May 4th the Sisterhood Executive Board and members will conduct the Sabbath. This service promises to be warm and loving with Sisterhoods outgoing and incoming board and many many members participating. On May 11 the Fourth and Fifth Grade will hold their Shabbat dinner and sponsor the Oneg. The Temple will also honor our wonderful School Principal, Jackie McRitchie, all our dedicated Teachers and their helpful Aids. The Confirmation Class of 1990 will conduct the Shabbat on June 1 st. Pictures will be taken and congratulations exchanged. On June 8th our fast growing Brotherhood will conduct the Shabbat. This also promises to be an evening of joy for us all. In addition in May, we will have the baby naming of Marisa Kim Godorov, beautiful daughter of Gail and Harvey Godorov and the Bar Mitzvah of Robbie Worth, son of Hyla and Ron Worth. This is a wonder?ful Mitzvah and an opportunity to share the gift of Shabbat. yoi Page 2 Rabbi's Message: -? ?Changes in our Religious School Move Forward? "Nothing is constant but change." This axiom, often cited, is never more true than the past few months at Congregation Ner Tamid. Our staff has grown, and so too have our programs. But perhaps the most excidng changes lie not in the past, but in the coming year, especially when it comes to our Religious School program. Since coming to the Congregation one of the first concerns mentioned to me was the problem of the dual tract schedule which has meant that some students start at 8:30 a.m. at Hebrew while there siblings do not start until 9:30 a.m.. I think that we have found an excellent solution which will allow us to better utilize our teaching staff as well. Starting this fall, religious school will start for everyone (grades k-7) at 9:00a.m.. School will endat 12:15 p.m.. Hebrew will be taught as part of our curriculum for grades 4 and 5 from 9:00-10:05 a.m. and for grades 6 and 7 from 11:05-12:15 p.m.. This will allow Hebrew teachers to teach twice Sunday morning, allowing us to better utilize our staff. This also means that Hebrew will be a required accepted part of our curriculum for all students grade 4-7 whether or not they will be studying for B?nai Mitzvah. Our religious school committee recognizes the fact that Hebrew is important skill in its own right for any educated Jew. However, it should be noted that many students change their minds regarding Bar/Bat Mitzvah when they enter 6th or 7th grades finding out too late that they need Hebrew to prepare properly for their ceremony. This change will allow all students an opportunity to learn Hebrew and feel comfortable in any Synagogue. What about Thursdays? This was our first year in expanding our Hebrew Program. Quite frankly it has been met with mixed results. Some parents are unable to drive their children because both parents work. Others find that their children?s schedules do not permit them to regularly attend classes. And still others find that by the time their children arrive home from public school, they just do not have enough time to take their children to Hebrew School. Nonetheless, we are committed to a midweek Hebrew program for those who do want more for their children. Starting this fall our Thursday program will become an optional ?Scholars Program? for students in grade 5-7. There will be a separate fee and the curriculum will be parallel to that of Sunday?s Hebrew program. Thursdays will focus more on conversational Hebrew, grammar as well as reading fluency. All students are eligible for this program however, strict attendance will be enforced to allow this program to be as enriching as possible. Finally, I would like to just say a word or two about a potentially exciting new program for our Temple. Preschool education. Did I say Preschool? Yes! One of the most often asked questions by our Congregants with small children (myself included!) is, ?When will our T cm pie begin offering a preschool?? My answer until this point has been, ?We hope to start one someday, but the time just isn?t right We need to have a firm membership base and a commitment by our members to support such an endeavor.? The time is now right. At our April Board meeting, the Temple?s Board of Trustees firmly endorsed the concept of a preschool at our Temple. I am personally spear-heading a special committee to bring a preschool to our Temple as soon as possible. Initial studies by State Welfare, the Health Department and the Fire Department indicate that our facility would be ideally suited for such a wonderful project. If this project is to move ahead, I need your help. A separate Preschool fund is being establish to provide for this project None of the proceeds will be used until we are licensed and ready to start our preschool. We must have those funds in hand however to proceed further. Can I count on your help? Education in Las Vegas is of prime importance to anyone moving here. ?How are the schools?? is a constantly asked question. When people ask about a Temple this question comes up as well. Our school has grown. So too have our needs. Please help the Temple in this next exciting and natural expansion of our educational program. After all, nothing is constant but change. It is up to us, however, to shape the direction of that change. B?shalom, Sanford D. Akselrad RabbiCongregation Ner Tamid FESTIVITIES PLfiNNED TO CELEBRATE ISRAEL'S BIRTHDAY A day of festivities for the entire family to enjoy has been planned by the Council of Jewish Organizations of the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas in recognition of the fact that Israel has continued to serve for the past 42 years as the homeland for the Jewish people. ?Exodus to Independence?, a community wide celebration of Israel?s 42nd birthday and the mass exodus of Soviet Jews to Israel will be held on Sunday, May 13, at Temple Beth Sholom, 1600 E. Oakey Blvd., from 1-5 p.m. Israel Independence Day is actually April 30th but the celebration in Las Vegas will be on Sunday, May 13th to allow for total com?munity involvement. Entertainment, Israeli foods and refreshments (all kosher), a walk- thon and booths with displays and cultural items for sale will be provided for your en?joyment at this festive occasion. The day will start with a ?42nd Israeli Birthday and Operation Exodus Walk-a- thon?. An orientation for the walkers will start at 11:30 a.m. during which walkers will briefed on the Soviet Jewry situation and on walk itself. As walkers begin the walk, which will take place from 12-12:40 p.m., they will be lead in song by Temple Beth Am Cantorial Soloist Sara Green. The walk-a-thon and rally is spon?sored by the Nate Mack B?nai B?rith Men?s Lodge. Walkers will be given tee-shirts as well as other items and will begin the two- mile walk from Temple Beth Sholom. There no charge to walk. Bring your dancing shoes. Israeli songs and music will be featured throughout the day for your listening and dancing pleasure. If you have been wanting to join or find out more information about any of the Jewish organizations or temples in town, this the day to have your questions answered. There will be information booths set-up for many of the organizations and temples in addition to cultural displays with items for sale. Other booths will be retail outlets for several businesses. Tickets are required for entry into facility and for participation in the day?s tivities. Admission for adults is $3; $2 for students and $1 for seniors and kids 6-12. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE ?THIS YEAR IN LAS VEGAS" What a wonderful Passover season we enjoyed at Ner Tamid! Our four model seders for our ever-growing religious school were beautifully and conducted by Rabbi Akselrad. Principal Jackie McRitchie carefully coordinated the activities. Educational Vice President Bobbie Bemay worked diligently to insure our helpful parents provided all our seder needs. She was ably assisted by Linda Fishman, Debbie Karlin, Karen Marano, Denise Schnitzer, Lynne Schuchmann, and Kathleen Scott. A special thanks to all of you. A first for Ner Tamid was a ?teaching seder? for our ever- active Outreach group also led by the Rabbi. Attended by almost fifty people, Chairperson Lois Doctors and the Outreach committee should be proud of this group?s many successful events. A special mazel tov to Lois and Malcolm Doctors on the upcoming marriage of Gillian to Michael Wells. Our congregational seder was an outstanding success, due to the wonderful efforts of Dyane Kohnen, Special Events Chairper?son. She worked efficiently and tirelessly too make sure all ran smoothly for our full house of 250 members and guests. The Rabbi conducted a warm and meaningful Seder (covered briefly by Channel 3 News) and managed to find an extremely well-hidden afikomen, with the help of the delighted congregation. Our only problem was not enough kepot! It should be our biggest problem. Also deserving of thanks are Ruth Fite, our Executive Director, and Irene and Nancy, our unsung office staff who were invaluable in assisting Dyane. My parents are Hyla and Ron Worth and I have a younger sister, Aimee. I?m in the 7th grade at Cannon Jr. High School. I play the saxophone and now I?m learning to play the drums. My favorite things to do are fishing, knee-boarding and play basket?ball. This past year I?ve been preparing for my upcoming Bar Mitzvah with much help from Melissa Glovinsky and great en?couragement from my best friend David Chenin. Page 4 3 YEAR OLD TWIN BOYS NEED BONE MARROW TRANSPLANTS TO SURVIVE 3 year old Oakland twins, El?liott & Martin Lozano, suffer from a rare genetic disorder, Hunter?s Syn?drome. Both of these identical twins need costly bone marrow transplants if they hope to ever lead normal, healty lives. Without the transplants, Elliott and Martin have only a few short years to live. Volunteers from around the Greater Bay Area have banded together with COTA - The Children?s Organ Transplant Asso?ciation - to raise the estimated $300,000 needed to give these youngsters their chance to life. Elliott and Martin live with their mother, Kalya, in Oakland, California. While not improvished, Kalya cannot afford the estimated $300,000 that these transplants will cost. COTA has begun the task of raising funds for these boys by form?ing the Greater Bay Area Chapter. 100% of the money raised for Elliott and Martin will be used for them. Congregation Ner Tamid 246 ATTEND PASSOVER SEDER Our Temple oerflowed on the first night of Passover with our tradi?tional Passover Seder. The service began at 6:30 p.m. with the candle lighting by Joni Akselrad. Rabbi Akselrad conducted the service with the melodious accompianment of Bella Schwartz singing and our Choir Direc?tor, Peter Bugel, on piano. Dinner was delicious and in keeping with tradition we had matzoh ball soup, roast chicken, brisket and many more tasty dishes.In keeping with another tradition at Ner Tamid, the afikomen was hidden and Rabbi Akselrad searched and searched. The entire room particpated by singing Dayenu, softly when Rabbi Akselrad was far away and louder as he got closer to the afikomen. For their participation, all the children received silver dollars from Rabbi Akselrad - an unexpected treat. During the evening, Channel 3 News stopped by to film our beautiful Seder. In his interview, Rabbi Akselrad explained the significance of Passover to Jews all over the world. A warm and loving evening was had by all. Our very efficient chairperson, Dyane Kohnen outdid herself in preparing for this wonderful event. Nothing was left to chance, thanks to her. And thanks to everyone who attended and participated. Wilner Foundation grants are made to recognize, distinguish, honor, and reward out?standing Jewish youth for their religious committment and their social action aimed at enhancing the community in which they live. The grant is considered an Achievement Award. The award is given to financially assisst the recipient youth to participate in activi?ties such as summer camp, day camp, enrichment classes or seminars, travel to a Kinnus, travel to Israel with an organized pilgrimage, or sholarly projects. The award amount is given in the name of the recipient directly to the organization or school providing the activity for which the grant is given. In 1990 there will be six awards of $400 each. Itty Bitty Nitty had their very first ?Mystery Night? Sunday, April 8th, thanks to the trust and cooperation of all the Itty Bitty Nitty Mom?s and Dad?s. Special thanks to my East and West Side Drivers... Bobbie Bemay, Arlene Arbach, Susan Shlitsky, Gail and Adam Godorov. We couldn?t have done it without you! We all met at 7:15 p.m. in the Convention Center of the Riviera Hotel for the 8 p.m. show of ?Splash?. We had front center stage seats (did we get ?splashed?) with a special surprise of ?Welcome Sheryl & Kids? on the blackboard during one of the main acts. I brought the treats (Reeses Pieces) and all 12 kids had a drink of their choice...a Shirley Temple or Roy Rogers! Our ?Mystery Night? proved to be an evening to remember. For the advisors, the most memorable part of the evening was when the comedian, Jerry Villa, went into his routine of ethnic jokes. He asked if there were any ?Jewish? people in the audience. You never saw 12 hands go up in the air so fast. We were proud to see how proud our kids are of their heritage. It is called When Livin g Hurts and is by Dr. Sol Gordon. Intended for teenagers and young adults, this is a readable, con?temporary account of the myriad of problems young people, indeed all of us, face. It is a tragic commentary that suicide is the second leading killer for those 15-24 years of age. This 127 page paperbacks talks directly to the reader, asking serious questions and then giving thought?ful, realistic answers. Among top?ics considered are:depression (yes, you do have a right to feel bad some?times), relationships with parents, God and religions, and sex and love worries and facts. There are expla?nations of many common feelings such as vulnerability forgiveness and optimism that encourages us to be?lieve the future will be a positive one. There is a very sensitive dis?cussion of suicide and dealing with oneself or one?s friends as potential suicides. The tragedy is that we need this kind of text. The positive note is that it is available and has the poten?tial to bring understanding as well as concrete information to young people in a crisis situation. The con?clusion is both simple and eloquent, ?Each individual is a unique being...with the will and freedom to shape his or her own fate.? When Living Hurts begins with a quote from William James, ?Believe that life is worth living and your belief will help to create the fact?. It is an appropriate conclu?sion also. HAVE YOU STARTED YOUR BASEBALL COLLECTION? For those of you who missed Brotherhood?s Baseball night with Smokey-our regrets! Words cannot express the fun had by all. Paul Cohen, our superb chef, cooked those hot dogs to perfection and many thanks to Linda Schnitzer for her wonderful idea of Dove bars for dessert. It was an enjoyable evening for all and some of us even started collecting cards. SEX OVER 40 COMES TO GOLDEN CHAI Dear Seniors: I have more exciting news to tell you!!! On May 3rd, we will be entertained by David London and company. He is with the Continental Hotel with the show SEX OVER 40. His group will put on a show for us. Isn?t that exciting???? Honestly, I can hardly to wait to see it. Please be sure to attend this meeting, as I wouldn?t want anyone of you to miss it. On May 17th we will have Councilman Steve Miller as our speaker. His topic will be on anything pertinent to senior citizens, a question and answer period will follow. Israel Independence Day will take place on May 13th from 1 to 5 p.m. and will be held at Temple Beth Sholom this event is called ?Exodus Independence Day 1990?. I would like to ask our senior to volunteer on that day for an hour to sell tickets for food and many other things. Admission for adults is $3.00 and $2.00 for students. Seniors $1.00 and kids 6-12 year of age $1.00. There will be dancing and singing of Israeli songs and music will be featured throughout the day. Food will b e Jewish and Israeli delicacies such as Falafel, hummus, pita bread pastry filled with spinach and cheese, gefilte fish and challah will be served all day. All foods are ?kosher?. It consisted or Rita Moses Malkin (chairperson), Barbara Rosen, Rosalie Lipton, Nina Tiep Hortense Alper (our president), was also nominated for the same office that she currently holds, however, she declined to run because of personal reasons. The Sisterhood General Elections will be held at the Temple on May 10th, (Thursday evening) at 7:30 p.m. admittance ?fee? will be any specialty that you can come up with (and bring!). Our Sisterhood luncheon for April 12th was cancelled (due to the fact that it was during the Passover holidays, will be rescheduled for a future date. Our guest speaker Lottv Polls was extremely gracious and understanding of our dilemma. Our Donor Luncheon (which you should certainly be thinking about) will be held on May 6th (Sunday) at 1:00 p.m. It will be at the Santa Fe Restaurant 4930 West Flamingo (cross street is Decatur). It is in the Renaissance West Friday, May 4th is a special evening for Sisterhood. This special Shabbat is dedicated to our wonderful Sisterhood. We will be conducting services along with Rabbi Akselrad. We urge everyone to attend and show the 'rest of the Congregation how committed we are to our fantastic Temple.
