REGATION NER TaMID BULLETIN June/July 2009 Vol 23. No. 6 Sivan/Av 5769 Special Shabbat in Honor of Rabbi Akselrad?s Honorary Degree Friday, June 5 at 7:30 pm Rabbi Akselrad will be honored at Congregation Ner Tamid, during a special Shabbat service on Friday, June 5 at 7:30 pm. Everyone is welcome to share in this special honor with Rabbi Akselrad. On May 18, 2009, Rabbi Akselrad received an Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Hebrew Union College-JIR in Los Angeles, California. Rabbi Akselrad attended the Los Angeles campus for part of his rabbinic training and received his Masters of Hebrew Letters from HUC-JIR in 1982. He was ordained in May 1984 and was awarded this doctorate after 25 years of service to the Jewish community. In February 1988, Rabbi Akselrad began his tenure at Congregation Ner Tamid. It proved the perfect place for him to spread his wings and create a vision of a vibrant reform synagogue in Las Vegas. Since those early years here at CNT, our synagogue has grown to over 700 families. He has served on numerous boards including the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas, Governor?s Advisory Council on Education Relating to the Holocaust, the Anti-Defamation League, Inter-faith Council of the NCCJ and is founder of the Board of Rabbis of Southern Nevada. ?Twenty-five years is a long time in the rabbinate?, reflected Rabbi Akselrad, ?but it has gone by in the blink of an eye. 1 can still remember the first wedding I officiated, the first funeral, the first baby naming and first bris. Yet, to this day, each ceremony is still special and precious. I feel truly blessed.? When asked if he has fulfilled all his goals as a ^j^abi, he responds with a twinkle in his eye, and a wide smile, ?Oh, I am just getting started.... I am just getting started.? r i CNT?s 2009 Adult B?nai Mitzvah Class Invites you to share in their joy As they are called to the Torah Saturday, June 13 ~ 10:00 am Jackie Chenin, Yvonne Greenfield, Phyllis Ruth Hoffman, Jacky Rosen, Harry Sax, Lori Scrima, Harrison Sheld L______________________________________________________________________________4 Special Guest Speaker Friday, June 12 @ 7:30 pm Elliot Karp, President &. Available in the Temple office.CHAl (LIFE) CAMPAIGN In an effort to make the act of giving fun, affordable, inclusive and relevant to our heritage, we've designed a new campaign that we hope everyone will join. While our congregation depends upon the generosity of major donors, it is the entire congregation's support that makes Ner Tamid a viable and thriving community. Without each and every one of you, our Temple would never be able to continue it's development as one of the most special congregations in the country. Therefore, we hope that you and your family will consider one of the campaign levels. You can easily add it to your existing auto-payment plan by contacting Lynette Solomon in the Temple office at 733-6292 ext 212. Forms are available in the Temple office or you can donate on our website, under ?Donations", using a Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover card. We need your help now, more than ever. While these are the toughest times to be giving, give we must. Thank you in advance.... CNT. Bruce Matza, Temple President-Elect Introducing, your Temple President-Elect, Bruce Matza...... Annie and I arrived at Congregation Ner Tamid less than thre years ago. We were excited about being part of the new facilities and looked forward to attending services, participating in a few programs and generally keeping a low profile. Suddenly, I am your next president and involved in meetings, budgets, activities, programs and fund raisers. To prepare for this much accelerated challenge, I have had occasion to meet with board members, clergy, staff, past presidents and a host of individuals equally committed to the success of this congregation. 1 have come to understand the financial challenges facing Ner Tamid. We were unable to complete the capital campaign for the new facilities before the economy collapsed and we have experienced increased operating costs. In many ways we don?t have a financial problem as much as we have a timing problem. On the positive side, we are serving more congregants than ever with our membership growing to over 700 families. We are committed to maintaining the levels of programming, services, special events, holiday celebrations and everything else you have come to expect from Ner Tamid. There are times when a temple needs its? congregants and a time when the congregants need the temple. This is very much a time for both. 1 look forward to meeting and working with all of you. Please do not hesitate to share how we can continue to make Congregation Ner Tamid your home away from home. PLEASE GIVE GENEROUSLY WHEN YOUR KOL NIDRE APPEAL ARRIVES Appeals should be arriving in the mail this month. CNT Proudly Presents.... Summer Movie Nights W/Rabbi Adar ?Praying in her own Voice" Tuesday, June 23 at 6:30 pm - This powerful film by Yael Katzir documents the courageous struggle of a religious female?s group called Women of the Wall movement for equality next to the wailing wall, perhaps the holiest place on earth for Jews. The story of the Women of the Wall is a test case for the deprived status of women in Israeli public life. The film is an outcry protesting religious coercion and the violent silencing of women. It?s a film that raises many questions about the battle of the sexes within the religious Jewish world. Cost for the movie is just $5 per person. To RSVP or to purchase tickets, contact Beth Bowman at 733-6292 ext 205 or email her at Bbowman@lvnertamid.org. This movie is generously made possible by CNT Sisterhood. "The Band's Visit" Tk B j; v -i Thursday, June 25 at 6:30 pm - ?The Band?s Visit?, the first feature by Israeli writer and director - - Eran Kolirin, flirts recklessly with this sweet-and-sour comedy. The film opens with the band, comprised I of members of the Egyptian police force, heading to Israel to play at the Inaugural Ceremony of an Arab jlLi hit | arts center, only to find themselves lost in the wrong town. This film is rated PG-13, some adult *?***?*k language. This film is FREE and open to everyone. We will be serving popcorn and lemonade. RSVP appreciated to Beth Bowman at 733-6292 ext 205. June/July 2009 5 A Message From Rabbi Akselrad This June brings the end of my two year term as President of the Board of Rabbis. One of the things that I most proud of accomplishing has been the bringing together of ouif Federation, Jewish Family Services and our area Congregations in support of Project Ezra. This is a program which provides vocational services and tzedakah for those looking for work and who have experienced unexpected financial stress due to job loss or illness. This project was born out of necessity but was created through faith. Faith that it would work-that we would have people submitting job opportunities to the program, faith that everyone would work together in promoting it, and faith that we could raise the funds to make sure that the program would be vital and successful. It was a HUGE leap of faith-the largest grant that our Federation has ever given for any program. And our Federation made this commitment knowing that it still had its other obligations to its partners here and abroad. Organizations in Israel, in Europe, and right here in Clark County that truly rely on Federation?s support. Scholarships for camp, our special needs program in our religious school, Jewish Day Schools, and Senior Life Line. These are among a few of the programs which Federation supports that make a difference daily in people?s lives. Recently, Elliot Karp, President & CEO of the Federation, asked all of the rabbis to make an extra push towards our membership for support. Compared to last year, the campaign is short about 1 million dollars. We all know that without the dollars there is no funding for things that matter. And so I am asking you to help by giving whatever you can to this year?s campaign by going on the Federation web site at or by calling the Federation office at 702 732-0556. We are all asked to give. Daily we have solicitations galore. But if we don?t take care of our community, who will? And if not now, when? B?shalom, Rabbi Sanford Akselrad Special Guest Speaker Friday, June 12 at 7:30 pm Elliot Karp, President & CEO Jewish Federation of Las Vegas Come meet the new President & CEO of the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas, Elliot Karp, at Shabbat on June 12. He has specialized and extensive experience in all aspects of fundraising and financial resource development including developing strategic development plans, major gifts cultivation and solicitation as well as significant achievement in directing successful capital and endowment campaign initiatives. He also has a tremendous understanding and appreciation of the broader communal agenda and has professional managerial experience that includes budgeting, community relations, leadership and human resource development and staff supervision. Elliot has a Masters Degree from the Benjamin S. Hornstein Program in Jewish Communal Service from Brandeis University.^J He served more than 13 years as Director of Financial Resource Development for the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati. He has held? senior management positions with Jewish Federations in Columbus, Ohio and Philadelphia, where he served as Director of Leadership and Human Resource Development for six years.
