The Cantor's Concert at CNT Sunday, November 9 Jon S. Sparer Honored as CNT?s Mensch of the Year for 2008 in a Unique Lounge Setting! On Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 6:30 pm, our architect, Jon Sparer, joins a distinguished list of those previously honored by CNT: Ed Nigro, Bernie Yuman, Michael Cherry, Jim Rogers and Yaffa and David Dahan. Jon Sparer, one of the two principals of the Las Vegas architecture firm YWS Architects, Ltd., has been the master planner and concept designer for such diverse international premier resorts as the MGM Macau in China and the recently opened expansion to the Borgata Hotel Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He has been a long-time active member of Congregation NerTamid contributing to the design of the Emerson Sanctuary, as well as our new sanctuary on the Greenspun Campus for Jewish Life, Learning and Spiritual Renewal. Why is this Mensch celebration different from previous celebrations? This year the party will be held in CNT's version of a Las Vegas Lounge complete with entertainment from the well-known band Harbor Lights. Time is Running Out! To Honor Jon by Purchasing an Ad.... Michael Cherry Dr. Bernard Farrow *Eugene Kirshbaum *David Goldwater *deceased I believe one of the most wonderful aspects of Judaism is its tradition of helping others and healing the world. Jewi^^ people have been in the forefront of protecting others 1^0 fortunate whether it was working to achieve civil rights for the oppressed, feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless or reaching out to those who need comfort. I am so proud that Congregation NerTamid shares these values and continues in the tradition of tikun olam, repairing the world. On one day last year, more than 300 of our congregation came together and accomplished amazing things. We donated more than one ton of food which was ultimately distributed to food banks in our community and to those suffering hunger. We helped sort and stock a local food bank. We donated more than 40 pints of blood to be used by those in critical need. We prepared lunches for more than 100 people without homes who would otherwise have gone hungry. We made decorated baskets of food to be given to homebound senior citizens for Sukkot. We made beautiful blankets for seniors and the homeless. We learned about the tragedies taking place in Darfur and made Darfur doll pins to raise money to help support Darfur projects. We reached out to those who need comfort by entertaining them with singers, treating families without homes to a bowling party and decorating a play room at the Family Promise day house. We also helped repair our little portion of the world by removing graffiti. We have another opportunity on Sunday, October 26,2008 for our congregation to come together to accomplish even more amazing things. We have many projects for all ages, interests and abilities that will give us an opportunity to practice the important Jewish principle of helping others and working together as a community. Please make sure you see the pull-out section on pages 11-14 in this month's bulletin, with all the details and registration information. We hope to see you on Mitzvah Day. Hospitalized? Please, let us know. Our clergy would like to visit and offer their support and encouragement. If someone you know is in the hospital, please call Karen Levine, Rabbi's Administrative Assistant, at 733-6292 ext 208. Privacy policies prevent hospital staff from automatically notifying the Temple. 2 WWW.LVNERTAMID.ORG If I were an alien from another planet and had to make an assessment of what life was like on planet earth, subsector From the Rabbi America, I would be scratching my antennae right now. Further Rabbi Sanford Akselrad re, if I gleaned this assessment from watching TV, I would be n more confused. One can only imagine what an alien would thinkof the shape of our bodies, and the range of intellect between dumb and dumber that exists in so called reality TV. Commercials would advise the aliens to be extra cautious because our teeth are yellow, we smell terribly, and our homes are a disaster. But I am not an alien. (Last time I checked). And so I wonder, if we spent as much time talking about character and virtue as we do about pleasure and vicarious pleasure, we might actually move society towards a meaningful conversation. A bit harsh. Well, perhaps, it is "that" time of year. You know, the High Holydays, when we are supposed to be a harsher on ourselves. We are to take life and our lives specifically most seriously. Trouble is, most of us don't. When we think of how to improve our lives, we don't think about how to improve our character or the nature of our relationships. Instead we think of what we can buy to make ourselves happy. Tell me if I am from another planet, but last time I checked, happiness is not about what we own, but who we are. So a suggestion. Next time you think about buying yourself a little something. Think about doing something - a simple act of kindness for someone else. Next time you worry about how you look, worry instead about how you act. Next time you wonder what it would be like to be on a reality TV show... start wondering how to shape the reality of the life you are living. ^^ow beam me up.... Scotty.
