Oral history interview with Valerie Murzl conducted by Claytee D. White, Stefani Evans, and Kristian Taketomo for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. Murzl talks about her early life growing up in the Bronx, New York as the daughter of Scottish-Irish and Italian Catholics. Growing up, Murzl watched her father fight for the rights of others and stand firmly against discrimination. Inspired by that and his love for education, Murzl wanted to go to college, but ultimately decided against pursuing higher education. She started her professional career as a secretary and then moved to a radio and aviation company. Murzl moved to Hawaii which led her on a ten-year career with Marriott Hotels. She became heavily involved with the community in Maui and left an impact on local politics. Through Marriott, Murzl moved around the country before deciding to move closer to her parents in Las Vegas, Nevada. She joined Station Casinos in 1997 and worked there until 2019. Murzl describes being in high-level executive board meetings and the stresses that came along with that. Murzl also discusses being responsible for building the first childcare centers on Station Casino properties. Finally retiring in 2019, Murzl stays involved with various groups like the Mob Museum and enjoys traveling to Mexico. Digital audio available; no transcript available.
