Friday, May 26th Services conducted by Rabbi Akselrad Oneg sponsored by Sisterhood 8:00 P.M Rabbi?s Message We remember. For too many the images are still like yesterday. The death, destruction, and demise of our people under Nazi rule comes flooding back like spectres in the night. For too many, however, these spectres have become but faded images of a bygone past. For those born after the Flolocaust understanding is difficult and memory is the by-product of stories past down by grand?parents, parents, media presentations and books. So how can we remember, really remember those who died, the martyrs of our people? Through the power of community we remember. The Holocaust taught us that each one of our lives is inextricably intertwined with one another. Through the power of prayer on Yom Hashoah we will gather togetheryoung and old to share with each other the power of memory. What will we pray for? That such an atrocity shall never affect any people ever again. That the martyrs of our people shall not have died in vain because we shall affirm our tradition by deed as well as by prayer. That we shall remember, and teach our children that they too shall remember and never ever forget... one people... one destiny... one collective prayer... of hope. B' Shalom, Sanford D. Akselrad RabbiYom Hashoah at Temple Beth Shalom May 2nd On May 2nd at 7:30 P.M. at Temple Beth Shalom, there will be a community wide obser?vance for Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Memorial Day). All five Congregations as well as the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas are sponsors. This year?s speaker is Irene Opdyke, a heroine of the Holocaust who literally risked her life to save the lives of hundreds of Jewish children. Not of our faith, Ms. Opdyke is truly a ?righteous gentile? devoting her life to fighting bigotry and racism. Of special note at this year?s service will be memorialization not only of the six million Jews who died during the Holocaust, but of the five million non-Jews who died due to Hitler?s barbarism. Members of the Jewish and non-Jewish clergy will be participating. The Service has been written and edited by Rabbi Sanford Akselrad and Can?tor Simon Bergman. ------?-"YOM HASHOAH"---------- Let Us Join together for a Community-wide Memorial Service to Commemorate the Holocaust REMEMBER THE 6,000,000! Hopefully, Danny will make it to Washington, D.C. in July. Congratulations to Jackie Mutnick for receiving straight A's for the 3rd time at Woodbury Jr. High. Jackie, who turned 14, is also a member of the jazz and concert band at the school. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Mutnick. A special thank you to Bella Schwartz, our Cantorial Soloist and Hallee Wash, our Choir Director, who led us in song and helped create a very festive atmosphere. (Pictured below are some of the highlights of the affair.) YOUTH CHOIR ?Sing Unto God? The Congregation NerTamid Youth Choir, under the^k direction of Rochelle David will be making two debufl^P public appearances during the month of May. The Choir's first appearance will be on "The Gail & Harvey Allen Show" Radio Station KROL Sunday, May 7the 9:00 P.M. They will be performing as part of the station's pro?gram honoring Israel's 41st Birthday. Their second appearance will be on May 14th at the Inter-Expo Center for the Israeli Independence Day Celebration. At this time, our Choir will be performing for the entire Las Vegas Jewish community. During this past year, our students have been par?ticipating in Friday night services, performing on the evenings that the Religious School holds its Shabbat Family dinners. The Religious School academic year is coming to a close. Looking back over this years events is best described by the words of the commercial: "...we've come a long way, Baby!" We anticipated an enrollment of fifty students; we now have over one hundred students. We added a classroom, two teachers, a Youth Choir Director, and a kitchen. Each class ex?perienced having its own Shabbat Dinner; the children in first and second grades were consecrated; we expressed ourselves in yam, macaroni, felt, plaster and stained glass. Our Hebrew program was extended down to the first grade and our music teacher, ALAN HIRSH, guitar slung over shoulder, did weekly pilgrimages to each class, individualizing his teaching. We had a Purim play, a mock Israeli trip and our own ?cruise? on Noah's Ark. We conducted two separate Passover Seders, led by the Rabbi. And still, yet to come, in the month of May, will be our par?ticipation in the community-wide celebration of Israeli In?dependence Day. Our students will march in the Walk-a-thon *and have their art work displayed. Our Youth Choir will make its first community appearance in honor of Israel's 41st An?niversary. To close our school year, we will hold our second annual Macabbia and picnic. Our school picnic for parents, teachers and students will be held on Sunday, May 21st. It will begin at noon, ending both our day and our year of Religious School with games, fun and food, all organized and prepared by N.T.T.Y., our Youth Group, and under the direction of ALAN HIRSH, who is also our Youth Group Advisor. Next year, even bigger plans! Our Hebrew department will be extended to a two day a week program for Bet and Gimmel levels and our children will begin their Hebrew studies in the Religious School from the day that they enter?in kindergarten. We will be adding a course in "gastronomic Judaism", whereby our students will come to experience preparation of our old traditional foods. The Youth Choir will be participating in services throughout the year, performing for each Class Shabbat Dinner Service. And, finally, we are an?ticipating adding one more classroom and several more teachers to our staff. At this time, I wish to add a personal "thank you". Whatever our successes were this past year and whatever ex?citement we created for our children was due to all the wonderful people who work with and for the school. My most sincere appreciation to RITA MOSES, our Executive Director, who co-administrates the Religious School: my gratitude to NORMA ABRGEL, the Rabbi's Secretary, who patiently types all that flows out of the school office; I give my respect to our teachers who create all our learning excitement, week after week, putting in hours (of shopping) and lesson preparations; a big "thanks, guy? to the school aides who man the office on Sundays and do whatever, whenever and then some. Without MARILYN GLOVINSKY, our Vice President of Education, our Room Parent Program and Shabbat Dinners would not have been the success that they were. And a very deep appreciation to RABBI AKSELRAD whose knowledge, wisdom and patience guided me through this first year. Finally, thank you, Parents, for your help and cooperation in all our programs. We all recognize that it takes more than "car pool" to bring a Jewish education to our children... and if you think we asked a lot from you this year ? just wait until you see what we have in store for you in 5750! Sandy Cohen PrincipalMay 14th Hebrew School will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.; and Religious School will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Parents are asked to pick children up promptly and to attend Israel Independence Day fair and Walk-a- thon at Inter-Expo Center. May 21 ? Last Day of Religious School Hebrew School will be from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Religious School will begin at 11:00 a.m. to be followed by a Maccabbia (athletic games), food and fun at Noon. Parents are invited.
