These months are an amazing time at CNT. It is the time that the small core of devoted worshippers continues to participate in temple life during the quiet, hot months, it is the time of year we begin new traditions in worship or experiment with different new particulars that we want to have become a part of our CNT culture. It is an honor for me to attend and to worship with all of our very devoted congregants. And, during these months, it gives me the opportunity to spend more time getting to know each congregant and their families. In essence, I LOVE this time of year, it is my most favorite time to attend. It helps me learn ond look forward to how we con continue to be A Special Place To Belong. If you want a special time to worship, try coming this month. You would be amazed at what a quiet, spiritual time worship can be at CNT in the summer months. ORG August is a Time of Transition Cookie Lee Olshein, Rabbinic Intern For so many of us (including me), the month of August makes me think of transitions, usually ting with returning to school. But in "Jewish time," August (at least this year) also brings with it the month of Elul, which begins this month at sundown on Monday, August 13th. Traditionally, we use the month of Elul as a "warm up" for the holiest time of the Jewish year, the "Ten Days of Awe." (Interestingly, Elul is the sixth month of the Jewish year, even though it falls right before the Jewish New Year of Rosh HaShanah, which paradoxically occurs at the beginning of the seventh month.) But what does it mean for Elul to be a "warm up"? Well, we wouldn't start a marathon without doing some stretching. Likewise, we can't really get the most out of the intent of our season of repentance without preparing our hearts. In the Sephardic tradition, Jews recite Selichot, prayers for forgiveness during the entire month of Elul. Even if you are not of Sephardic heritage, consider integrating this tradition into your lives and set aside some time each day in Elul to think about the past year - the things we did that we regret, how we can make them right, and how we can change our behavior in the future. Finally, in Aramaic, some say that the word Elul means "to search." As we approach the time for us to stand before God on the holiest days of the year, using this time to search our hearts for those things for which we need to seek forgiveness, as well as those things we need to forgive, can bring us closer to the true intent of the High Holy Days ... and to God. Preparing for The High Holy Days... Temple Members $20 Adults $15 Children 12 & under Non-Temple Members $25 Adults $15 Children 12 & Under A ugust 2007 3 A study in contrasts, the Hebrew month of Av contains both the solemn fast da^ Tisha b'Av (the Ninth of Av) and a holiday popular at the time of the Second Temple called Tub'Av{the 15th of Av). Tisha b'Av is the anniversary of the destruction of both the first and second Temples in Jerusalem, and by tradition, the anniversary of the expulsion Philip Goldstein, Cantorial Soloist Just a of Jews from Spain in 1492, the beginning of the deportation of Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto and of many other events disastrous to the Jews. By contrast, Tu bAv was an occasion of rejoicing and romance. The Talmud relates that on Tu bAv, young women dressed in white and went out to dance in the vineyards. By custom, they wore borrowed garments to minimize competitiveness over one another's couture. Young men would come out to the vineyards to survey the dancing women and to select their brides. While the music, dance and most of the details of that festival have been lost forever, a more conventional approach to music and socializing happens at CNT at approximately the same time as Tu bAv. Yes, I am talking about rehearsals for the High Holy Day Choir! While we can't promise matrimony will result, we can promise that the experience of singing on the High Holy Days will increase your connection to the liturgy and enhance High Holiday services for you and the entire congregation. High Holiday Choir rehearsals began in mid-July and everyone is working diligently to be prepared for the Holy days. Rehearsals are onTuesday evenings at 7 p.m. at theTemple. Irv Duchowny, Executive Director When I first arrived at CNT 5-1/2 years ago, Rabbi Akselrad sat down with me, and shared some *hts into some parts of temple life that are different from all other businesses, and especially, this of year for temples. I was told that, during the 2 months prior to High Holidays, we will add 75-80% of our new members of the year's total. Why do people join a temple just before the Holidays, opto be more direct, why do people join a temple at all? [*Note - since we've moved in to our new facility, we've added more than 50 new member families to date, so this year is very different from any other year!] I've come up with a few choice words of answer to those who come in, and ask just that question. These are not the only answers, but these are the ones I've come up with so far. Please help me add to the list: 1 - To be connected to a temple, to a Rabbi, to have access to Rabbis and Cantors during various life cycle events that are so important to us, making those days special and standout versus our"everyday lives". 2- To raise their children with Jewish traditions and customs, whether they had that upbringing or not (we have many Jews by choice who have chosen a Jewish life for themselves and for their children. 3- To support the local Jewish community, be it in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Southwestern region of the United States, or the U.S. in total. 4- To support a Jewish wav of life, and to offer those who choose, a place to worship and belong. 5- To directly or indirectly support the Jewish State of Israel, especially in times of need such as these times have been as of late. 6- To experience fulfillment, by belonging, by praying, and sometimes, simply just by being, with those around you who believe in the same Jewish values, customs and traditions. 7- To feel a sense of belonging, with an inner peace that comes from being part of a much bigger, older-than-time concept - going back to our ancestors, and all the generations before us, and after us. 8- To experience the feeling of knowing it's'The Right Thing to Do"-to help ourselves, our families, our neighbors, our community, our nation, and the State of Israel. ?- And lastly, to feel the fulfillment ofTikun Plum, the healing the world. We, as Jews, have taken the burden of ng this earth a better place to be, and have done so with vigor, and with a sense of purpose. For those of you who have other reasons of why you've joined, I invite you to share them with me, so that I can share those excellent reasons with others who ask "Why join a temple?" By the way, in answer to why so many people join a temple just before the High Holidays, it's the same reason that the Rabbis all ask their congregations on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year, for additional funding - because that's when the people are all at temple. People want a temple, their temple, to go to, to acknowledge their own life cycle, their own mortality, their families and friends, those who have come before us, and those who will be here after we've departed, and they want to do it with the Rabbis who they have known, and seen, all year long, for as many years as they've been coming. So, that leads me to the last reasons people join a temple - Consistency & Continuity - with so many things changing in the world today, people want something that they can hold onto, and belonging to a temple gives people that satisfaction, that fulfillness, that completeness, that they seek. This is especially true now that we've moved into our beautiful and wonderful new campus and temple, and we prepare for our first High Holidays in our new home. Come to ourtemple, and see just what makes CNT ?A Special Place To Belong". Thank you, and to be continued......... King David Memorial Garden On September 14 at 6:45 pm we will unveil the newly engraved Perpetual Rows in our Memorial Garden at a ief Shuva service. A ugust 200/ 5 Dir. of Early Childhood Education Lonnie Kritzler Although I have only been here a few weeks, I have been swamped getting ready for Congregation Ner Tamid's Early Childhood Education Center to open. The community has definitely taken an interest in us! Everyday there are phone calls and parents dropping in to find out more about the newest early childhood center on this side of town. I am happy to report that we have a nice number of children already signed up and ready to come to school beginning August 27. By the time you are reading this, the school building should be done and classrooms in the process of being set up. It has been amazing watching this school grow from a pile of dirt to a beautiful, user-friendly facility. If you would like a tour, just give one of us a call. We would love to show it off! And if you would like more information about our Early Childhood Education Center, call me or e-mail me. Personally, I would like to thank the congregants and staff of Congregation NerTamid for helping make me feel so welcome.
