Through stories on television, radio and the newspaper, we are all aware that the ?Internet? has quickly begun to change the way people communicate. Congregations throughout the coun?try are slowly becoming aware of the impact and usefulness of this technology. Our Synagogue too, has been a leader in trying to make our Temple, its staff and leaders more accessible through the Inter?net. Currently our Synagogue has its own webpage-thanks to the dedication of Scott Miller and Scott Dockswell. Our web page can be found at: http://info.lv.com/CNT. J This fall we received our first member who investigated our Temple via the Internet while living in California! We also, have an ?e- mail? havurah of around 70 Temple families which allows me to share up-to-the-minute Temple happen?ings with our membership. In addition, it allows me to stay in contact with our members and their children wherever they might move. Currently I am conducting conversion lessons with a student in Japan(l), and corresponding with others in Israel, Australia, California, Washington, Oregon as well as plain old Las Vegas. Through this unique medium I and others in the group are able to offer quick advice and share stories and questions with one another. If you would like to add your name to our list, please send your name to Rabak@aol.com. One additional thought: for those who shrug and say, ?this is for another generation, not me??it is really quite easy to join the fun. And for others who say, ?I prefer human contact, not this computer stuff?. So do I, but like phone answering machines, beepers, and voice mail, this is yet another way to bring ideas together. It is my hope and prayer, however, that we never lose site of the fact that my goal and that of our Temple is always ?people first?. Whether it is via computer, a letter, a phone call, or a visit, as always I want to hear your concerns and your ideas. This year, we gained over 100 new families. This is more families than I started with when I began nine years ago at Congregation Ner Tamid! Your involvement and willingness to get involved is crucial to the continued to success of our Congregation. !Ra66iSanfen-((ytfseirad^^ A 2 A A Congregation Ner Tamid November 1996 tjob Unger President Drew Levy VP Administration Allan Nathanson VP Ways & Means Jacky Rosen VP Membership David Stahl VP Religious Activities Scott Stolberg VP Education Scott Dockswell VP Social Alan Mann Treasurer Debra Kaner Secretary Sylvia Beller Trustee Stacey Yahraus Trustee Ruth Urban Trustee David Mendelson Trustee Jon Sparer Trustee Rita Goldstein Trustee Esther Saltzman Trustee Kenny Epstein Trustee Janis Rounds Sisterhood Jeff Markewich Brotherhood Helen Zliser Golden Chai Joey Unger NTTY Shayna Unger TNT Jerry Gordon Past President Cal Lewis Past President Eileen Kollins Past President Kenneth Schnitzer Past President Dr. David Wasserman Past President Dr. Steve Kollins Past President Michael Cherry Kjgene Kirshbaum* Past President Past President Leo Wilner Advisor Rabbi Sanford Akselrad Ex Officio ?Deceased Jr. CQMGR?GATfOM We hVfU HAV? Many of us remember the overwhelming gen?erosity of our congregants which resulted in the Board orTrustees de?cision to construct the sanctuary, new classrooms and offices. There are certainly no regrets by anyone in getting the construction started and all of us are quite proud of the completed Sanctuary and inspired by its beauty. We are grateful to all who have contributed so generous?ly with their contributions and ser?vice to the Congregation. They should all be proud each and every time they enter the Sanctuary. There was one major disadvantage which has resulted from the start of construction in May of 1995. We started before all of the funds nec?essary to fully cover the costs were pledged by our congregants. This was a calculated decision by the Board of Trustees based on the ex?pected growth in membership and the expectation that new members would contribute at approximately the same rate as our previous mem?bership. All members joining since the construction began have been asked to contribute at least the min?imum required of all members. However, we have never approached new members to increase their con?tributions above the minimum. It is easy to see the number of mem?bers who have contributed additional voluntary amounts by examining our Wall of Honor in the lobby. The wall recognizes those families and indi?viduals who will have contributed over five years amounts between $2,500 and $150,000. From the initial $2,000,000 raised, over $1,500,000 came from these in?creased voluntary gifts. Based on the membership of approximately 400 families at that time, the aver?age voluntary five year gift was $5,000. If we were to receive an average gift from our newer mem?bers in proportion to the previous response during the initial cam?paign, our Sanctuary fundraising would be successfully concluded. These new funds would amount to $750,000 from the 150 new fami?lies. With so many new ideas and projects ahead for our Congrega?tion, 1 am anxious and excited to get started on all of them. How?ever, as members of the Board of Trustees, the financial stability of the Temple must be our paramount concern. As a result, completing the Sanctuaiy Fund Campaign must be our first priority. This task is well within our reach. I recognize that it is much more motivating to pledge funds to a building that is about to get started than to pay?ing for it after completion, but please take the time now to con?sider your participation in the vol?untary funding of our Congregational home. In addition to the wonderful feeling that comes with this particular act of giving, all new pledges will be added to the Wall of Honor in our lobby in the appropriate sizes based on contribution level. Now is the time to finish this task and get on with the building of our pro?gramming and the in?stitutional strength of our Congregation itself. November 1996 c/L S p eeial (Jo (Belong. A 3The new year started off with a tremendous celebration at our Simchat Torah Services. As usual, our Junior Choir did an outstanding job leading Services. Thank you to ail the kids for getting ready for their first performance in only two Sunday School sessions! They are truly amazing! With only a moment to breathe between events, our Adult and Junior Choirs began rehearsals in October for the upcoming Jazz Shabbat Service. The Adult Cnoir is veiy excited to have another opportunity to sing the wonderful compositions of Jose? Bowen and the kids are enjoying doing something so different. We are especially thrilled that the compos?er himself will be joining us this year. This is something you don?t want to miss! Later in the month our junior Choir will be joining other local Jewish youth choirs in the opening night of The Festival of Lights. The program will take place at the Sands Expo on November 27. It is a wonderful chance to bring Jewish children in our community together and I am pleased to be able to have our choir be a part of this event. ?Befla ROM THE ADMINISTRATOR?S DESK FIVE HUNDRED...What a nice round number to begin the New Year with. Actually, the membership number at Rosh Has- hanah was 542!!! How did we reach this membership achievement? There are many reasons and the easiest to remember are those most recent in our minds. The new, now a year old, Sanctuary and associated refurbished facility. The sweat and foresight of our leaders like Jeriy Gordon, Mike Cherry and David Gross who led a wonderfully dedicated group of men and women to the completion of a vision. Of course, the growth would not have been realized if it wasn?t for our clergy; without the vision and love of our Rabbi, we would still be at the 100 member mark of 8 years ago. Bella, with all her music, brings warmth and softness into our home. The reputation of our Religious School created by Jackie and her staff perpetuates our growth-our future members. History shows that dedica?tion and warmth not only keep people affiliated, its? reputation brings new members to it. My office staff and those who volunteer in the office, past and present, have presented the best ?FIRST IMPRES- SION? in town to the families looking for a family. They are working very hard this year-say hello to them. They need to get to know you better to help you better. The leadership from Dr. Eugene Kirshbaum to Bob Unger and the resourceful people they have surrounded themselves with are indeed the foundation for our success. What has really made our Synagogue reach the level of growth we are celebrating today is YOU, our families. We are here to provide the warmth, understand?ing, programs and services to you that are meaningful. We hope that the pride you feel as members of Ner Tamid will allow you to reach out to other people who need to find a ?Special Place to Belong.? Just as a reminder, we will be sending out our 1997 Billing Statements in early December. The Board of Trustees voted a 5% dues increase last year, for the dues years of 1996 and 1997. This will be shown on your statement. Also on your statement will be the dues reduction you have earned for your purchase of Scrip. You can pay your dues for the year 1997 in December or throughout the year of 1997. Monty A MessAee From Miussa! We had a wonderful month full of programs in October. During the month of Novem?ber we will have our annual Chanukah Bazaar with deli?cious things to eat and plenty of shopping. Every year the Sisterhood nas a raffle where all of the proceeds go to the Campershipfund. OurCamp- ership program is off to a great start this year. I appreciate your support. 1 want to thank my co-chairs Gail Husney and Maxine Gratz for working so hard on this program to make it as beneficial for the children as possible. That?s all I can say about the response to our annual High Holiday Food Drive. The response was tremendous. David and I de?livered to WEAP about 25 bags and three cartons of food. They were very grateful for our continued support. I then called Jewish Family Services and told them they could come and pick up the remainder of the food. They were also grateful and told me that they could probably be stocked for close to a year on what we donated. On behalf of the So?cial Action Committee I want to thank everyone who participated in this activity. We have helped not only the Jewish Community but those less fortunate outside of the Jewish Community. t Please remember to bring booi to donate to the library for use b' the Jewish Day School housed in our building, just think what a difference it would make if each family brought just one book. We have over 500 families in our congrega?tion at this time. REMINDER!!! Chanukah is coming up. Please make sure that we have your away from home student?s address so we may send them a Chanukah goody package. We would hate to miss anyone but if we do not have the address we can not send the package. Contact the Temple to pro- ?v vide your information ASAP. ?BetteStafiC November 1996 NO PERFECT TIME The holidays are early...the holidays are late. School starts too early...school starts too late. Is there a perfect time, well I think not! When you have over 200 students in religious school, how can we please everyone? Well, we try even if we cannot always succeed. Our students are learning Hebrew through a developmental program in grades 4 through 7, andit is working. The Post B?nai Mitzvah program is continuing to grow in size as students decide to go beyond B?nai Mitzvah at CNT. The Bat/Bar Mitzvah ceremony is an important part of a students? life, but choosing to go beyond is the true lesson we hope to teach as educators. It is never too late or too early to learn the lessons of living Jewishly. Chanukah is getting closer as we can tell by our Temple Calendar. Perhaps there is a lesson you can teach outside the classroom to your child. A child can give up one gift for a needy child, or the cost of a gift can be donated to tzadakah. In our home, when our children were younger, we asked them to find eight items not worn or played with for a few months that were perfectly good and give it to the needy. Chanukah is too early or perhaps Thanksgiving would have been a better date, which in that case makes it too late. Reminding our children that what we learn in religious school is not just for the classroom, it is for life, can never begin too early. >JadQ?!f(ee%gp Education Director Round trip air from Las Vegas, NV to Washington, D.C. 3 Nights at the Hofidag Inn Capitol Guided tours for Wo (2) dags Two (2) dinners Porterage, Hotel taxes included Tour includes alt of the traditional sites plus, Bnai Brith Jewish Museum, The Klutznick Museum, The oldest sgnagogue in the nations capitol, U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. gou Would tike more information, please call Jackie Fleekop at 733-6292. Charleston and express their feelings on racism and ignorance. The National Conference sponsors this wonderful gathering twice a year to create a better understanding of cultural diversity. The weekend of Sept. 27, 28, 29, I was fortunate enough to volunteer as a counselor and witness 80 delegates broadening their perspectives. Through sharing and activity, the delegates could leave knowing there is something every one of us can do to end hatred. I found this to be a wonderful event and feel it should be supported by the general community. Ner Tamid Temple Youth NTTY had an eventful month! During October, NTTY sent 15 members to a very fun and successful week?end in Tempe, AZ for SWFTY?s second regional event of the year, SAW (Social Action Weekend). It was great. Everyone that went had a wonderful time. No?vember is a very exiting month as well, we are devot?ing much time to the planning of Winter Conclave, which will be held in December. This year our very own youth group will be hosting the event here in Las Vegas, and we would love to see everybody at our conclave planning meetings. We enjoy seeing new faces and we encourage you to come to our meetings every Sunday night from 6-8pm at Ner Tamid. A9 AAUXILIARIES & Golden Chcii Once again Golden Chai will participate in the Sisterhood?s Chanukah Bazaar by manning the baked goods table. Also, our ladies will provide lots of homemade cakes, brownies and cookies to please your palate. If anyone else feels moved to bake for the occasion, we will gratefully accept your donation. The card party scheduled for October has been postponed until November 24, Sunday afternoon from 12:30 to 4:30. The price is still $3, and refreshments will be served. Hopefully, this time, all will go as planned. This year is rapidly dwindling away, and it?s already time for our nominating committee to get next year?s slate of officers on line. Our election is in December and installation is in January. Chai members are urged to get involved. It?s a great way to make freinds, and it really isn?t too much work. We look forward to having another great board that will keep Golden Chai flourishing. Happy Thanksgiving and Shalom, iHetaiZhser ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS ARE NOW ON SALE!!
