May 20th will usher in the holiday with a private consecration ceremony of our Confirmands. Parents and relatives of this year?s class will witness a moving celebra?tion of Jewish values as our Confirmands are blessed on the eve of Yheir Confirmation. Confirmation On Friday, May 21st, at 7:30pm, the entire Congregation is invited to share in the Simcha of the Confirma?tion of the largest class of students in the history of Congregation Ner Tamid. The students have worked diligently to provide the Congrega?tion with a meaningful and creative service. This year?s program will be entitled ?The Princi?ples of Reform Judaism.? Much in the news over the past few months has been the discussion of a new platform of principles for Reform Judaism. Over this time, the platform has been revised again and again. Come learn about this debate and how Reform Judaism has changed over the decades reflecting contemporary themes as well as ancient concerns. Rabbi Akselrad and rabbinic intern, Leah Malmon will lead worships and discussions which will give you the opportunity to learn more about the history and specifics of Reform Jewish belief. On May 23rd, the Central Conference of Reform Rabbis will hold their annual convention in Pittsburgh to discuss a final draft of principles. Therefore, this workshop is not only timely, but of immediate importance as we partici?pate in what has become a national discussion of values and commitment within the reform movement. Babysitting is available for Friday evening?s service and Saturday morn?ing?s service and program but RSV'P?s are a must. If you are in need of babysitting, please RSVP no later than May 18 to the Temple office, 733-6292. We hope that you will make special plans to celebrate Shavuot this year in what should prove to be a wonderful weekend of prayer and celebration. But that was good enough. And I remember the many other milestones-the triumphs and defeats-and everything in between that has brought CJ to this day. Like a proud Dad-like I am certain every other Dad, I sit back in awe and wonder...where has all the time gone? It was only yesterday that she was a little girl. And now... Many people have asked me, ?So Rabbi. Who is going to do CJ?s Bat Mitzvah?? I guess we had never thought of the question. One of the privileges of being a Rabbi is officiat?ing at special moments in the lives of your own family. Unlike a Doctor who is advised not to ?operate? on close family members. A rabbi receives extra joy in being a part of a simeha and a certain solace in being a source of strength in times of sorrow. And of course as the proud Dad, well, I look (continued on page 16) I remember the wording of the invitation quite well, though it was nearly three decades ago. My Dad, sitting at a typewriter created a special invitation to my Bar Mitzvah in which he began with the words, ?It?s happening to us. Our son Sandy is having a Bar Mitzvah!? As the only son of the only Rabbi at the Congregation, and the first time any Rabbi of the Congregation had celebrated a bar mitzvah, it was, I assume, quite an event. Don?t ask me, though, I was only the Bar Mitzvah! Most of what happened is a blur, but I do remember people chuckling during my speech, ?What it?s like to be the son of the Rabbi.? And too, I remember the pride of my parents and relatives who gathered to celebrate the simeha. And so now, I repeat, ?It's happening to us! Our daughter CJ is having a Oat Mitzvah!" I can remember the day she was born. I can re member her first steps. Adult B?not Mitzvah Class of 1999? As I write this article, I am listening to a long-awaited premier CD of the music Tor very special work in progress. Over a year ago, I was approached by Michael Isaacson, one of our previous guest composer's, to join in a co?commissioning of a Children's service for the year 2000. From the moment I heard of the project I was interested in it. The Service entitled, L'maaseih V'reisheet - To Recreate the World, will be performed by over 40 synagogues throughout the Coun?try on January 21, 2000. The date marks Shabbat Shirah - The Sabbath of Song. Michael Isaacson and Cantor Jay Frailich of the University Synagogue in Los Angeles came up with the idea to put together a service written especially for the new century for children's chorus. With the help of several people; including our Sisterhood and Brotherhood, our Congregation will be participating in this exciting event. I know it's a little early to mark your calendars, but this event will surely make Jewish music history*. B'shalom, !'Bella Congregation Ner Tamid proudly ANNOUNCES THE ADULT B?NOT MlTZ- vah class of 1999. Amy Abrams, Arlene Farrow, Bonnie Green and Gloria Golberg began theirstudies LAST YEAR WITH ?BEGINNING HE?BREW.? Throughout the year they LEARNED THE COMPONENTS OF JEWISH Shabbat services and other cele?brations. Under the expert TUTORING OF A VERY SPECIAL TEACHER, Melissa Roth, within weeks, much TO THEIR OWN AMAZEMENT, THESE STUDENTS WERE READING HEBREW! On June 5?, Rabbi Sanford Akselrad presents these four wom?en TO THE CONGREGATION, AND CALLS them to Torah as they become B?not Mitzvot. After much DILIGENT STUDY THEY WILL CHANT FROM the Torah, which is comprised of the Five Books of Moses. Withti^^ HELP AND ENCOURAGEMENT OF CAI^^ torial Soloist, Bella Feldman, THESE STUDENTS HAVE LEARNED TO CHANT FROM THE TORAH AND SING THE BEAUTIFUL SONGS, PRAYERS AND BLESS?INGS. The ceremony of Adult Bat Mitzvah is very special because as ADULTS THESE STUDENTS HAVE CHOSEN TO STUDY FOR AND PARTICIPATE IN THE PROCESS LEADING TO THE CULMINATING CEREMONY. THIS IS THE NINTH ADULT Bar/Bat Mitzvah class at Congre?gation Ner Tamid. This ceremony AND CELEBRATION REMINDS US THAT Judaism is a life-long process, and that Jews of any age may elect to LEARN AND PARTICIPATE FULLY IN Temple. The B?not Mitzvah Service will TAKE PLACE ON JUNE 5? AT 1 0 AM AT Congregation Ner Tamid. Rabbi shared stories from both books, as well as some small miracles from his own life. Some of the women in attendance also shared some miracles from their life. After the book review we had a great Mexican lunch catered by ToTo's Mexican Restaurant. With more than 30 women in attendance it was another great program. Thanks again to Judy Applebaum and Debbie Hallerman for all their hard work. I don't know what words I can use to say how wonderful the Women's Seder was. Leah &? Bella lead us in service, along with Maxine Molin- sky, and Glori Rosenberger on guitar. As always the children add that special meaning to the service and I enjoyed listening to the four auestions in Hebrew. Once again the staff of The Party Shop, headed by Frances Klamian out cooked themselves for a wonderful meal. The Women's Seder has really grown over the years, and this year we had over 125 Women in attendance. For those of you who couldn't attend this year, I hope to see you next year. Mark your calendars for Wednes?day, May 19, 1999, 7:00pm. It?s election time. Who doesn't like Jewelry & Dessert ? We will have a special Faux Jewelry Truck Show (10% of sales to be donated back to sisterhood) and Dessert. So, come out to Vote, Shop, and have Dessert. Shalom, Sandy Chai Golden Chai celebrated its eigh?teenth Anniversary with a birthday party meeting featuring Ann McCormack. We have started playing bingo following our meet?ings, and our table of Pan is back. Our Sabbath Service went very well and we will remember it always. The picnic date has been changed to Sunday, May 1G at 2:00 pm. The reason is that we could not get the park we wanted on the earlier date. We (that is, Jere Davis) have now arranged for CNT to get a great area at Floyd Lamb State Park on the 16th. If you're a member of a havurah, you should have received a flier a week or so ago with all the details. If you haven't, contact Stewart Blu- menfeld, our havurah chairman, for all the information (numbers be?low). Why not make the All-Ha- vurah picnic your havurah's May activity!! Speaking of havurah members, last month Stew put a list of known havurah members in the Bulletin with a request that anyone who is in a havurah, but not on the list, give him a call so that we can update the list. Four weeks later: no calls. Does that mean that the list is complete? For your conve?nience, here's the list again. Please, please-if you are a mem?ber of a havurah and your name is not here, contact Stew at 254- 9222 or at StewHQS@aol.com.
