script for a play about the founding of the national organization, bulletin board cut-outs, programmming materials, and a significant amount of Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) material.

Scope and Contents Note

American Association of University Women, Las Vegas, Nevada Branch Records (1934-2016) contain directories, bylaws, charters, meeting minutes, financial records, guest registers and newsletters of the Las Vegas Branch. The majority of the material in the collection dates from the late 1960s to the mid 1990s. Also included is a script for a play about the founding of the national organization, bulletin board cut-outs, and public information campaigns. There is also a large amount of materials relating to the Equal Rights Amendment, including information about how the ERA would affect men and women, how to promote ERA, and what groups opposed the ERA.

Biographical / Historical Note

The Las Vegas Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) was founded in 1940 with the purpose to “unite graduates of regionally accredited institutions in order to promote equity, education, intellectual growth, individual worth, and development of opportunities for women and girls.” The Las Vegas branch members have been involved in many national and community issues over the years. Some of the major programs have dealt with Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), Get Out the Vote, Grass Roots Lobby Day at the State Legislature, public education about environmental issues, child care facilities, voting campaigns, teen pregnancy, and scholarships for students. AAUW Las Vegas members meet monthly and participate in various interest groups.

Collection was processed in 1996 by Mary Pate. In 2017 Joyce Moore edited the collection description and published the ArchivesSpace finding aid. In 2020, Tammi Kim accessioned the 2019 addition and updated the finding aid.
