Biographical / Historical Note

Founded in 1965, the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Southern Nevada is a government agency that maintains and provides public mass transit throughout Southern Nevada, with a focus on the Las Vegas Valley. Originally named the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for Southern Nevada, the agency was renamed in 1981 to its current name. The agency creates transit plans and programs to meet federal air quality standards, improve transportation efficiency, and meet the demands of Southern Nevada’s changing demographics by adjusting public transit routes, coordinating bicycle and pedestrian paths, and holding public planning meetings to discuss changes. The RTC also manages fund distribution related to regional street and highway construction, as well as county sales taxes designated for transportation.
