The program continues Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. with a creative Shabbat morn?ing Service. Rabbi Marder?s topic will be ?Reform Judaism Meets the 21st Century: Controversies, Challenges and the Future of our Movement." Join us for the most exciting holiday of the year - Simchat Torah! On Friday, October 4th, we will celebrate this holi?day with our Torah march and unrolling of the Torah for all to see. On this special evening, we will also bless our new Con- secrants (new students in Kindergarten through the 2nd grade) and enjoy songs by our Junior Choir. ?Torah WisdomSpeakstoEvery Generation? ?Turn it and turn it, for all is within.? This quote from the Talmud describes the traditional view of knowledge found within our Torah. Traditionalists believe that all knowledge is to be found within the Torah. Taken in a literal sense, perhaps to us modems this seems to stretch things just a bit...but on the other hand...taken in the metaphorical sense, it is true indeed. The Torah has been and always will be more than simply a chronicle of biblical history and laws from a by-gone era. Torah for us is the essence of Judaism. Today, there is a great deal of talk about ?family vdues.? For us, the talk has been on ?Torah values.? But even this notion has changed over the centuries. The beauty of our tradition is that it is a dynamic one. Each generation of Jewry is J challenged to interpret the Torah tradition in accordance with the challenges of its own age. Just as Rabbi Hillel interpreted the Torah for his day-creating new institutions and manners within accepted tradition to ease the burden on his people-so too do we today look for ways Torah may speak to us. It is this notion that remains both our weakness and our strength. For too many Jews, the fact that Torah INFORMS rather than COMPELS means that they can choose whatever suits their fancy or whims. Nothing could be a more disturbing distortion of Reform theolo?gy. If we are to be serious about our religion, then it must do more than inform us, it must inspire us to reach beyond our core values. The gift of Torah aoes have everything within; everything that is truly important? for Torah touches issues related to life and death, our relationsj^fc with our fellow human beings; a sense W tradition and history; and mitzvot...a system of ethical laws that help guide us in our path towards a higher humanity. This month we will celebrate our annual Simchat Torah services on Friday October 4th at 7:30 p.m... As always this proves to be one of our most popular services. Along with the consecration of our new religious school students, we also will march around with our Torahs (all FIVE of them!) And unroll our Torah the length of our Sanctuary and beyond for a dramatic Torah reading. And for those who enjoy studying Torah, our Tuesday study group begins October 1st at noon. Offered every other week, feel free to drop in throughout the year for an hour of shmooz and study session in our library. As the New Year encourages a return to our tradition, let us all seek wisdom and strength from our tradition of Torah. 9{a6Bi Sanford Congregation Ner Tamid October 1996 Bob Unger President Drew Levy VP Administration Allan Nathanson VP Ways & Means Jacky Rosen VP Membership David Stahl VP Religious Activities Scott Stolberg VP Education Scott Dockswell VP Social Alan Mann Treasurer Debra Kaner Secretary Sylvia Beller Trustee Stacey Yahraus Trustee Ruth Urban Trustee David Mendelson Trustee Jon Sparer Trustee Rita Goldstein Trustee Esther Saltzman Trustee Kenny Epstein Trustee Janis Rounds Sisterhood Jeff Markewich Brotherhood Helen Zliser Golden Chai Joey Unger NTTY Shayna Unger TNT Jerry Gordon Past President Cal Lewis Past President Eileen Kollins Past President Kenneth Schnitzer Past President Dr. David Wasserman Past President .Dr. Steve Kollins Past President [Michael Cherry Past President Eugene Kirshbaum* Past President Leo Wilner Advisor Rabbi Sanford Akselrad Ex Officio *Deceased HIGH ENERGY! There is no better way to describe our Board of Trustees. Our most recent meetings have been very exciting for me to watch. The only problem is that I have to lead the meetings and try to get to all of the topics our Board members want to discuss. Our meetings have been exhilarating. Our membership is soaring. During the budget?ing process, we anticipated 50 new member families would join during the entire fiscal year. To our amazement, we added 55 new families during the 30 days between our Au?gust and September board meetings alone. Our Sisterhood and Brotherhood are both at record membership levels. Opening day for our religious school was overwhelming. We are well on our way to the largest school attendance we have seen. If these growth statistics were all I had to report to the Congregation, then I would not be so highly energized. My ener?gy comes from the Board. Our Congregation is well represented by this group. They are all excited, dedicated, thoughtful members who are, above all, committed to bringing Ner Tamid to a new level. Each of our offic?T ot Shabbat October 25 at 6:30pm is Tot Shabbat Time! Tot Shabbat is a special Shabbat religious program geared especially for tiny tots, 3-6 years of age and their siblings. Cantorial Soloist Bella Feldman will conduct a wonderfully exciting worship experience followed by arts and crafts and a snack. Mark your calendars now. Return the form below to the Temple or or call the Temple office to make your reservation. Give your children fun-filled and meaningful Shabbat. NAME- ADDRESS. PHONE__ TINY TOT NAME. Sponsored by Sisterhood ers and committee chairpersons are per?forming at lull speed. Each of them can?t wait to tell the Board about their particular events or committees work. We openly discuss current problems and solutions in a very constructive way which further en?hances communication and creates more energy. Our calendar is jam packed with services, luncheons, youth events, meet?ings, classes, fund-raisers, and community and social events. One of the new regular agenda items we have initiated this year is that each Board meeting will include a policy discus?sion. There are, of course, many policy dis?cussions that come up in all of our meetings. However, most of the time they are a result of a pending problem or up?coming event. What we nave added this year is an ongoing review of many temple policies that have never been fully ad?dressed, as well as some which have be?come outdated. These discussions certainly include a wide range of opinions from our Board members and will result in some ?el?evated volume levels? in the Boardroom, but the result is a coherent and unified team leading our Congregation. It is a great feeling for all of us. If you would like to suggest a topic for our Board Policy Review please let me know, or if you would like to attend one of our meetings, they are held on the sec?ond Tuesday of every month and are open to any member. We only ask that you con?tact tne office and let us know you are com?ing. The Boardroom is small but we can move to the library if many members want to attend. I am sure your opinion of our Board will be the same as mine. I?m writing this article just before the High Holidays and I?m imagining how wonderful our choir will sound twenty voices strong. Each choir rehearsal this summer sounded better than the last and I can?t wait for everyone to hear them. After five years of building a dedicated group of singers...what can I say...they?re fantastic! I know our Congregation will enjoy their beautiful music and appreciate how much they add to our Services. I?d like to take this opportunity to thank all of the members and list them by name. Frances Klamian, Bonni Casale, Glori Rosenberger, Fern Percheski, Rhonda Gly- man, Christy Molasky, Jill Smith, Nannette Spector, Suzanne Bertram, Lizbeth Knight, Barbara Rosenberg, Maxine Molinsky, Randi Friedman, Marty Fessler, Michael Mehr, Sheldon Rosenberg, Dick De Franco, Shirley Gellin, Peter Bugel, Larry Sasso and David Averbach. On behalf of myself and everyone in the choir, a great big thank you to our accompanist Rhonda Greeson and our new choir secretary, Fern Percheski. Without their help we couldn?t have done it! You will be hearing from our Adult Choir at many Services throughout the year and our Junior Choir debut this year at Simchat Torah and Consecration Services this month. There are a couple of fantastic Jewish music opportunities coming to our commu?nity this month that I must share with you. On Saturday night, October 5, at the Government Center, the Klezmatics will be in concert. Some of you may have seen a special on HBO with Yitzchak Perlman and the Klezmatics. The group plays a mixed style of Klezmer and Jazz music and they are wonderful! The second music opportunity: ?A Mobile Music Fair? will happen on October 13 in our parking lot during the Religious School?s ?Rummage Sale?. Tara West Publishers is a traveling Jewish Music Store and they will be here from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. They have anything and everything Jewish you ever wanted to own on cassette or CD. This will be the first time they have visited Las Vegas and I hope everyone will take a look...Chanukah is just around the corner and music is a wonderful gift! Shalom, ?Betta CNT HITS 500! As we enter this New Year, I am pleased to say that our congrega?tional family has grown to over 500 strong. I?m sure that the small group of individuals who started Ner Tamid in 1974 had hoped of one day having such a flourishing congregation. I like to think that we have grown due to the warmth of everyone at CNT staff to the hard working membership committee who greets you every Friday night, the Sisterhood who treats you on Friday nights, and every other committee, volunteer and member in between. Even though we are bigger, we can make it better by participating and making a place for both old and new members alike. I would like to extend a special thanks to my wonderful committee, whose support I can always count on and extend an invitation to everyone to join us and help make our membership even better. Because, although I can tell you about how beautiful our sanctuary is and all the terrific programs we have to offer, what really makes it all work is you, our membership, whose energy is the life of our congregation, and who truly make Congregation Ner Tamid a ?Special Place to Belong?. Jach fysen, Vice President Membership I ! We are working on many programs for the New Year. We will be starting our Bereavement Group at the end of October and our Sixth Annual Adult B?nai Mitzvah will begin in Novem?ber. Our Adult Education classes are going strong. A Yiddish class is in the works if there is enough interest. Let me know! The first Outreach social will be Sunday evening, October 13. Jewish Singles Network (JSN) is growing rapidly and planning lots of great programs in the future. We are very proud of our Havurahs, both continuing and newly formed. The Campership Program Committee (Scholarships for Summer Camps) will have its first meeting of the year after Religious School on October 13th. I?m also looking forward to working on the Regional SWFTY event which will be hosted by our own NTTY in December. The Marriage Workshop for newly married and engaged couples led by Dr. Sandra Ziskrout was very success?ful. The High Holiday Youth Service and program was a great experience for all the children involved. We hope that you enjoyed the Sukkot dinner and that it can be an annual event. As we continue to grow we realize that with new members come great new ideas--so please introduce your?self and let me know what we can do to continue to make our temple ?a special place to belong.? Last, and most importantly, I would like to give a very special thank you to Danny, Kelly, Joy and all of the teachers and Aides who helped to make the High Holiday youth service such a success.
