I wanted to list everyone who participated in the Adult and Teen Choirs, but I was told I didn't have the space to do that. So, I'm sorry that I can't acknowledge every choir member individually, but you were all great. Everyone worked very hard over the summer preparing and it truly paid off. I have heard wonderful reviews of their singing and truly appreciate all of their hard work. Someone even commented that this was the best choir they had ever heard for the High Holidays. Our accompanist Lillian Kollar and Adult Choir director Jack Guinn, both worked extremely hard and I want to acknowledge their talent and dedication. A special thank you to Maxine Molinsky and Glori Rosenberger for the beautiful singing at the Healing Service and to Brad Torchin for his superb accompaniment. I would also like to thank the Teen Choir for all their hard work and beautiful services. I would like to recognize teen choir director Lori Frankl, and accompanist Jack Guinn fortheirtalentand efforts in making the family service We are so lucky to have such talented musicians and singers to help out at the many services we offer. Wishing you all a happy and healthy new year! If you are interested in joining them in performing this mitzvot, please contact Irv in the temple office. so enjoyable. Philip NOTE - SHABBATONE DATE! Oy. Tough working out after being sedentary so very long. Wish the work out were easier, quicker. Over with. But how else can one stay in shape? No, I am not talking about physical conditioning here- but rather spiritual conditioning I After the "High? of the Holydays it is easy to let ourselves return to our normal patterns of worship. For many that means coming to Temple "once in a while" or for a special event. In fact we all know that there are many who simply come to Temple "only on the High Holydays" and that is enough. Yet, following my analogy a bit further, I would suggest that just as an occasional push up or sit up doesn't make one physically fit, neither does an occasional prayer make one spiritually fit. There was a reason that the rabbis of old deemed prayer to be a fixed Mitzvah. Something that was to take place daily-in fact three times a day. It was to insure that a person's thoughts and actions were never far from God. For while a person was involved in their hectic everyday life, they would look at their watch and realize very quickly that it was time to stop what they were doing and devote time to worship. Friday, November 19 h30 pm Shabbatone Family Service (Sanctuary) Oneg sponsored by Lori and Richard Schwartz Saturday, November 20 9:00 am Bible Study, Torah & Minyan Study (Beit Tefillah) And just as one may work out alone, the benefits of community are evident. Health clubs abound not only because they have fancy equipment and classes, but because there is a feeling of mutual support and collective energy that occurs when you are together with others working towards similar goals. Likewise, when we pray, we try to pray with a community, with a minyon of Jews who like ourselves are working towards a spiritual life. Friday, November 26 7:30 pm Shabbat Service (Sanctuary) Oneg sponsored by the Fox and Maslynsky families in honor of the baby naming of Olivia Pretner Saturday, November 27 9:00 am Bible Study, Torah & Minyan Study (Beit Tefillah) No one said that it would be easy. Even for one such as myself who has devoted his life to being a rabbi, it is easy to get distracted and to lose sight of the sacred in the every day. But prayer helps center me and reminds me that there is meaning to life and that the enhancement of life's meaning is being a partner with God. Our tradition teaches us that prayer is our way of talking to God. And study is God's way of talking to us. The September 27th issue of Newsweek magazine featured a cover story about the "New Science of Mind and Body". This issue devoted itself to sharing the scientific evidence that links our emotional, mental and spiritual self to our physical self. As we move into our new Jewish year, and move towards our "secular" new year, perhaps it is time for making a resolution that really matters. To enhance our spiritual lives through prayer, study, and community participation. Rabbi Sanford Akselrad N o v e m b e r 2 0 0 4 5 B?nai Mitzvah & Youth News Second Parents' Breakfast ? Mitzvah Menorah Project The Social Action Committee is again sponsoring the Mitzvah Menorah Project for needy Jewish children. At the Chanukah Bazaar on Sunday, November 7th, look for our booth with the huge Menorah hung with nametags of children. The tags will note if the request is from a boy or girl, the age, size, interests and one special gift the child really wants. The idea is for you to select a child and purchase Chanukah gifts forthat child. If you have your own children, this is an excellent way to teach the meaning of tzedakah or giving to those less fortunate than yourselves. Every year, several Chavurot either adopt a specific child or donate cash to help with shortfalls in the project. Once you choose a child, you will receive instructions on what to do next. You bring the wrapped gifts to the Temple by a specific date. Jewish Family Services then picks up the gifts and delivers them to the selected families before Chanukah. Inside each family bag is also a Menorah, candles, prayers, chocolate gelt and assorted Chanukah treats for the family. If you know of any Jewish families who could be helped by this project, please call Iris or Mitch at Jewish Family Services - 732-0304. All information will be held in strictest confidence by JFS. If you would like to help with the committee, please contact me either by e-mail at glofenster@yahoo.com or at 656- 5055. Shalom, Gloria Fenster Mitzvah Menorah Chairperson Social Action Committee N o v e m b e r 2 0 0 + 5 Your Executive Director Helping Those Who Need Assistance All members of all temples pay dues (or, Annual Commitments, as it's sometimes called). There are various structures in place (a per cent age of annual income per family, a "fair share" dues structure, or set, published financial dues, which is the way that CNT determines dues). Different temples have different structures, based on several factors (culture of the temple, history, etc). Of course, all temples have members who have various levels of income, and we are no different. We have been blessed with some congregants who are our "Menorah Level Donors", who annually contribute more than is published, and for these wonderful people, we sayTHANKYOU! Wealso have "Sustaining Members", who are our seniors who voluntarily contribute more than their "Senior Dues" structure that is in place. To you as well, we say THANK YOU. We also have a certain number of families who, due to various situations that are confidential, cannot afford to pay full dues, and of course, we accommodate everyone who wishes to be a member of CNT. (Those Menorah Level Donors and Sustaining Members help us to make this happen, and still have a balanced budget). This coming year, our temple will be instituting a new policy that the board of trustees has passed. For all families who have been requesting (and receiving) any form of financial relief, we will be mailing out a confidential form for them to fill out. Once this comes back to my office, it will be reviewed. It is our intention to treat each congregant, family, and situation with dignity, respect, and confidentiality. Therefore, any information, as in the past, will be treated confidentially so we can help those families who need assistance. We are a warm, caring and open Reform temple and want to make sure that we are doing our best to be fair to our congregants and the temple alike. Thank you for your understanding, and if you are currently receiving financial consideration, please fill out the form and return it to the office at your earliest convenience. As usual, if you would like to speak directly to me, I am always here for you. As an alternative, you may also request to speak with Debbie Levy, ourtemple Treasurer, who will work in conjunction with me, when requested, on any financial relief arrangements made. Thank you again, and of course, to be continued.... Larger views can be seen in the foyer. I 6 w w w .lv n e rtam id ?o rg President?s Message Once again our board of trustees is in the midst of putting together a budget for the 2005 fiscal year. As in years past, balancing the budget is no easy task. Like all not-for-profit agencies we always seem to have more needs than money to fund them. There are certain things that make it harder to balance our budget and there are some things that make it easier. So I would like to take you briefly through the process so you too can know what makes up our spending plan. First some facts the URJ provides us with financial information about all of the member congregations. These studies tell us for example that most congrega?tions our size receive between two thirds and three quarters of their total revenue from dues. For the last ten years we have always received just less than half of our revenue from dues. Although none of us like the increases they are needed just to keep up with inflation. Our congregation has a culture, where those that can make up the difference. For that we are very fortunate. Speaking of those that can give more the same study said most congregations get 10 to 12 percent of their revenue from fund-raising. We receive almost 25% of our revenue from fund-raising. Our annual Kol Nidre appeal makes up the bulk of that along with our Mensch of the Year dinner. The rest of the revenue comes from fees that we pay for specific events and programs a kind of pay as you go system. On the other side of the ledger we seem to be much more typical. Over 50 percent of our expenses are for salaries and benefits. We have a responsibility to pay our staff a livable wage. We have what I believe to be the best staff, our clergy, executive director, program director and education directors are second to none. They could not do what they do without a support staff that never quits or gives up. Most of the rest of our expenses are things we have little or no control over: utilities, insurance, supplies, and building maintenance and repair. This last item has been the most unpredictable. For several years we had a run of good luck and we spent less than we had budgeted but as our building ages we are now spending everything we budgeted and then some. Although we are moving in about two years we must maintain our building so it is attractive to potential buyers. Only about 10 % of the budget expenses are what I would characterize as discretionary. So next month when your bills for 2005 arrive, remember that the board of trustees takes its fiscal and fiduciary responsibilities very seriously. We continue to make membership available to anyone who wants to join with out regard to his or her ability to pay. We constantly look for ways to save on expenses so we can do some of the other worthy things that have been proposed. The board and I also want to thank all of those who can and do give so much financially so that we are able to balance our spending plan. I would also like to thank our treasurer Debbie Levy and her committee for the hard work and dedication for drafting a spending plan that is realistic and sensible.
