From the rear, a hand was raised and a member, admittedly not Jewish, asked me a question: ?Rabbi, all that you have said is very interesting, but why do you Jews keep insisting on recalling the Holocaust?? You Jews. I could not help but think of the Passover four sons! ?What mean Ye.? I could have dismissed this question (which was really a statement) but I knew deep down that it was not an uncommon one. If people don?t ask the question, then often they think it. For too many the Holocaust has no relevance, and hence no meaning. And the number grows with the passage of time. As each year fewer and fewer among us can tell the story - nay the history, first hand the Holocaust does indeed become a relic of the past. Thus each of us must have a response to the question - Why do we remember? Are we a morbid religion? Do we choose to think of death rather than life? No, for ours is, if anything, A Religion of Life. Thus, we remember, so we shall not forget. We remember because our hope is: in remembrance we will come to understand and pass on, generational conviction not to stand idly by the blood of ones neighbor. For us, the message is clear: We remember to affirm life and to affirm our ultimate hope in humanity. April 22nd, marks our community-wide observance of Yom Hashoa to be held this year at Temple Beth Shalom. Together with our Jewish and Non-Jewish brethren, we shall gather to remember and once again affirm our faith. B?shalom, Sanford D. HOLOCAUST ME?MORIAL SERVICES^ APRIL 22.1990 CNT JOINS IN COMMUNITY- WIDE HOLOCAUST MEMO?RIAL SERVICE A community-wide Holo?caust Memorial Service recogniz?ing Holocaust survivors will be held Sunday, April 22,1990 at 7:30 p.m., at Temple Beth Shalom, 1600 East Oakey Boulevard. Yom Hashoa, Holocaust Memorial Day, is observed world?wide. This observance memorial?izes the lives of the eleven million victims who perished in the Nazi concentration camp gas chambers and cremetoria. President Bush stated in his 1989 Days of Remem?brance Proclamation: ?It is fittin^^ that we take this opportunity to re-^P member the millions imprisoned and murdered during the Holocaust. Their memory will never let us for?get the evils men can inflict on one another.? Guest speaker for the eve?ning will be Hubert G. Locke, noted scholar, author, lecturer and humani?tarian. Locke is presently Dean Emeritus and Professor, Graduate School of Public Affairs at the Uni?versity of Washington. He is one of the original organizers of the annual Holocaust Scholars? Conference and currently serves on the Board of Directors, National Institute on the Holocaust. Professor Locke is a frequent visitor to Israel and works closely with Yad Vashem and the United States Holocaust Memorial Council. Page 2 Congregation Ner Tamid i PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE > The last few months have been filled with changes throughout the world. The East Block countries are opening to the West. Freedom seems to continue to gain momentum for Jews and non-Jews as the Berlin Wall has fallen and democratic elec?tions are held in former Communist strong?holds. Our Jewish brethren are leaving Russia in record numbers, more even than traveled with Moses on the most famous exodus in our history. Many of these Re?fusenik families can celebrate the festival of Passover saying, ?This year in Jerusa?lem?. How excited and proud we are to share in their joy. With so much activity in our world, Ner Tamid represents a stabilizing pres?ence for our members. We can come together to share reactions to these world?shaking events and to understand our part in these ever-changing times. The Board and I would like to see more of you at our services and special events, as we celebrate the new freedoms of others and learn of the impact of world affairs on our own lives. Highlights of the VHS video-cassette that will be projected on a 9x12-foot screen are in this sequence: Fanfare to Israel; President Herzog, Prime Minister Shamir and Vice-Premier Peres welcoming the audience; Choirs of Israel singing Psalm on Chorale by Bach in Hebrew; Tribute to 4,000 years of Jewish history in Hebrew by Yossi Yadin, in English by Gregory Peck and in French by Yves Montand; the Israel Philharmonic rendition as Masada is illumi?nated by 400 projectors timed to the strains of the music; and former Pris?oners of Zion Natal Sharansky, Ida Nudel and others are called to the stage. GOVERNOR'S CONFERENCE ON CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT How did you feel the last time you saw a father slap his child in a grocery store? What went through your mind when you heard an irate mother call her child stupid for spilling a soda down her dress? Do you experience any emotion as you pass another car and discover a toddler is not secured in a car seat? Did you respond? Do you wish you would have responded? If you didn?t respond, was it because: You didn?t feel you should interfere, you didn?t know how to deal with the situation, or you didn?t want to get in?volved? The above are examples of child abuse/neglect. They are the possible forerunners of a more tragic picture. Painting a new picture is the theme of the Governor?s Conference On Child Abuse/Neglect 1990. Prevention is the key and we are all responsible for protecting our children. This is twofold. First, public concern. We need organizations to develop programs to make us aware of prevention. Secondly, each one of us needs to become personally involved. How can you become involved? ....You can take a class to develop your parenting skills. ....You can offer ?respite care? to the parents. ....You can join a parent anonymous group. These are just a few suggestions. Once we all become personally involved, we are helping to paint a new picture. For more information, call 368-1533. We are now involved in a candy sale as a fundraiser for a proposed trip to sunny California. You may have seen many of us helping out at the Purim carnival. Aside from a highly successful bagel sale, there was a joint event with TNT (grades 6,7,&8). There were some serious discussions as well as lots of fun. NTTY is also looking forward to Spring Conclave in Arizona. Elections for SWFTY officers are held at that time. Best of luck to NTTY Vice President, Jennifer Gross, who is running for SWFTY treasurer. Congratulations to Dana Pretner and Lisa Kollins, both final?ists at the State Forensics championships in Reno, Nevada. NTTY members also assisted at the Purim carnival. We then piled back into the car and headed to our drop off destination - the ?Temple? - to meet all the Mom?s and Dad?s. We?re still planning April?s event so stay by the phone. TZEDAKAH GIFT Pictured above are Bill Feldman, Executive Director of the Jewish Family Services and students from our religious school: Michael Giordano, Keith Fishman and Paul Shlisky. These students are part of the school?s Tzedakah committee and had the privilege of presenting Mr. Feldman with a check to provide Passover meals for needy families. In keeping with the spirit of Passover, ?let all who are hun- g y come and eat?, and the prin?ciples of Tzedakah, the children of our religious school engaged in a special mitzvah this past month. All monies raised through their Tzedakah collection were donated to Jewish Family Services in or?der to help the Agency with their on-going efforts to provide assis?tance to underpriviledged fami?lies. This is especially meaningful at Passover time Anyone else who would like to provide assistance to such families please contact the Rabbi or Jewish Family Services. ORGfi. GOLDEN CHfil Dear Seniors: It seems as thought I have just written an article for the Bulletin and here I go again. { I was very pleased to see such a nice turnout at our last meeting and I want too say thank you for being there. With a lot of newcom?ers to Las Vegas our mem?bership will continue to grow. I have written to the State of Nevada consumer affairs division asking for a speaker for our seniors. I have gotten a reply from Perline Gray who is secretary to the commission saying that Shari Brooks Compton Smith will be our guest speaker. She is with consumer affairs division. Her topic will be ? Senior Citizen Scam? and will speak with us on April 19th at 1:00 p.m. Ms. Compton Smith has sent me her resume and after reading it, I am delighted to have her address our members. She is highly educated and brilliant. Our annual picnic in the park will take place on April 26th at noon. With good food and beverages and great weather our fun loving seniors will have an enjoyable day. Don?t forget, its at Paradise Park. Arrangement are being made for the event so mark this day on your calendars. Anyone that will volunteer to make this day real fund will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Dorothy Herman President Page 8 Congregation Ner Tamid NIZflTIONS SISTERHOOD SISTERHOOD NEWS On 3/1/90 Hortense Alper (our very competent President) named her nominating committee at the Sisterhood Board Meeting. It consisted of the following members: Rita Moses Malkin (chairperson), Barbara Rosen, Rosalie Lipton, Nina Tiep and Marilyn Glovinsky. We all did our best to come up with the most able candidates. Some of the nominees could not be reached by telephone Tuesday evening, so I will withhold the slate until everyone has been confirmed. Before the elections, we will have a Pot Luck Dinner (every member brings their own specialty!!!), and this will take place on the evening of May 10th (Thursday) at 7;30 p.m. On 3/7/90, A1 Whalen (our guest speaker that evening) was very warmly received. He implored us to save a part of what we earn (weekly or monthly). Implementation is the most important step to financial success, and a plana of action is the key ingredient. According to Mr. Whalen, we should all know how our money can work for us. He warned against (the biggest hindrance) ?procrastination?, and do it now!!!? On 3/11/90 (Sunday afternoon) The Purim Carnival was held. The weather was quite uncooperative, and the Carnival had to be moved indoors. The food (a big variety!) was very delicious! Although, there was much fun and games for the children and the adults bs well, the highlight for them was the arrival of Tinkerbell (the clown'). She proceeded to put make-up on the children?s faces (making them look adorable!). Rita Moses Malkin and Carol Treat, who co-chaired the event, (with some very helpful assistance from several sisterhood members really outdid themselves). There was an excellent turnout, and a great time was had by all! On April 12th (Thursday at noon), our Sisterhood Luncheon will be held. Our most interesting guest speaker will be Lotty Polis (not only one of our own members of CNT - with her husband Jerry), but also a successful author in her own right. She has written a book titled Richer bv Tomorrow: it?s how you save that counts! Through prudent saving from her household (clothing) budget, she increased her $60,000 annual income to $40,000 annually (by investing wisely!) She will speak about her unique system, which brings in more income than most women make in yearly salaries. The Sisterhood Luncheon (is open to all) at a small charge of $4.00 and there will be a charge of $6.00 per person (if you are not a member of the sisterhood). All guests who are thinking of joining our sisterhood will want to take advantage of our Sisterhood Luncheon (and our most interesting guest speaker)! Please R.S.V.P.
