The Reform Synagogue of Las Vegas 2761 Emerson Avenue, Las Vegas, Nevada 89121 Ruth Fite, Executive Director Sandra Cohen, School Principal Terri Herman, Bulletin Editor January 1990 Tevet - Shevat Sanford D. Akselrad, Rabbi Eileen Kollins, President SCHEDULE OF SERVICES Friday January 5,1990 Conducted by Rabbi Akselrad Friday January 12,1990 Conducted by Leo Wilner Friday January 19,1990 Conducted by Rabbi Akselrad Friday January 26,1990 Conducted by Rabbi Akselrad Oneg sponsored by 3rd Grade Class Rabbi's Message ?THE CHALLENGES WE FACE? With the new year comes new challenges for our Congregation. We have grown in numbers and we have grown in programs. Now we face the challenge of integrating our new members into our Congregation. This is not a challenge unique to our Temple; it occurs in every organization. What is particularly unique about our Temple is that so many of our members are new. Almost two thirds of our membership have been with our Congregation less than two years! To members new and old, I present this challenge. Become an involved part of our Temple family. Introduce yourselves to unfamiliar faces at Shabbat Services. Take part in various committees to plan for our Temple?s future. Become active in our auxiliaries - Sisterhood, Brotherhood, and Golden Chai. And participation in the programs our Temple has to offer. Don?t wait to be asked. But become a member who asks another to become involved as well. This January welcomes new leadership to our Temple Board. For the past three years we have been led under the able direction of Ken Schnitzer. His devotion, commitment and concern for the Temple have been instrumental in our Temple?s growth. As the reigns of leadership are transferred to a new board under the able direction of Eileen Kollins, I know that we can expect the same kind of dedication and love. The mantle of leadership has indeed been passed. Let all of us working together come to meet the challenge. B?shalom, Sanford D. FIRST WOMAN PRESIDENT OF CONGREGATION NER TAMID Eileen Kollins became the first woman to head the Board of Direc?tors of Congregation Ner Tamid when she was elected at the Annual Meet?ing on December 3rd. Mrs. Kollins was Ner Tamid?s ?Congregant of the Year? in 1988. She has been principal of the Relig?ious School and during times when the congregation was without a Rabbi, led Sabaath services. On accepting the office, Eileen stated that she was sure the new offi?cers and board of directors would strive to continue the growth of the Temple and to provide more services to the congregants. She said, ?In the past two years we have grown from about 80 families to more than 300. It is incumbent on all of us to strengthen our present programs and bring more facets of our religion to^ Southern Nevada.? PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE A new year, a new Board, a new beginning. It is with a sense of challenge and excitement that we approach 1990 with both new and ex?perienced Board members. We know that the previous Board led so well by Ken Schnitzer, has set an excellent example by their diligence and dedication. It is a tough act to follow. Our goals are many and diverse. There will be a need for more classrooms and of course, our future dream of a ?real? sanctuary. Our religious and social programming will continue to increase and our Outreach program is off to a good start. The School continues to grow and we are hoping for an expanded and enriched Hebrew program next year. Another goal is to promote tikun olam. to improve the world by a variety of mitzvah projects throughout the year. Feel free to contact any Board with your input, with suggestions or criticisms, keeping in mind that there is not always an easy answer to each problem, but certainly we can do our best to be responsive to your wants and needs. I am looking forward to seeing each of you throughout the year. Best wishes to all of our Temple members and their families for happiness and good health in 1990. Eileen Kollins Page 2 Congregation Ner Tamid TOT SHABBAT SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY MTH Mark your calendars now for February 24th as we continue our success?ful program once again this year. This program is chaired by Joni Akselrad and sponsored by Sisterhood. It is open to the entire community but reservations are a must. GRACE ENTRANCE NO SERVICES" We are sure that you have no?ticed the construction in front of the entrance to the Temple. Very shortly we will have a beautiful new monu?ment donated by Eugene R. Warner. Mr. Warner has been a continuing benefactor of the Temple. He pre?viously donated funds to build our library. His continued support and generosity are greatly appreciated. The top will be graced with a Ner Tamid lighting the way for all who ^nter. Look for more information in "our next issue about the dedication. Our Temple has experienced rapid growth in the past two years. We want to maintain our friendly, warm atmosphere, but also would like to have the dignity and respect befitting a religious institution when our congregants come to pray. Numerous comments have been made about appropriate attire for Shabbat and High Holiday services. A simplified dress code would be as follows: 1. If you will be participating in the service, it is requested that men wear ties along with a sport jacket or suit and that women wear dresses or skirts. 2. Similar or slightly more casual attire is desirable for attendance at services. 3. No bluejeans, t-shirts, sandals, sweatsuits or tennis shoes are considered appropriate during any religious service. Thank you for your cooperation. Let us take as much pride in our per?sonal appearance as we do in our Temple?s appearance.
