Activity Description

The teacher will read the plot dimensions aloud without allowing students to see the plots. While doing so, students will draw how they imagine the plots would look. Once completed, show students the plot maps and determine whether their renditions resemble that of the plot map. Determine what additional mathematical information may have contributed to ensuring the accuracy of their drawings.

Standards Addressed

  1. Geography
    1. Grades 6-8 Standards
      1. G5.6-8.1: Use map elements, including scale, to identify and locate physical and human features in the United States and the world.
      2. G5.6-8.5: Create and compare maps of about human and physical features around the world for purpose, accuracy, content, form, and design.
    2. Grades 9-12 Standards
      1. G5.9-12.2: Analyze and interpret geographic information by selecting appropriate maps, map projections, and other representations, i.e., urban planning, national parks.
      2. G5.9-12.3: Apply concepts and models of spatial organization and use quantitative methods to identify and make decisions about geographic information.
      3. G5.9-12.4: Analyze a variety of complex maps, i.e., topographic, demographic, and land use, to acquire geographic information.
      4. G5.9-12.8: Select and design maps, graphs, diagrams, tables, or charts to organize geographic information using a variety of technologies.
  2. Science
    1. Grades 6-8 Standards
      1. N.8.A.7: Students know there are multiple methods for organizing items and information.
  3. Mathematics
    1. Grade 7 Standards
      1. 2.7.1: Use and create tables, charts, and graphs to extend a pattern in order to describe a linear rule, including integer values.
      2. 4.7.1: Identify, classify, compare, and draw regular and irregular polygons.
      3. 4.7.2: Make scale drawings using ratios and proportions.
      4. 4.7.3: Demonstrate translation, reflection, and rotation using coordinate geometry and models.
      5. 4.7.9: Make and test conjectures to explain observed mathematical relationships and to develop logical arguments to justify conclusions.
      6. 5.7.2: Interpret graphical representations of data to describe patterns, trends, and data distribution.
    2. Grade 12 Standards
      1. 3.12.3: Select and use appropriate measurement tools, techniques, and formulas to solve problems in mathematical and practical situations.
      2. 3.12.5: Determine the measure of unknown dimensions, angles, areas, and volumes using relationships and formulas to solve problems.
      3. 4.12.8: Solve problems by drawing and/or constructing geometric figures to demonstrate geometric relationships.
