Our 2nd annual ?Goods & Services: Bid N? Buy? auction will be held May 9th, 1992. Mark your calendars now and reserve that special date so you and your guests will be able to participate in all the excitement. In order for this fundraising event to be a suc?cess, we need donations from all Temple members, their friends, or their contacts in the community. Last year?s auction was an overwhelming suc?cess thanks to the generosity and hard work of our members. Our goals this year are much higher as the Temple?s needs are greater. We will gladly accept donations of any goods or services that can be auctioned off. Suggestions (though the list is endless): trips, jewelry, clothing, sporting goods, show and sporting event tickets, t.v.?s, v.c.r.?s, computers, driving lessons, dance in?struction, dog training, baby sitting, airline tickets, etc., etc., etc. For further information, please contact co-chair?persons Lois Doctors (456-0915), Dyane Kohnen (870-2204), or the Temple office (733-6292) In Memoriam We record with deep sorrow the recent passing of Vernon Miller Beloved Husband of Gail Miller Beloved Brother of Anita Moll Samuel Schwartz Beloved Brother of Sylvia Frank Yahrzeits February 7th Sylvia Brown Lillian Bulavsky Harry Raynes Jack Radman Aaron Wasserman Marie Scolar Rachel Eisenberg Lester Kallett February 14th Alexander Rodgers Abraham Rosenblum Mark Norman Julian Rivkind Irving Wender Irving Fenster Frances Mocugni Sadie Glickman Harry Weinstein Ben Adler Minnie Prezant February 21st Tony Bergman Bessie Zuck Hyman Kahn Larry Joseph Harold Robbins Belle Cutler Lena Rogers Joyce Friedman February 28th Ellena Hauenstein Louis Ponemon Samuel ChamsonCongregation Ner Tamid Rabbi???s Message ?God, Do You Hear Me? I?m Talking to You...? As a Rabbi, I am asked almost daily a surprising array of questions about Judaism. But the most difficult questions often come not from my Congregants, but from my five-year-old daughter, CJ. Take, for example, a few days ago when I was putting her to bed. She is a smart child, and therefore saves all her most profound questions for the end of the day. Perhaps it?s because this is when she is most inspired, or perhaps it?s a way of putting off the inevitable ? bedtime ? a few more minutes. As I tucked her in that night, she looked at me and said, ?Daddy, I?m mad at you!? Mad ? at me? I wondered why she would be mad at me? As I reflected to myself, I realized that the list of possibilities was endless: not buying her a particular toy, making her finish her dinner, turning off the TV. Rather than guessing, I decided to come right to the point: ?Why are you mad at Daddy?? She looked right at me with all of the seriousness and intent she could muster: ?Because Mommy says that when you are up there on the stage with the microphone you are talking to God. How come you are the only one who gets to talk to God? I want to talk to God, too! It?s not fair!!: I smiled to myself, and I felt a little cringe well up inside me. I could predict where this was heading. ?Well, CJ, everyone can talk with God, not just me.? ?But Daddy, I tried to, but I just don?t hear God.? ?Well, maybe you need to listen a little bit more carefully,? I said. And then, in my zeal to make my point, I ventured into ?uncharted territory? ...even for a sophisticated five-year-old: ?Because, after all,? I continued, ?God is every?where, and God can hear everyone.? She looked at me in utter disbelief. ?Daddy, now you know that can?t be true. God doesn?t have a motorcycle or a car, so He can?t be everywhere!? I knew I had lost. Time to change the subject! I knew that my own daughter had caused me to rethink what we adults take for granted: namely, where is God, and how does one hear God? Our tradition teaches us that God is indeed everywhere. I think one Rabbi said it best when he stated, ?God is wherever we let Him in.? The corollary to this is ?There is no room for God in one who is full is him/herself?. Whereve people strive for Godliness, there is God. (cont. on page 3) TOT SHABB AT Mark your calendars now for the ne?^B Tot Shabbat. This is a special Shabba^^ morning program designed for children 2- 6 years of age and their brother and sis?ters. Rabbi Akselrad conducts a service, especially abbreviated, for younger chil?dren. Perhaps by quieting the static that so often fills our lives. It is no wonder, but an object lesson in spiritual counseling to note that the prophets of old frequently heard God, not in the bustling cities, but in the stark desert. Far from distractions, far from everyday concerns, the prophets heard that still, small Voice speak. All of this philosophizing would be lost on a five-year-old, of course. Or would it? We talked a little bit more. I tried to answer her questions the best I could, like any parent. And then it was time for me to say goodnight. My little girl looked up at me one more time before she fell asleep. Tired, but still able to speak, she said, ?OK, Daddy, tomorrow I?ll try to listen a little bit better. Maybe then I?ll hear God.? With that, my little angel fell fast asleep. B'shalom, Sanford D. Akselrad Rabbi ?m m h Congregation Ner Tamid President's Message Shalom. I?ll start by thanking some very special people for their dedication to Temple improvement. In the foyer we now have a beautiful new stained glass ?Star of David? window, thanks to the kindness and generosity of the Sternberg family. The two windows will bring continual pleasure to all who view them. In the office, the staff is enjoying new furniture donated graciously by the Worth family. Quite a face lift for our facility! New, inside and out!! Thank you for your caring thoughtfulness. Last month I read an article by Kent E. Schiner in the B?nai B?rith magazine, and I?d like to quote a bit of it. I hope Mr. Schiner doesn?t mind the plagiarism. The article is titled, Because Being Jewish Matters. It begins by mentioning the overt acts of anti-Semitism that are common in Eastern Europe and the provinces once called the Soviet Union. ?However, in the United States, Jews face more inconspicuous, yet more potent challenges. Apathy and assimilation are threatening to steal our future; they are thinning our numbers and eroding our ranks...We know from experience that unless our children have the opportunity to learn about their history as Jews, understand Jewish values and ideals, chances are that part of their lives will disappear by default. Many families have abdicated the responsibility of raising their youngsters as Jews...Today most people under 50 have no memories of the immigrant experience or of family members or relatives who were lost in the Holocaust. To them, these events are just paragraphs in a history book. The memories are drained of emotion. Many children reach adulthood without any sense of personal involvement with Judaism, they have no Jewish emotional core. The final result is that they drift away from the Jewish life and from their Jewishness.? Strong stuff - but increasingly apparent in our society. Those of you who watch the ?McNeil-Lehrer News Hour? on PBS saw the program which spoke of the problem of assimilation. Jews are too good to lose, and we all must do our part to insure our survival. We must support Jewish organizations and Temples, and we must encourage our children to do the same. We must participate, be involved, be counted. The Jewish contribution to our world is much larger than our numbers. BEING JEWISH DOES MATTER!!!! See you at Temple, Cal Paae 3 Congregation Ner Tamid (r Social Action The Social Action Committee continues to be active at Congregation Ner Tamid. Thank you to all of the Congregants who donated clothing to make our clothing drive for the Domestic Crisis Shelter so successful. We were able to provide lots of warm clothes for the women and children of the shelter. They are very grateful for your generosity. Ner Tamid has extended a special membership to Russian Emigre?s Yefim and Hannah Schneider, and their family. We are helping to make their transition to life in Las Vegas a little easier. For the third consecutive February we are repeating our collection of ?hotel size? shampoos and soaps, towels, etc. The recipient this year will be Shadetree, a shelter for women and children. Sondra Schwartz, one of our congregants, is a volunteer there. She has told us that the women are also in need of clothing, especially undergarments. In March we will co-sponsor a blood drive with the Brotherhood. The date for this event is March 22nd, the day of the Purim Carnival. The Bloodmobile will be in the Temple parking lot from noon until 1:30 p.m. The donation of blood is a mitzvah of the highest order. Several other projects are in the planning stages. We will keep the Congregation informed of our progress. The next meeting will be held on Sunday morning, January 26th at 10:00 a.m. If you have an interest in participating, please call Eileen Kollins. We would be happy to add you to our committee. Pace 7 Congregation Ner Tamid Now that the second semester of | Religious School is in full swing, we j are gearing up for several fundraisers, j Since it is so difficult for many people | to ?find? Passover candy in Las Vegas, the Religious School will be selling them. The students have already brought home the forms. If you do not ] know a student, but would like to purchase some of these delicious Barton???s treats, simply stop in the Religious School office any Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday. By now everyone should be aware of our exciting Purim Carnival on Sun?day, March 22nd, from 11:30 until 2:00. In conjunction with our Carni?val, the Religious School will be doing a Pizza Fundraiser. All grades will be selling them by taking orders in ad?vance. The students in grades 4-6 will actually be making them The class selling the most pizzas in grades K-3 will have an ice cream party. Any student in grades 4-6 who sells seven pizzas or more will be able to make their own ?Dream Pizza?. What a fun way to raise money! Two of our goals for these fundraisers are to complete the win?dow coverings for the last five class?rooms still in need of them; and to buy a much needed laminator for the school. Please help support our events, the school and the children are count?ing on you. Jeanne Schomaker Preschool News After winter break, school re?sumed on January 6th. The children are happy to be back, and we are happy to have them back. We are very busy with the older children trying to ready them for kindergarten. Andrea has done a great job so far. She will be evaluating their knowledge of letters, numbers up to 20, writing their names, and a few more basic skills before the semester is over. We made trees to take home for the celebration of Tu B/Shevat, the New Year of Trees. We also made Tu B?Shevat playing cards to take home. The children can play ?Go Fish? and ?Memory? while learning about trees! Until next month! Julie & Andrea V:.....................................- D [? TjMffl? NTTY During the months of December and January NTTY participated in many exciting events, aside from the many informative programs conducted by our vice-president, Melissa Kaufman. From December 12-16, the Winter Conclave was held in Scottsdale, AZ. Hosted by TSTY. This fun filled weekend was an experience NTTY will never forget. The theme of Conclave was ?A1 Sh?loshah D?varim: ha Torah, V?al Ha Avodah, V?al G?milut Chasadim?, (on these three things the world stands: the Torah, Temple service, and acts of loving kindness). Most of the programming was based on the themes: Our Judaism and Current Events. The mixers done throughout the weekend helped bring members of all different youth groups together. By the end everyone had at least a few new friends, and many wonderful memories. January was also a busy month. On the 11th, NTTY had the opportunity to have two members of the SWFTY board participate in our youth group. They flew down to Las Vegas to see NTTY, how it works, and what an awesome youth group it is. We surprised them with a mystery social. The overall reaction to the evening was great, and hopefully they will come back to visit again, soon. A special thanks goes out to our Temple members, who will be helping so many children by donating to Mitzvah Corps during NTTY?s 7th annual Phone- a-Thon. You are making a significant difference in their lives! It is still not too late to donate to Mitzvah Corps! If you are interested, but you aren?t sure what it is, call Alan Hirsh at 458-8066. We will send you information immediately! The next SWFTY event, Kallah, will take place in the beautiful city of Santa Fe, from February 13th through 16th.
