Preschool D ire cto r Congregation Ner Tamid Rabbi?s Message Over the next few weeks we will be observing two very important Jewish holidays, Passover and Yom Hashoah. Though vastly different in tone and meaning, nevertheless, there is a common thread of meaning that we must not forget. Passover recalls the story of the Exodus and of how our people were freed from slavery. Looking closer, however, Passover also points to a time in which the Jews lived in Egypt as a protected and flourishing community, having been brought there as a kindness to Joseph who saved Egypt from starvation. Years later, this secure Jewish community was enslaved because a new Pharaoh felt that the Jews had dual loyalty. Recalling the xenophobic words of Pharaoh as stated in the book of Exodus: ?Behold, the people of the children of Israel are too many and too mighty for us; come, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there befalleth us any war, they also join themselves unto our enemies, and fight against us...? This fear was one cause that led to Jewish enslavement. The Holocaust likewise recalls a time in this century where one of the most secure Jewish communities in the world was enslaved and brutalized almost to the point of extinction. We learned quite painfully that our position in even the most secure environ?ments can become tenuous very quickly. We who live in America should never forget that lesson. While we mustn?t live in fear, we should live with our eyes open. Most pointedly, this election year has wrought some troubling events. David Duke and Patrick Buchanan have both come out with statements that, only a few years ago, would have scandalized them out of any election. It was Buchanan, for example, who wrote that though Hitler was a genocidal killer, he was nonetheless, ?a political organizer of the first rank...a man of extraordinary gifts,...and elements of genius.? But most shocking of all has been Buchanan?s tendency to dismiss the Holocaust and to insinuate that the Jewish community and survivors in general have embellished their stories and may be ?engaging in group fantasies of martyrdom and heroics.? We are far away from a ?Holocaust? in this country. But the lessons of Passover and Yom Hashoah are that we must always keep a vigilant eye towards our rights. We must do all that we can to speak up and let others know that anti-semitism, racism or bigotry of any kind can not be tolerated, whether it be at work, school, or as a basis for an election campaign. Anything less would be to ignore the hard learned lessons of the past. B?shalom. Sanford D. Akselrad Rabbi 1____ ' . Family Shabbat Service May 15 th Honoring the Religious School Staff Service 7:30 p.m. Please join Rabbi Akselrad and the Jr. Choir for a warm Family Shabbat experience. Please note this date on your calendar so that you can join us in worship Ladino... The ?Other? Yiddish On Friday evening, April 24th, the Congregation Ner Tamid Adult Choir, directed by Martha Olson, will present the "LADINO SABBATH SERVICE". Ladino is the language of the Sephardic Jews who were driven out of Spain in 1492. It is a combination of Castilian interspersed with Hebrew. It is the language of the Jews of Spain much as Yiddish is a language of the Jews of eastern Europe. Participating with the Choir will be members of the Valley Voices and Cantorial Soloist, Bella Feldman. The music of the Ladinos is upbeat and full of zest, reflecting the influence of Spanish culture on the Jewish musical tradition. This service will pay homage to what was once the most influential Jewish community in the world. The service was first published in 1990 by Cantor Jason Norman Bauch. This is the premier Las Vegas performance of this exciting work. Rabbi Sanford^^ Akselrad will conduct this special Sabbath Service beginning at 8:00 p.m. Th^B* entire community is invited to join us for this exciting service. Page 2 Congregation Ner Tamid TOT SHABBAT Mark your calendars now for the next Tot Shabbat. This is a special Shabbat morning program designed for children 2-6 years of age and their brother and sisters. Rabbi Akselrad conducts a service, especially abbreviated, for younger chil?dren. Following services, the children will participate in an exciting arts and crafts project, followed by lunch to complete the fun-filled morning. Special thanks to Chairperson Bette Stahl and her Committee for doing such an outstanding job! Place: Temple Sanctuary Time: 10:00 a.m. Date: May 9,1992 YES WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE TOT SHABBAT PROGRAMS ? NAME: ________________________________________________________________. ? ADDRESS: PHONE: CHILD?S NAME: I WE PLAN TO ATTEND MAY 9TH:_______________________________. I I____________________________________________________________I RSVP to Temple office at 733-6292 Bar Mitzvah My name is Brian Rosenfeld. I was born in Ponca City, Oklahoma and lived in Texas and California before moving to Las Vegas four years a go. I?m a 7th grader at John?son Junior High. When I am not in school or studying for my Bar Mitzvah, I enjoy rollerblading, basketball and computer games. My parents, Wendy and Jeff Rosenfeld, and I would like to invite you to my Bar Mitzvah on April 3rd at 8 p.m. President?s Message Every time I come to Temple I smile and feel so good. The front of our building is beautiful. We need to recognize the Beautification Committee for their dedication in coming up with a plan and following it to completion. I hope I don?t forget anyone: Chairperson Yvonne Gordon, Committee members Joni Akselrad, Jan Cobb, Christi Cleek Molasky, Jackie McRitchie, and Howard Perlman - thank you all for adding such pleasant?ness to Congregation Ner Tamid. Those of you who haven?t seen the completed front are in for a treat! Others who need to be recognized by all of us who have enjoyed the activities brought about by hard work are the Sisterhood, Brotherhood, Golden Chai, Religious School, Preschool and general committee members. These people keep on working and planning. Things happen and we partake and we often do not stop to say ?thanks?. Thank you Mary Fox and Jack Bulavsky and their committee for another fun Game Night. Thanks to the great office staff who manage day in and day out - often picking up the pieces! As you can tell, I feel good about Congregation Ner Tamid. This is a very busy month and it seems everyone is in on it. The Temple is sponsoring the annual Passover Seder at the Desert Inn Country Club on April 17. It should be good as the food and service for other events I?ve attended have been quite good. Make your reservation early as space is limited. Also don?t forget the Goods ?N Services Auction on May 9. Lois Doctors and Dyane Kohnen would love to hear from you if you have something to donate or some contact for a donation. Brotherhood is very active and planning several activities for April. On April 5, along with Golden Chai, they are sponsoring the David Syme Concert - is it humorous music, or music with humor? Watch the final basketball game of the college season with Brotherhood on Monday evening, April 6. Sounds like a good way to enjoy the Final Four. Last activity of the month, but certainly not the least, is Sisterhood?s Progressive Dinner. It?s always fun and sometimes an adventure. We look forward to seeing you there or wherever it is. It amazes me that there is so much going on, and this is a reflection of the many groups with diverse interests that we have in our Congregational family. Get involved - you 11 feel good and we will welcome your participation. I hope to see all of you at Temple or at least at some activity. Shalom, Cal Bar Mitzvah Hi, I?m Danny Chenin. I am in the 7th Grade at Cannon Jr. High, and I play the trum?pet in the band. My talents and interests include art; build?ing; drawing; R.C. boats, cars and airplanes. Besides all my interests and hobbies I have two dogs, three cats and sixteen gerbils - that keeps me busy. I am looking forward to my Bar Mitzvah, and I have en?joyed learning Hebrew with Melissa Glovinsky, and learn?ing about my Jewish religion, culture and traditions with the Rabbi and Congregation Ner Tamid. I hope that the entire Con?gregation will join me, my fam?ily and friends for services, on April 10,1992, when I am called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah. Eileen Kollins Social Action Committee Chairperson Art & Beautification LANDSCAPING MIRACLE Doesn?t the front landscaping look terrific?! After many months, and many meetings, the results of the work of CNT?s Art and Beautification Committee have begun to show. Plans have been made for a new look inside also. Furniture is on order for the lobby, and some painting and general ?cleaning up? is still to be done. Our Congregation thanks the continuing generosity of the M.B. Dalitz Foundation, as well as an anonymous donor who defrayed a large portion of the cost of the renovations. Thanks also goes to the hard-working members of the Art and Beautifica?tion Committee: Joni Akselrad, Jan Cobb, Yvonne Gordon, Jackie McRitchie, Christi Cleek Molasky and Howard Pearlman. In order to finish our lobby, the Committee is considering commissioning a work of art for the curved brick wall. If you are interested in having work considered, please submit sketches, size specifications and aproximate cost to Yvonne Gordon, 40 Congressional Ct., Las Vegas, 89113, by April 30th. Invest in Israel?s Future... And Yours Jerusalem and Zion have been one since David conquered the hill city around 1000 B.C.E., and the city?s hold on Jewish veneration has only deepened with the passage of three mil?lennia. ?Jerusalem 25? is the theme of the 1992 Israel Bonds synagogue campaign, designed to help Israel resettle this his?toric influx of new citizens. Israel?s government has an?nounced that all 1992 Israel Bonds proceeds will be utilized exclusively to help provide housing and jobs for new immi grants. As we prepare to gather at the Passover table and cel ebrate the festival of freedom, Israel Bonds?Jerusalem 25" campaign is a worthy channel for our efforts in behalf of Jews who, in the face of impossible odds, never forgot their link to Jerusalem. We'll see you at theGoods & Services Auction... May 9th ANNUAL MEETING The Annual Meeting and Election has been set for Sun?day, June 6 at 5:00 p.m. There will be three Trustee openings on the Board. Jewish Lecture Series The last program in the Jewish Lecture Series will be Rabbi Laura Geller speaking on ?The Role of Jewish Women Throughout The Ages?. Rabbi Geller is currently serving as the Executive Director of the American Jewish Congress, Pacific Southwest Region. She served as Hillel Director at USC for fourteen years, and has been active in a variety of Jewish community concerns and pub?lications. Rabbi Geller has spe?cial interest in Israel. One of the first and most well-known women rabbis, she has written on a variety of topics, often re?lating to sexism and religion. Not just for women, this pre?sentation will be educational, informative and include some fascinating revelations. Be sure not to miss this last speaker of the 1992 series. Congregation Ner Tamid Sunday, April 5,1992 - 7:00 P.M. David Syme is know as one of the music world?s most gifted pianists. He has appeared with major symphony orchestras throughout Europe and the Americas. Recognized as a ge?nius before he had reached his teens, he studied the classics with Mischa Kottler and Julius Chajes. He also worked with Ozan Marsh at the University of Arizona and with Jorge Bolet at Indiana University. He is a graduate of the Julliard School of Music. Syme comes from a musical family. His father used to be a cantor and is currently the Rabbi at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michi?gan, near Detroit. His mother is a pianist. His late brother was a gifted violinist and flutist. Syme and his wife reside in West Bloomfield. He first began playing the piano at age three and was self taught through the age o thirteen. At fourteen he started formal training and practiced 10 hours a day, non-stop Even today his practicing is extensive. His talents go beyond the classics. While living in Arizona in the 1960?s he played in a rock band, and credits that experience with freeing him from what he felt a the time was the confinement of ?a prison of notes?. It taught him not to be so categorical. While with the rock band he recorded the sound track for a movie. He is well known to radio audiences around the country for his call-in show, aired on radio stations coast to coast including the highest rated station in the country, KABC, in Los Angeles. In his shows, Syme, working from his piano in his home, takes requests from the listeners and plays the songs off the top of his head, be they classical pieces, popular music, folk music, or even rock tunes. His ability to remember and repeat music has been well documented. ?Jewish Roots and the Classics? is an entertaining and informative lecture perfor?mance where Syme explores the interrelationship between Jewish folk music and classical music. You?ll hear how Franz Liszt?s fascination with cantorial music may have been a major inspiration for his Hungarian Rhapsodies; how Mendelssohn turned his back on Judaism in order to fit in gracefully with the 19th century German community, and why Jews have excelled mainly as performers rather than composers of classical music. This program is punctuated with little kown and often amusing facts about the fives of famous musicians. This 90 minute program will include traditional Jewish songs as well as works of Liszt, Mozart, Imbers, Smetena, Copeland, Bernstein and complete reditions of Gershwin?s ?Rhapsody in Blue? and Menderssohns ?Ronda Capriccioso?. Tickets are $7.50 for general admission and $5.00 for seniors and students. Tickets are available at the Temple office (9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.). For further information please contact Debbie Stadt at the Temple office at 733-6292.
