StThomas,Ne^§j.cia,May 1" th. XJ Mrs Sadie is.George Los Angels, ral. Dear Madam:- Last eayening I wrote you hurridley, enclosing an un-indorsecl check from the Amex-ican China Company,hy neeves,as manager, so that you could finde out what you could concerning them thro, pretending to present the check for payment. You see I dont really know that they will come hack with the order for the magnesite, and must not cash the check untill | finde out.See.I could noi afford to accept an order for a car of clay, and fill i hy sending a car of magnesite, for they are two seperate and distinct things, and 1 could easily get in had,if theyp were trying a trick,! dont think they are,and believe they are wanting the material in good faith, wake their money for something 1 could not sujjply is the railroad, come hack after me for the fright ie ground xt was for the freight, sut I dont want to and have t hen on the car, which reeves could refuse to receive on not what he ordered ,You see they could then sell 11 and of course it would not bring anything much, simpley go for wha i reeves or some of the hunch might care to give for it,and the company would hold me for the balance of the freight,at the same time i would he owing the hoys here for the bawling, and etc. I think they will come hack with w proper order, and probabley mean business,Lut I must know.Dident have time to explain yester day.Let me know what you finde out J U .o U from them again in a as quiekley or two* you can, because I expect to heaj ciny Enclosed herewith 1 enclose the rather lengthy statement I promised,Pexdiaps it will not interest you at all,hut I did not know hut that you might have some friends or acquaintances who have not exercised their land rights,to whome the proposition might appeal. And if so,you could let me know and get your Five Per cent commission on the deal, that is get it Mien I have the work completed, and can ake out some money that will he left on deposit.Owing to the peculiarity of the deal I could not work it out clifferentley, for people ordinarily will not pay any of their money as commissions, until the whole scheen has materalised. Nov; about Desert entries.Of course a person is supposed notjb to enter land only for themselves^and they have to swear that tfyey are entrying the land^for their own use and henifit, hut if one makes an entry and then mortgages half or three fourths of it to some one for money to secure a water right,or for equipment,it is allright., with the land department, and will he approved,if any one_tries-torn make trouble out of it,by carrying it up to the Federal L and O^fie. I have a letter on file to that effect direct from the Federal Ladd Office in Washington, and can produce same if any of your parties come on and desire to see it. My Thought in all of this is,that if you have not esercisecl pour right to take land, why not come on and enter one hundred and sixty acres,or possibley fijfcghty acres, nave from one to three of your nartioc go xn with you and put up all of the money^ ,, anntdl BY°u PusHe your“ r1i gIht HtIo 1 to make the entry, letting the same go in as against their money,See/ only clont make it widley public, just as between your self* and the parties who might go in with you* If* you should take say an eighty acre tract, give three other parties a mortage on three fourths of it after they had put up four forths of the money, see,as against the fourth they would put up for you give then value received by useing your right to take land,|hat would leave you with a twenty you did not reddem the mortgage you gawe you give the mortgage for such a high acre tract, each, that is j them on their twenty, anc sum that you would never redeem it,and !just as soon as your final proof was in,3/ou could then legally give them the deed for settlemt of the debt. But in doing any thing of that kinde, you should have 1 the mortgage make it clear, that all of your property ,except the || said land, was exempt from the said mortgage, and that it your other property could never be taken or levied upon for the debt.'lhen you would be safe. I have some vegas parties and others interested and think the l2|nd will soon be gon,but if you care to bother and finde you or some of your parties desire to come on,wire me to that effect,anc\ if any is left will notify you,and hold the property ,that is wiBbff old the information untill you come so that others could not take it.There are four forties, mostley all nice land, lying just south of an against the land I have mortgaged and am trying to mortgage to you. Bhat would be a nice holding,it is farley close in to thesf salt and some day might be valuable on that account,If you had three parties who desired a forty each, ana you made the entry, the three could possibley be made to dig up the qsAOG0,br f e a c h , y o u exercmse your entry and come out of it with a forty.See. The papers can all be fixed and be safe. I'am sure that if IjS can get in this monejr | can finish the canal, and than it is a vain* able holding, and any one who gets a forty for the above price will have a mighty good bargain.I think you will get enough out #fthe statement to understand the general plan.Take the matter up with Ju dge Toland or soineother attorney,if you need such assistance anc have then; sho'/me up.and the rascality I am attempting. As stated | think you it.and as I do not eaven get will have to take pritty speedy action if you get any of shown in the statement you put your monry in the bank and get it only for work, and if enough doesnt come in I dont to work for it,you will take it back out of the bank. Have so little time to write I scarcley know What sorl jumble I am makeing. You see sitting up with sick folks dosent help one out with thei regular affares. of Harry is still improveing, kut very week. anything has come up so that it isent convenient to send me the money foraerley mentioned, on the little land mortgageing projbs-ition, please advise, and | will arrange to get it elswher, for I must have some little matters taken care of in the near future. Excuse haste, hopeing to hear from you soon I remain / Very tuly yours „B8 ?
