Akselrad, Rabbi Eileen Kollins, President Schedule of Services RABBI'S MESSAGE Friday, February 2 NTTY Creative Service Oneg sponsored by NTTY Friday, February 9 Conducted by Rabbi Akselrad Oneg sponsored by 4th/5th Grade Class Saturday, February 10 Bar Mitzvah of Aaron Cohen neg sponsored by Paul and Sharon Cohen Friday, February 16 Conducted by Rabbi Akselrad Oneg sponsored by Sisterhood Saturday, February 17 Bar Mitzvah of Matthew Stone Oneg sponsored by Alan and Debbie Stone It is written in the Midrash: ?When the Messiah comes, first go out and plant a tree, then go to greet him.? This marvelous statement reminds us of the preciousness of our environment and the high esteem in which we hold the world that God has given us. Though we yearn and hope and pray for the coming of the Messiah, we are ultimately realists who recognize that for the world to survive, we must in fact actively participate in making the world around us cleaner, healthier and more beautiful. It is interesting that the midrash mentions planting a tree. Perhaps it is because trees take a long time to grow. When we plant a tree we are making a statement about our faith not just today, but tomorrow. Indeed, planting trees is one of the ultimate acts of altruism, for its fruits are to be enjoyed not by us, but by future generations. February 10th marks Tu B?shvat, Jewish Arbor Day. It is a time for planting and looking forward towards the future. Traditionally, we plant trees in Israel, which arc des?perately needed. These can easily be purchased from our Temple office. In addition, our Temple members, and our religious school students have also taken this time to plant trees and shrubbery around our Temple grounds. We arc delighted to announce the wonderful gift by Carol and Fred Siegel who will be landscaping the courtyard area of our religious school. We know that this wonderful gift will enhance our Temple and the environment in which our students learn. Our thanks go to the Siegel family and to our many, many members who now and throughout the years have continued to plant the seeds of Judaism and love of Torah in our Temple and community. To implement this plan, Scott Schreiber, a new trustee on our Temple Board, will serve as Social Action Chairman. Throughout the year we will do a variety of mitzvah projects as a congregation. The degree of success we achieve will depend on your participation. Our first Ner Tamid mitzvah will be to aid the National Council of Jewish Women in an ongoing project of theirs. We ask that during the month of February you bring to the Temple any of the following; soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes (all of our dentists please take note!) and any other health products you would like. It would be great if you could bring in all the small bottles of shampoo, conditioner and lotion given out at hotels where you have stayed. Also if you have any towels that are no longer the right color or beginning to show signs of wear but have lots of ?drying? left in them, they would be appreciated too. These items will be distributed to Childhavcn, St. Vincent?s and the Shelter for Abused Women and Children. At Purim it is a Jewish tradition to bring gifts to the poor. Help us fulfill this tradition and have Ner Tamid known throughout Las Vegas as the congregation that cares. Future projects suggested have been to have members replace non-Jewish volun?teers at hospitals or other facilities on Easter and Christmas, to collect canned goods at Thanksgiving and a blood drive. If you have any suggestions and/or would like to work with Scott, please call the Temple and leave your name and number. Thank you for your cooperation. A special thank you also to Carol and Fred Siegel for their generous donation to beautify our courtyard. Mazel tov to our Temple families who celebrate the Simchas of B?nai Mitzvah ceremonies and weddings during February. Eileen Kollins OUTREACH Chanukka Party The Outreach program held their first event in Decem?ber. Close to 40 people came to the Chanukka Party and learned the meanings behind the tradi?tions. Special thanks go out to Eileen Kollins and Bella Schwartz for making it a memo?rable event. Rap Session For February Outreach will host a special ?Rap Session?. February 25th at 7:30 pm in the Temple Library. Dr. Lewis Etcoff and Ira Goldberg, two dis?tinguished psychologists, will lead the discussion. Topics will include such things as interfaith relationships, marriage, and rais?ing children in an interfaith envi?ronment. Anyone who is interested can call the temple office at 733-6292. ]EWISH LECTURE SERIES PRAYER Have you no ticed that many of our congregants have been without prayer books at our well at?tended services? Page 4 Congregation Ner Tamid Page 5 Congregation Ner Tamid RELIGIOUS SCHOOL YOUTH ACTIVITIES Dear Parents: I am looking forward to my time as interim principal of Congregation Ner Tamid?s religious school program. I believe we have a very outstanding faculty who excel as educators and demonstrate their knowledge of Judaism. I am confident that Ner Tamid will continue to be recognized for its excep?tional educational environment. We need the support of every parent in order to have the best programs for our youngsters. We need constructive criticism and assistance in developing quality programs about Judaism. I encourage you to call on me at any time either by phone on Thursdays after 3 p.m. or in person on Sunday morning. I also urge that you send your children for their Jewish education on a regular basis, so the teachers can realistically plan for that day. We are looking forward to the holiday of Tu B?Shevat and we will be planting a tree on Sunday, February 11th to honor this Jewish holiday. Sincerely, Jackie McRitchie NTTY HEWS NTTY has started the new year with a bang. We would like to thank those members of the congregation who pledged contributions for Camp Swift (Mitzvah Corps), a camp for underpriviledged children. Because of your generous commitment, programming and activities planned beginning with a creative service on February 2nd. The environment and its mounting decline is a topic which concerns both teenagers and adults. Our service will reflect the thoughts and concerns on the ever-increasing problem of the environment and pollution. We invite each and every one of you to join us for this very special creative service. Throughout the month of February, NTTY and Ner Tamid are co-spon?soring a can and paper drive. Old aluminum cans and newspapers can be dropped off anytime in the cans provided in the Temple parking lot. The money raised will be donated to an environmental protection organization. Please join us in this small step toward saving our plants, animals and oceans. Also as a part of social action month, NTTY will be adopting grand?parents in an innovative program designed with Jewish Family Services. The agency has given us names and we have collaborated with them on ways to help. This is a first for both NTTY and the JFSA. FromFebruary 16to 18, members of NTTY will be attending a regional Kallah in El Paso, Texas. Planned by the regional president, this study weekend will bring to our youth a rather intense look into the issue of public bigotry and anti-semitism. From a life-style version of the Game of Life to a personal and educa?tional look at abortion. NTTY is a fun, aware and supportive group for teenagers grades 9 through 12. If you are interested in NTTY, please call Shira Lewis at 451-0866 or Jennifer Gross at 456-9399. DON?T FORGET... bring in your CANS and NEWSPAPERS. Help support NTTY and our world. With this new decade upon u^^ and the growing numbers of families joining our congregation, it is very important that we keep our children involved with social activities as well as serious activities. We have our NTTY group for students in 9th grade through 12th grade. We also have a TNT group ranging from 6th grade through 8th grade. However, there isn?t a group for our 2nd through 5th graders. We are looking for an advi?sor who loves to be around children ages 7-10. The advisor(s) would be responsible for just a few meetings a year; every other month is ideal. Ac?tivities could be taking the young?sters to interesting places (roller skat?ing, movie or Rainbow Company play, etc.) with parental help, of course. Also Jewish or holiday-re?lated crafts makes a good project for^k this group. If you are interested or need more information, please call Maxine Gratz, Youth Activities Coordinator, at 438-7512.
