Invite A Friend To Shabbat Services\ Once again on August 23rd, Congregation Ner Tamid is par?ticipating in a nationwide pro?gram to encourage affiliation to Synagogues known as "Invite a Friend." The idea is a simple one: If you know someone who has been thinking about joining a Synagogue or perhaps just wants to learn a little bit more ibout what our Temple has to offer, bring them to Temple this night for a very special evening. At 6:45 prospective members will meet in the li?brary and have an opportunity to listen to Rabbi Akselrad and members of our Temple board and committee chairs explain some of our ongoing and new Temple programs. Following this informal orientation, we ask Wo Conducted by Rabbi Sanfon August 2,1996 Shabbat Service 7:30 pm Baby Naming for granddaughter of Arlene & Allen Kagan Baby Naming for granddaughter of Judy Hopson Oneg sponsored by the Kagan and Hopson Families College Shabbat August 3,1996 Shabbat Service 10:00 am Bar Mitzvah of Cory Hughes Oneg sponsored by Jack & Wanda Erikson August 9,1996 Shabbat Service 7:30 pm Oneg sponsored by Sisterhood August 16,1996 Shabbat Services 7:30 pm Service conducted by Eileen Kollins Oneg sponsored by Sisterhood Soloist Bella Feldman August 17,1996 Shabbat Service 10:00 am Bar Mitzvah of Nathan Levin Oneg sponsored by Mark & Deanna Levin August 23,1996 Invite a Friend Sundae Shabbat 7:30 pm Baby Naming for daughter of Gary & Mara Lieberman Oneg sponsored by the Lieberman Family August 30,1996 Shabbat Service 7:30 pm Bar Mitzvah of Russell Letizia Oneg sponsored by the Letizia Family August 31,1996 Shabbat Service 10:00 am Bat Mitzvah of Shayna Unger Oneg sponsored by Mike & Roberta Unger you to join us as our guest at Shabbat Services at 7:30 p.m. The evening will conclude with an informal ice cream social and additional opportunities to "schmooz" with the Rabbi and leaders of our Synagogue. As I write this column in the midst of summer's heat, I am actually think?ing of the coolness of the fall and win?ter. For me, the summer has always been a time not only to relax but to plan for upcoming programs for the Temple. This fall I hope to add sev?eral new programs that have been widely asked for by our members. Eileen Kollins will teach a more indepth Judaism course and Hebrew reading skills class. This class will be offered Monday evenings. On Yom Kippur Afternoon at 2:30, Bella and I will conduct a new service in the Beit Tefillah as an alternative to our main Service in the Sanctuary. It will be a brief service of "healing and spiritual renewal." Across the country, Con?gregations are experimenting with new modalities of worship and the connec?tion of prayer to one's health. We hope that you will come participate in what should prove to be a very mov?ing service. In the Spring I am working on an all-day "Torathon" which will be a full day of learning complete with lectures, workshops, song and dance to be con?cluded with Havdalah. There are many other events and programs that we are working on as well. Two oth?ers that I would like to mention spe?cifically are in the area of counselling and relationship building. This fall, the Temple hopes to offer a Bereave?ment group that will meet on a regu?lar basis. Over the years many have felt the lack of a Jewish bereave?ment group in our city and we hope that this program will meet this need. In addition, the Temple is beginning to offer seminars and workshops for newly married or engaged couples. Both of these programs will be led by trained therapists and counsellors. If you are interested in learning more or signing up, please contact Melissa Roth, our new Program Director at the Temple. Over the course of the next few weeks, many new families will be join?ing our Temple. To those who are new, and to those who have support?ed the Temple over the years, please keep your ideas and suggestions com?ing. My first order of business as your new President is to thank several outstanding con?gregants for their service to the Congregation over the past few years. We will always be in?debted to Jerry Gordon for his vision and stick-to-it attitude in his effort to build our sanctuary. Jerry was THE catalyst who first proposed the sanctuary fund, he raised a substantial majority of the funds, and oversaw the de?sign and construction of our beautiful new Sanctuary, Ad?ministrative Wing, Beit Tefillah, and new classrooms. I have probably been the closest assis?tant Jerry had during these last three years working on the Sanctuary and 1 have been amazed throughout that period at the level of effort he consis?tently gave to the Congregation. As 1 begin to understand the dif?ficult challenges faced in the role of Temple President, 1 am even more in awe of Jerry?s dedication and ability to get done what he did while serv?ing as our President. He will be a tough act to follow. Our Congregation will forever be grateful for his service. Jerry has not slowed down either. He will be chairman of our Kol Nidre Campaign this year and has committed himself to con?tinue the Sanctuary Fund Cam?paign until our total goal is reached. In his spare time, Jer?ry serves as a Trustee for the Union of American Hebrew Con?gregations and will be a co- chairman for next year?s Regional Biennial convention. Our Congregation could not have better representation. Two other congregants have recently left our executive board who have also been examples of the hard work and dedica?tion that it takes to make Ner Tamid as successful as it is. Steve Joseph has served, in recent years, as Brotherhood President, Vice President of Ways fk Means, and Vice President of Social Activities. Steve is always there when the Temple needs him, is deeply committed to Ner Tamid and is one of its strongest advocates. Steve and his wife, Sue, are con?tinuing their service to us this year by coordinating our Havarah groups. Thank you Steve for your service on our Board and for your continued dedication to our Tem?ple. Philip Goldstein served as our Vice President of Education and put in countless hours organizing, hand holding and everything else that was needed at the time. Phil?ip was also a strong advocate for our religious school during the dif?ficult construction period and was an effective member of the Board. Thank you Philip and we look for?ward to your return to our Board in future years. Three trustees, Ron Worth, Lois Doctors, and Nadine Cracraft have recently completed their terms. These congregants have been generous with their time and mon?ey to the Congregation during the last few years and I thank you all on behalf of the Congregation. You have served well. Last, but not least, our retiring Sisterhood Pres?ident, Maxine Gratz. While serv?ing on the Board, Maxine has been a high energy advocate for Sister?hood and has shown a tremendous dedication to the Temple. 1 sus?pect the only goals that Maxine did not accomplish as President are the ones I stopped her from doing. I was the brick wall she kept running into, but Maxine has earned my respect. Maxine, you already know how the Sisterhood feels about you. I would like to thank you on behalf of the rest of the Congregation. (continued on page 18) ------------------------------------------- ??? Michael and I are enjoying the challenges and joys of parenthood. Avi is already three months old and growing so quickly, we can hardly believe it. I would like to thank the board and all of the staff for giving me the oppor?tunity to bring Avi to work with me. Everyone?s patience and understand?ing is greatly appreciated by my en?tire family! Avi will certainly benefit from growing up in the synagogue with such a wonderful extended fam?ily. Our dedicated choir members be?gan preparations for the High Holi?days in July. After a short break this summer we are sounding refreshed and are eager to celebrate Yontif in a completed Sanctuary this year. Imag- t ine how wonderful the sound will be with the room filled to capacity with carpet! Over the summer I will be teaching some of the most common High Holiday melodies during various Shabbat services as well as new Shabbat melodies. I hope you enjoy these learning sessions, it's never too early to start getting in tune for the new year. Shalom, Bella High Holiday/ are ju/( around Hie corner! Ter your convenience, the schedule of services is printed on the hock cover Sermon Series Following past Summer tradition, Rabbi Akselrad will offer a special Sermon series on vital topics of today on August 2, 9, and 23rd. At August 2nd Services we extend a special in?vitation to College Students who are visiting home for the summer as Rabbi Akselrad addresses the topic, "Why do we need Organized Reli- gion-Or Do We?". On August 9th, Rabbi Akselrad will speak on the sub?ject, "Church Burnings Across Amer?ica?are Hate Crimes on the Rise?" The series will end on August 23rd^ with the topic "Jewish beliefs in tm^ afterlife?is there Life After Life?" ROM THE ADMINISTRATOR?S DESK What a busy couple of months this has been. In early June, I attended a National Association of Temple Ad?ministrators seminar in LA. This sem?inar is the first of three parts required for my accreditation towards a Fel?lowship in Temple Administration. There were 17 Temple Administra?tors in attendance. The week was filled with a lot of instruction and in?formation. Topics not only covered the typical duties of an Administrator but also Jewish History; Customs, Prayers and Holidays. It was a great experience both professionally and personally. Our staff is going through some changes as you may know. Mary Zone decided to go to work with her husband, Michael. Mary will truly be missed in the office. Her presence has meant a lot to me with the stability needed during our transi?tion into the new office. She gives of herself totally and is very dedicated to the Temple. The new Bookkeeper is Fran Matthews. Fran has worked at Temple Judea in Taranza Califor?nia for over 15 years. Fran brings a lot of knowledge in Temple bookkeep?ing and operations with her. Please feel free to welcome Fran. Judy Klein, long time secretary for the Rab?bi and Bella, is leaving us. Her hus?band, Joel, is being transferred to Denver. Judy takes with her a lot of stability for the office and the Rabbi. Her tireless approach to her job has made the Temple successful in all of our endeavors. Judy will be missed terribly not only as a long term em?ployee but as a dear friend. The new secretary is Karen Levine. Karen is new to Las Vegas and comes to us from Rye, New York. Karen worked for New York Life for over 20 years. We are happy to welcome Karen to our office. $ (continued on page 18) Congregation Ner Tamid August 1996 Adult Education l Presenting the 1996 Confirmation Chiss From left to right: Jackie Fleekop, Jason Smylie, Kevin Wal?ton, Judith Denton-Pratt, Rabbi Akselrad, Ben Newman, Jordon Treat, and Matt Unger GGGGGGGGGGet Ready to Learm? The summer has been a time for planning, review and expan?sion. Our new Vice President of Education, Scott Stolberg, has been reviewing what has worked and what needs to be added. He will be offering input to the planning of our school year, I curriculum, programming, and fundraising. Our goal this year is pot only to continue what we have done successfully in the past but to instill a love of Jewish literature and a better understand?ing of the importance of living Jewishly, caring for others and respecting and supporting Jewish agencies, especially our own facility and family of Congregation Ner Tamid. Our beautiful facility is beginning to be used as it should be by offering many programs and activities. Watching us grow is truly amazing. We are not only growing in membership but in addressing the needs and concerns of our congregants. If you have a special interest, let us know. If you or your child has an interest or concern pertaining to religious school, let me know. This year is for the Joy of Learning in Jewish Education and at the M.B. A different educator will present the pro?gram each month, with subjects ranging from Maimonides to the Holocaust, social action to "Jewish Views of Death and Dying." The program is free, and refreshments will be served. Eileen Kollins will lead Saturday morning services on Octo?ber 26 followed by a women's issues program, and November 16 followed by a Jewish History discussion Meal and Spiel. I also serve as Chairman of the City of Henderson Planning Commission. Growing up in Las Vegas meant spending lots of time at Temple Beth Shalom and eating, sleeping and living Las Vegas AZA-BBG and BBYO. I learned about Judaism from BBYO and made my life?long friends there. As a result, 1 will al?ways be a strong advocate for our youth programming. For those of you still reading, my thanks. I look forward to serving the Tem?ple and hope to get to know all of you. Jerry Gordon passes the gavel to our new President, Bob Unger. Bob Unger, Board President At last year's Sanctuary Dedication, I wel?comed you to "our home." My prime di- ?ective is to enable every congregant to eel at home at our Temple. One way to get started is to get to know more about the people who have been entrusted to make policy and steer your Congregation. I have asked each of our Board members to prepare a short biographical article for our upcoming bulletins. Hopefully, our members will feel more comfortable after learning more about our Board members, will find new areas of common ground to enjoy together, and continue to build the "CNT Family." I could not ask our Board to expose themselves without offering up myself as the first guinea pig. So here goes! Aydie and I have been married almost 23 years. We spent all of those years in Las Vegas except for the three years I at?tended law school and a short stay in Huntington, NY on a special project. We have three sons. Joey is a senior at Green Valley High School and serves as Presi?dent of our Congregation's NTTY youth group. Matthew is a sophomore at Green Valley and is a Vice President of NTTY. Matthew is also a performer at GVHS, is in Madrigals, Fusion, and the Concert Choir. Our youngest, Danny, is in fourth grade at Bartlett Elementary and is Presi- ?dent of our house. For those of you who have lived in Las Vegas a long time, you fnay remember my parents, Joe & Shirley Unger and Aydie?s dad, Irv Goldstein. Board Member Profile (YES, IT'S A NEW SERIES) They were all well known and well loved here in town. (Las Vegas used to be a town!) My brother Mike and his family are also very active in Las Vegas. My niece, Julie, has held many positions in BBG (she is currently their regional presi?dent) and Mike?s wife, Roberta, has been dedicated to the BBYO program for many years. My niece, Shayna, has just be?come President of our TNT youth group and is working hard preparing for her Bat Mitzvah on August 31. Wait until Mike & Roberta?s youngest, Paul, gets older. We better all look out! My sister, Mindy, and her husband, Jim, have also volun?teered to help CNT often. Mindy and Jim produced the Temple history video for the Sanctuary Dedication and Mindy has gra?ciously (with a little arm twisting) volun?teered to be the bulletin editor starting with this edition. Many of you know Aydie?s mom, Jean Goldstein and almost everybody knows Aydie?s sister, Judy, who is Rabbi Akselrad?s secretary. Joel has just received a promotion at the IRS which is good for him, but unfortunately Judy & Joel will be moving to Denver this month and the Temple will be losing Judy! She will be missed in the office by all. When Aydie and I are not traveling (which we do a lot), I hang around Make- na Development Corporation. I am an at?torney by profession but I have not been in practice since 1991. Fourteen years of that was enough for me. Meetings, meetings, meet?ings! That's what it takes to get the year started. I had no idea what was in store for me. I am now settling in and have had some time to think about my first bul?letin article. I decided the first thing I should write about was me. Please don?t think that I am self-centered, but I thought that some of you who don't know me might want to know a little about me...so here goes! I won't tell you my age, but I moved to Las Vegas as a teen in 1963. I met my wonder?ful husband, Drew, while attending UNLV. We have two beautiful children, David and Denise and a fantastic daughter-in-law, Shelly. David & Shelly will make us grandparents for the first time this fall. Sisterhood is the original organiza?tion of women in the Congregation who band together in friendship for programs to benefit the Temple and the Communi?ty, for social activities, for study, and, above all, for the growth of the individual so that each may find an opportunity to fulfill her potential as a person and as a Jewish woman.
