September 1st will mark the first day of the Hebrew month of Elul which leads up to the new year and therefore provides an ^fcpecially easy way for us to mark our time as we approach the molydays. There is a wonderful book by Kerry Olinsky, Rachel T. Sabath, and David J. Wolpe entitled, Preparing Your Heart for the High Holy Days: A Guided Journal. The authors guide you through a process of introspection and"heshbon ha-nefesh,"encouraging readers to take a moral inventory of their lives. Throughout the book are suggestions on how to overcome obstacles to faith and reflections to inspire personal journaling. For those of you who are up to the challenge I encourage you to begin your journal and carry it through Yom Kippur, writing and reflecting about your life, your family, and your personal goals as a way of preparing for the holy days. Here are some topics that I thought might inspire: How have I shown others appreciation today? Have I learned something new today? This month? Year? What brings me sadness and why? What brings me joy, and why? What am I passionate about? why? What have I lost my passion for? And why? Do I take my religion seriously? How so? Why, why not? Do I watch life go by or do I try and take charge of my life? What does it mean to be a "good" Jew? ^:here any difference between being a "good" Jew and a "good person?" Have you told your loved ones that you loved them recently? Have you shown them love? How so? Find someone that you have wronged during the past year and seek their forgiveness. Write about the experience and how the process made you feel. How would you like to improve your life? And what is stopping you? Where would you like to travel some day? Why? What could make it happen? What have you left unfinished? If I could turn back the clock I would.... If I could take a peak into the future 5 years I hope I will be... 10 years? 30 years? Little things to do: Help a stranger. Donate time to a charity of your choice Become involved in the political process Attend Shabbat morning minyon Make Shabbat a special time for your family. Show you care about the environment by making concrete changes in your lifestyle Show you care about your health by making concrete changes in your life. The list above gets you started. You can create your list to finish the days or reflect upon the meditations in the book. But whatever you decide, please do not decide to let this time path without doing "something". Often I am ?<ed are the holidays early his year or late? With reflection I hope you will find that they are as they should be, right on time. L'shana Tova, A good and healthy New Year to you and your family. September 2008 3 Love and the Stranger Thursdays, September 18, 25 ~ 7pm The Torah is very specific: We are commanded in Deut. 10:19 to"love the stranger, because you were strangers in the land of Egypt". Sponsored by the Social Action Committee. September 2008 5 Just a $ Philip Goldstein Cantorial Soloist Wow, hard to believe that September is here. That means two things. High Holidays and the Shabbatones return. Besides the hustle and bustle of a busy summer, getting the kids ready for school (and yourself), plus getting all those projects done around the house, our thoughts begin to turn to the High Holidays. This month I thought I would talk a little about the music for our High Holiday Services, its roots and what goes into preparing for these Holy Days. You hear the finished product at Services, but here is some background about the music. Nusach is a term for a particular musical mode or melody. Each and every service in Judaism has its own particular musical theme or nusach i.e.: Weekday Services, Shabbat Evening, Shabbat Morning, festival and High Holidays. This means that most every prayer chanted during each of these services has a different melody depending on the holiday. However, the only time you would probably hear an entire service chanted with nusach would be at an Orthodox or Conservative Synagogue. Even so, I believe a Cantorfrom any movement should know the nusach for each and every prayer and holiday to truly understand the roots of our musical heritage. I have tried to bring a variety of different styles of music to our Congregation. You will hear some nusach, some of the melodies the Rabbi or I grew up with, and also some of the more contemporary compositions at most of our services. This year you will hear a traditional High Holiday melody for the Chatzi Kaddish. You will probably recognize this melody as several other prayers are chanted very similarly due to the nusach of the High Holidays. Our Adult Choir has been working since July to prepare for the High Holiday Services and I hope you will take the timeto let them know that they are appreciated. My thanks go out to all of the Adult Choir members, choir conductor John Smith and accompanist Lillian Kollar for their hard work and dedication, i also welcome any feedback on the musical choices I have made and hope that you enjoy and are moved by this music. The Shabbatones return September 12th. The band members: Ira Spector, Glori Rosenberger, Alan Molasky, Jay Poster, Brad Torchin, Mike Adler, Eddie Birch and Tracie Burch will all return, plus our newest member Bruce Gellar and Mike Adlers'stand-in drummer, Paul Kessin. The power of music can teach, renew, revitalize and move us all. As we approach the New Year and Yom Kippur, we need help in attaining change in ourselves. I hope that we can help facilitate personal growth and continue to attract so many people to our vision in the months to come. Please tell your friends and family to come and worship with us. I wish everyone a happy and healthy new year!
