Mrs Sadie g George Los A n geles,C alif, St.Thomas,Nevada June 2lfth,I929 Dear Madam Yesterday was red le tte r day for gt.Thomas, due to the v is it here o f Secretary of the Interior Wilber, Dr,Mead and lesser lig h ts of Boulder Canyon Project. Should I not fe e l fla tte re d to have them come a l l the w^y here from Washington, just to shake my hand ( ? ) , Of course there may have been some other reason for their comming. They with the Nevada Congressional delegation, and about 50 other s a tta lite s from y°ur state and elsewhere went down i# r the sa lt mine, and a ll crowded into i t in the dark,, mine excepting i. small lig h t or to that was used by Sucker in p iolatin g Wilber and one or two others through the mine workings. My time was taken up in keeping the dark bunch from hurting themselves. I came with the crowd without getting just what passed betwea Wilber and lucker, but from the l i t t l e Rucker had time to t e l l me,for6r because of listn in g others ,and just as we were leaving, I judge he gave the secretary an ear f u l l , and he the secretary said to me i t was a surprisingly wonderful mine. Just two days before, the miners in driving ahead to the west in the overhead stope/broak through into an empty fissu re about two feet feet wid#,yOu cftld look up i t for 50 ° r more feet and down for about a lik e distance anlhea'r’ rocks r o ll on down s t i l l deeper, and oould also look along i t to the north and to the south for many fe e t, they had shot o ff quite and area o f i t ,t h at is o ff from the further side o f the fissu re w all,d isclosin g a good grade of nearley white s a lt ,I t therefore happened that the secretary w^s able to see the be« showing yet had in the mine, But we must not get excited about i t , for before their comming lucker had one o f the boys run the air d r ill straight into the further wall of the fissu re about ten feet, and there struck practicalley clear mud that clogged the d r i l l . They are getting on slowley with the washing plant, and.in my opinion fct w ill not be a very effectiv e on e,w ill not leavd the sa lt in the brine for a su fficien t time to elaok out +>, ,4 . K 0ut ^ ‘d irt, but w in - d° ®°me d ~ 061 arid possibl^ey may && answer their purpose. They have the improvments iiii the well nearley completed, and are getting plenty o f water but v0ry fould s tu ff. It seesm President Hoover w ill signe the Boulder Dam proclamation today, and m&tiers w ill he under way. It is going to bring a lo t o f a ctiv ity to the desert, but St Thomas and a“few miles up the valley w ill have to go, and i t seems you Salt barrons and baronesses w ill have a purchaser for your s a lt . Say where are you going to spend your mcilney L I suppose i f I should suggest that ,errection o f an orphanage and theyoption o f several hundeded orphans to care for might keep you occupied and incidentaly supply you with* ample work, you might n<|t agree witH me• • Well here is hoping you get plenty in any event. I jimean by this la st remark, money, you may suite yourself about the orphans. Thoma e, Nevada Ju ly.I 2 t h ,1929 ' 4fi'rs Sadie g George rLos Angeles,Calif Dear Madam Please finde inclosed herewith two warrenta upon Treasurer of Virgin liv e r Salt Company, for payment o f monies, to -w i t :- One favor .of Dr Neel in the sum of $37»5Q»a® h*8 commission on Hid the la st three royaltie payments to Virgin liv e r Salt Company, and a similar one to myself* I desire that you send le tte r containing my cheo, adressed to me at Panaca,Nevada, I expect to leave for there within a few days, and to remain there for perhaps a week, and from the ere to Salt Lake,if I can. Please advise Dr Neel, and such other stockholders as you may see f i t , of the follow in g:- The hoys at the salt plant infoum me as follow s. The washing part of the washing plant seems farley e ffe c tiv e , hut the drying part of i t is a complete fa ilu re , a failu re not only because the iron is to light to stand the heat, but also because the £ & & & & & & & & & & & direct heat from thej! iron, when hot enough to dry the salt quickley and cheepley, discolors and spoils the product. They do not have any quantity, scarcley,of exposed sa lt clean enough to ship without &&&&& washing • They are now engaged in washing sa lt , spreading i t upon the floor, and turning i t by hand while drying by the atsmophere, and are getting a very good product in that manner, but the expense of such operation is prohibative for marketing, The boys also sayi&Rucker,wh<g- has now gon to Los Angeles, made statments to Brand, the foreman, indicating he was in a dilemma, and uncertain whtther to close the plant or try to keep on, but finaley decided to try i t a while longer, and see what could be done. A marketable salt'can^be produced by washing, and I thinkajjhere \ a a way whereby i t can be sa tisfa c to rily and^eaaonablevcheeplev OFFICERS and DIRECTORS VIRGIN BtYER SALT CO. in c . T. O.
