Yet, that fact in itself makes Purim?s theme of religious freedom even more enduring. Let?s set the scene.... A long, long time ago, in far off Persia, King Ahashverous decided to have a party and requested that his wife at the time, Vashti, come and entertain his guests. Vashti stated that she would not be the entertainment and is either banished or beheaded according to different sources. King Ahashverous then held a beauty contest that lasted the duration of a year in order to find a new queen. Esther is encouraged by Mordechai to enter, wins, and is crowned queen. In the meantime, King Ahasverous? advisor, Haman, issues a royal edict that all Jews must die because Mordechai, a Jew, refused to bow down to Haman. To make a long story short, Esther reveals to the king that she is Jewish, King Ahashverous proclaims that the Jews are allowed to defend themselves, and Haman is hanged on the gallows that he built to kill the Jews. The question that should be asked then is, "If tha^k story of the Book of Esther did not actually occur, is^^ there still validity to the celebration of the holiday of Purim?? The answer is a resounding, ?YES!? Even more so, we should celebrate our religious freedom that is championed by this tale. For if there was not some more and ethical value to the story then it would have lost its credence many years ago. Yet we, as rabbis, hold high this story of the triumph of our people as a model of fighting for our religious beliefs. The question to be asked then is how to relate this ancient tale to our world today. Like many stories of our tradition, the idea is not if it truly happened but what the truth behind the story is. The theme of Purim and the Book of Esther is even when the world seems turned upside down, that is, when sticking to one?s beliefs is the most important. Esther, on the urging of Mordechai, went out on a limb for her beliefs. So too should we. When our religious beliefs and tenets are being threatened, it is imperative of us to stand up for what we believe is right and for the rights of others. Hag Purim Samach! We hear more and more about how inter-faith marriage and secularism may bring about the end of the Jewish people. The future of our congregation, and in fact the future of the Jewish people, rests in our youth. That is not to say that those of us who are middle aged do not have plenty we can still do to insure the future of Judaism. Certainly, we need those experienced members of our faith who provide a link and teach us about events from the past we have never experi?enced. However, fifty years from now when most of us are gone, it will be our children and grandchildren who will be leading congrega?tions into the later half of this century. At CNT, we have programs for all of our children from preschool to high school. Some of these programs are educational; some are just for fun like Ner Tamid Temple Youth (NTTY) or Teens of Ner Tamid (TNT). There are classes especially for teens that have completed their B?nai Mitzvah and also Confirmation class. CNT and the Sisterhood even offer some limited scholarships for the best youth program of all - Jewish Summer Camp. The URJ spon?sors several camps and there are several other great Jewish camps besides. Why am I telling you about all of these programs? Your board of directors and staff spend a great deal of time on these programs. I want to encourage you to get your children or grandchildren in?volved, if they are not already. If they are involved in one thing but not another, encourage them to do more. As the parent of a teen?ager I can tell you, this is the kind of activity we need to encourage. At a time when all we hear about are the teens and even younger children who get into trouble, we need to guide our future, our children, into healthy productive activities. Look around the next time your teenager goes to a movie or bowling with their friends, look at all the unsupervised teens. I recently picked Megan and a friend up from the movies and was shocked by all the unsupervised teens ?hanging out?, literally and figuratively. Being involved in your child?s activities pays off. Kids are like anything else - you get out what you put in. If you are interested in educational programs contact Jackie Fleekop in the temple office; if your child is in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade, contact Jolie Alhadeff the NTTY advisor; if your children are in high school, contact one of our new youth advisors Scott Yahraus or Yvonne Weiss. Not sure just what to get them involved in? Contact the temple office and they will get you information on all the pro?grams and help you decide where your child fits best. Most of today?s leaders in our congregation and other Jewish organizations trace their desire to lead and be part of Jewish groups to good memories of Jewish activities in their youth. There in lies the secret to sustaining our people for another 5000 years. B?Shalom Scott StolbergExecutive Director's Message Everyone?s An Owner! I want to share the excitement and latest news with you as we move forward on our new campus. We have listed our current facility and, as this is written, several interested groups have come forward expressing their interest. The various sub-committees of the NCC (New Campus Committee) have started to have their meetings, beginning with the Fund-raising committee, followed by the Social/Events committee, the PR/ Information committee, and the Design committee (which also encompasses the Building committee). Coffees have been held, and more are scheduled in the future. The next is March 14th bagels and coffee here at the temple at 9:30 am. While all of this has been going on, we have been working diligently to research and calculate the correct amount of the Building Fund Assessment that we need to move our project forward. As a reminder, the board voted in October 2003 to increase the amount of the Building Fund Assessment to $2,500 for couples and $1,250 for seniors and singles. All previously paid donations to the Building Fund, dating back to 1994, were credited towards this amount. A mailing went out during the first 2 weeks of February to each congregant who still has an outstanding balance on their Building Fund Account, which is payable over 5 years. In addition, I want to share with you that if you make (or have made) a New Campus Campaign pledge in excess of your assessment, your assessment will be deemed satisfied. Interestingly, in doing our research, we have discovered that quite a few families have paid little, or none, of their Building Fund Assessment to date. I want to gently remind all of our Congregants that the Building Fund is part of everyone?s annual commitment, and we have a policy that, unless details have been worked out with me prior, 75% of annual donations must be paid in order to receive High Holiday tickets and for school enrollment. We at CNT have a mission, a goal, and a vision that we have discussed and shared, starting with our published 5-Year Plan back in 2001 - a new campus for learning, enrichment, education and Jewish life; eight and one-half acres of a ?coming together? for our community; and an opportunity for everyone to be a part-owner, religiously, spiritually, socially, Jewishly. We ask that everyone give to be a part of it, to be tied into the building, to the ideas, and to the concept of what we?re doing, not only for our children, and ourselves but also for the Jewish community at large. By contributing, you have the opportunity to ?own? as much of the building and campus as I will, as Rabbi will, as anyone else will. Everyone has the opportunity to do a huge Mitzvah - to build a temple that will stand for ourselves, our children and all the Jews who choose to join us in our new home. A S p e c ia l P la c e T o B e lo n g Religious School News March Madness and Commitments March Madness is an interesting way to describe the college basketball season. March itself is full of little madness. Just as I was about to deal with the madness of writing my monthly bulletin article, I spoke to a congregant from Kingman. My idea was that she should share what she said to me with everyone. The following are some of her thoughts. Shalom Jackie I am a second year member of CNT with a commitment and I travel two hours each way to come here. And Ner Tamid has helped me to keep it. I live in Kingman Arizona and have traveled for many years to obtain the fellowship that is very difficult for rural Jews. I traveled an hour each way to Temple in Lake Havasu City and eventually helped form a tiny Reform congregation in Kingman. The local congregation did not meet the religious education needs of our youngest daughter. We heard of CNT?s friendly atmosphere and most important, it?s religious education program. With the help of Jackie Fleekop, lrv Duchowny and Rabbi Weiner our family made the decision that this was going to be our spiritual home. We have grown together as a family and our daughter Sherese is doing well in religious school. Sherese takes pride in her Jewishness. When I see the glow on her face after she recites a new prayer for me, and when I hear her read the liturgy besides me at services I know this commitment is a mitzvah. We all enjoyed looking for the Ground Hog?s shadow (which he really did see and so did the children). Of course, we all learned about Presidents Lincoln and Washington. We even baked our own Challah to enhance our Sabbath experience. This month of March will also be an active one here at our school. On Wednesday March 7th, our students will enjoy celebrating the joyous holiday of Purim. All of the youngsters will dress up in costumes and we will get to make our own delicious treats of Hamentashen and even get to make our own masks and give Mislot Manot to our friends. Next month, April, we will have our annual school Seder. On April 2nd we will have all of our children ready for this fun experience. It is always a wonderful moment to hear our little ones chant the traditional four questions and participate in all of the traditional holiday rituals. It will be another great day here at CNT. We are continuing our preparations for next year?s Preschool programs. We are already in the enrollment phase. If you are considering a preschool for your child or grandchild, don?t be left out because you waited too long. Lois Bergman Early Childhood Director Rabbi Akselrad's Overnight Bus Trip to Los Angeles On Saturday, May 15th, be prepared to join your fellow Congregants on an exciting overnight bus trip to Los Angeles led by Rabbi Akselrad. Leaving bright and early Saturday morning, we will make our way in a fully equipped handicapped accessible luxury bus. Saturday afternoon, we will visit the spectacular Getty Museum. In the evening, we will attend a dinner and a show at the Lunaria Restaurant in West Los Angeles. Noted for its fine cuisine and excellent mystery theater, the Lunaria should provide us with a delightful evening of fun and entertainment. Sunday morning, we will have a private escorted tour of the world-renown Skirball Museum. Following this private tour, there A will be plenty of time to enjoy the museum at your leisure. Today?s Women Embracing a Shared Vision It?s almost Spring and so much happens in the Spring time. It?s actually my favorite time of year. So much color?the desert comes alive, people seem to walk with a bounce in their step. The anticipation of summer, graduations, proms, weddings, and simchas galore bring a renewed excitement. And for me, well, I?ll be passing the baton to Sheryl Chenin- Webb in just a few short months... I hope you have all had an opportunity to meet Sheryl. She is an incredibly gifted and creative woman who will be the next Sisterhood President. Make sure you give her your thoughts about what you?d like to see in Sisterhood next year. Men's Club News Men's Club 5th Annual Golf Tournament This year's tournament will be Sunday, April 4th at the Las Vegas National Golf Course on Desert Inn near Eastern. This is one of the city's oldest and finest courses, centrally located for everyone. Our tournament remains one of the bargains in charitable golf with fees of $100 if paid before March 15 and $115 after. You may put together your own foursome or sign up and ask us to pair you up. Golfers of all skill levels always have fun at this outing. The fun begins at 6:45 a.m. We play a scrabble best ball format. This gives every team a chance. Women are always welcome to play. One of the highlights of our day is a raffle which includes show tickets, golf items and a wide variety of other great prizes. This is a terrific way to spend a morning with friends or to invite business associates for some special bonding. If you would like to sponsor a hole, contact Drew Levy at 932-2222. For only $150 you will have your name on a sign at the hole plus recognition at brunch plus an ad on our web site. Chairman for the event is Geoffrey Schafler.
