Chanukah Greetings From Rabbi Ruth Adar December is here, with all its holidays. For the past few years, I have heard a "war of words" about the winter holidays. Some Christians talk about"a war on Christmas" and object to generic greetings like "Happy Holidays." Jews get very prickly when anyone describes Chanukah as"the Jewish Christmas,"and insist that"it is only a MINOR holiday." Meanwhile the world goes a little crazy with decorations and shopping. I'd like to declare a moratorium on fussing, at least from the Jewish end. No, Chanukah is not "the Jewish Christmas." It's a holiday of its very own, a celebration of Jewish Peoplehood,a reminderthatwe can live with other nations without assimilating to invisibility. That said, I have to confess I like the lights and decorations; I like seeing families gather for festive mealsand children getting excited. In the ^teirkest part of the year, we need a little ^P|ht, and in a culture as all-encompassing as American secular culture, we need all the help we can get to counter the pressure to assimilation. If some of the decorations look suspiciously like Christmas decorations in a blue-and-white version, I don'tfindthat terribly disturbing. Jews have been picking up non-Jewish practices and celebrations and making them our own for centuries. Look at the Passover seder: it's a pagan banquet, complete with lounging and multiple cups of wine, reformatted as one of the most Jewish celebrations of all! Instead of gossip, it has learning; instead of drunkenness, it has a measured amount of wine, and instead of dancing girls for "dessert", it has the afikomen. (Yes, when the rabbis decreed that we would finish the meal with the afikomen, a broken piece of matzah, they were making sure we didn't finish Pesach with a drunken orgy.) So our challenge, then, is not to keep ^^hanukah"a minor holiday." Our challenge is to see to it that our celebration of Chanukah is shaped by Jewish values. Here are some questions to ask ourselves, as we celebrate our own American Jewish Chanukah: ? There is an ancient Jewish custom that no work is to be done by the light of the chanukiah. Do we exhaust ourselves with celebration, or have modest celebrations that refresh us and renew our souls? ? It is traditional to give gifts to children at Chanukah. Do we also teach them about giving tzedakah for the relief of those less fortunate than ourselves? ? It istraditional to putthe lighted chanukiah in a window so that passers-by will know that this is a Jewish home. As we do so, it is a good time to remind ourselves that we teach the world about Judaism by the way we treat others. ? The Chanukah dreydel is inscribed with letters that remind us Nes Gadol Hayah Sham: "A great miracle happened there." Do we keep our eyes open for the daily miracles all around us? ? Chanukah is a celebration about Jews living in Eretz Israel, free to worship in our own way. Today, after hundred of years of exile, Jews live in the Holy Land again. What have we done for Israel lately? Do we shop for Israeli products? Do we take opportunities to learn about Israel? ? Finally, Chanukah also remembers a terrible time in which Jews fought bitterly with other Jews (this is the part of the story we don't like to remember.) Are there any fellow Jews with whom we need to make peace? Do we have any habits of self-righteousness that need to be tempered a bit? Shalom bayit, the peace of the home, is a principle that can apply to our synagogue home as well. So enjoy the splashy decorations and the bright lights while we celebrate our Jewishness. I wish you a Chanukah of love and light, of peace and warmth: Chanukah sameach! DECEMBER SERVICE SCHEDULE Friday. Here are some of the highlights: We held our first annual Family Open House. Our students showed off their classrooms, art work, friends, and teachers to their parents, grandparents and siblings. The best part was it was held in the evening, so everyone got to play on the playground while the sun was setting. ? Noah Shabbat was loads of fun. The petting zoo was a big hit, as was Rabbi Akselrad's story about the animals on the ark learning to share. It was standing room only in the Beit T'fillah! ? We had our first Meet the Parents Night. Our parents showed up full force on a Saturday evening to get to know each other, drink wine, nosh, play games, and win door prizes. Great fun was had by all! ? Our preschool Thanksgiving Feast was wonderful. Each class made a special Thanksgiving dish to share with the rest of the school. Dressed as Pilgrims and Native Americans, the children shared their food with each other and experienced what they learned about in school about Thanksgiving. Now as we move into December, we are busy learning about (and of course getting very excited about) Chanukah! Our Pre-Kindergarten classes have been invited to sing Chanukah songs at CNT's 55+ Senior Social Group's Chanukah luncheon. They are also singing with CNT's Youth Choir at the ?ommunity Menorah Lighting at the District on December 12th. Come out 5nd see them! Also, Tot Shabbat on December 4th will be all about Chanukah.
