Biographical / Historical Note
In 1951 the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) established an extension program in Las Vegas, Nevada. Due to the success of this program, the Nevada Board of Regents founded the Southern Regional Division of the University of Nevada (Nevada Southern University) in 1954. In 1969, as Nevada Southern University gained independence from UNR and became the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs was created to oversee general administration of all academic units on campus. In 1986 the office was renamed the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs/Provost and in 2019 the office was renamed the Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Programs. In 1988 the office was abolished and the position of Senior Vice President and Provost was created. As of 2018, Diane Z. Chase is the Executive Vice President and Provost. She is responsible for a team that includes academic officers, deans, and vice provosts who oversee UNLV’s overall academic mission.
