RABBI S MESSAGE Due to his vacation the Rabbi?s column will appear next month. It is 103 degrees outside and the winds are reportedly gusting from 20-35 miles per hour from the Southwest. I have missed my deadline for this article. During the past week I have attended at least six Sanctuary Campaign meetings as well as numerous other temple meetings and events. My law partners are expressing shock at seeing me in my office (and thinking I am working on ? billable? matters and not realizing I am dictating this article). Prior to accepting the nomination for presidency of the Congregation, Eileen Kollins promised me that if I asked she would write a guest column. Well, that is exactly what I want her to do; but she is on vacation. Well, given my options and reminding myself that I have diligently met all of my previous deadlines to date and actually have written each and every one of my columns to-date, I am most deserving of a vacation. I will write something more insightful next month. Jerry Gordon P.S. Remember to buy your July 4th fireworks from the Brotherhood at their stand located at Flamingo and Pecos and please respond generously to Cal Lewis and Ron Worth?s Kol Nidre Appeal. ISRAEL BONDS: A HIGH HOLIDAY TRADITION The High Holiday are a time for introspection and contemplation, an opportunity to reflect on both the past and the future. A significant means of bringing the past, present and future together as one, is through investment in securities issued by State of Israel Bonds. Israel Bonds represents a simultaneous investment in both our heritage and our future. The objective of the Israel Bonds program is to secure long-term investment capital for infusion into Israel?s economy. Since Israel Bonds was created in 1951, more than $13 billion in loan proceeds have helped build Israel essential infrastructure: highways and harbors, communication and transportation systems, new towns and new sources of energy. For example, 1955 Bonds proceeds helped finance the construction of the National Water Carrier, a project that allowed Israel to become agriculturally independent. More recently, Israel Bonds loan capital has supported the absorption of vast numbers of Jews immigrating to Israel from the former Soviet Union, Ethiopia and elsewhere, by creating housing and employment opportunities for them. The theme for this years? State of Israel Bond?s campaign is Shomrei Shalom - Guardians of Peace. This High Holy Day season, by making an investment in Israel?s future, each person is, in effect becoming a guardian of the peace we all wish for Israel. An investment in Israel Bonds, not only benefits Israel, but with attractive rates of interest, ranging from 4%-7.2%, and early redemption privileges as short as 3 years, Israel Bonds are a stable, diversifying asset which benefits any investment portfolio: personal, retirement or business. For more information on how you can become a ?Guardian of Peace? during this High Holiday season, call the Israel Bonds? office at 602-264-2410 or 1-800-229-4324. At most Friday night services, congregants can participate in a special way by accepting honors to be proud of, such as lighting the Shabbat candles, opening and closing the doors of the Sacred Ark, dressing and undressing the Torah, and to have the Aliyah and bless the Torah. If any congregant wishes to have such honors, contact Ronae Fink at 733-6292. If you are unfamiliar with the Hebrew prayers, assistance is available. Contact Ronae and she will be pleased to help teach you all the appropriate blessings. Participate in Shabbat Services. The addition of a new Sanctuary and new class rooms as well as new offices for the Rabbi and other staff clearly indicates a need for all the temple membership to participate financially to the best of their ability. Department of Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic 1701 West Charleston Blvd. Las Vegas, NV 89102 In the next several weeks you will be asked to make a pledge for the new sanctuary. In addition, your Board of Trustees will be asking you to participate in the annual Kol Nidre Appeal. While the sanctuary commitment is long-term, over a five year period, the Kol Nidre monies are raised to offset the cost of operating the temple on a day-to-day basis. Your gift, which in the past has accounted for 20% of the temple?s budget, and is used to provide the on-going services that all of us have come to expect. As in the past, there will be a few who will contribute large amounts. However, while these gifts are important, each and every gift is valuable. So look into your hearts (and pocket books) and do what you can so your temple can do what you want. Dear Rabbi Akselrad: Again, I want to thank you most sincerely for your participation in the Dedication of our Meditation Room here at our Medical Center. Please extend to your Cantor, Ms. Bella Feldman, my sincere gratitude. Her participation was appreciated. The ceremony impressed so many people and now it is being used by our patients and staff. Dubbed, ?Thank G-d It?s Shabbat? or ?TGIS? by Rabbi Akselrad, all students who attended Sabbath services on a regular basis throughout the school year were specially recognized by the Congregation and the Rabbi. Although service attendance is welcomed throughout the year, Congregation Ner Tamid began its program in October as a simple way of encouraging students to attend services. Rabbi Akselrad explained the simplicity of the program: ?Each time a student attended services, they would present a card with their name on it to an usher from the Brotherhood. The usher would punch their card and when the card was completed the student would turn it in to me or the religious school principal.? In all, over 2 dozen students completed the program which required as a minimum, monthly service attendance. Fifteen students attended services eigthteen times or more and received the ?grand? prize: A day with Rabbi Akselrad at the MGM Grand Theme Park. One student, Jolie Alhadeff, attended the most and received a brand new annual award, The Shomer Torah Award.? Jolie received a special plaque with her name engraved on it on May 13th and will stand before the Congregation at Kol Nidre holding a Torah. Jolie attends Greenspun Junior High School and is in the 8th A Special Place To Belong JOLIE ALHADEFF WITH HER SHOMER TORAH AWARD Cayttoil It is with much sadness that I announce Lillian Kollar is leaving Congregation Ner Tamid as our accompanist. Lillian has provided our Temple with her expertise in Jewish music over the past two years. I feel very fortunate to have worked with Lillian and will miss her greatly. All of us at CNT wish Lillian the best in her future endeavors. As you may know, Lillian is a piano instructor and we are fortunate that she introduced one of her students to us. I would like to welcome Rhonda Greeson as our new accompanist. Rhonda has been studying piano for over 15 years and is currently finishing her Bachelor?s degree in Music Education at UNLV. Rhonda will begin student teaching in the fall and hopes to get a teaching position with the Clark County School District when she is finished. Adult Choir High Holiday rehearsals are already in progress. We are always looking for new members and I encourage anyone who likes to sing to join us. Rehearsals are on Thursdays from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Singing in the choir is a wonderful way to be involved with the Temple and make new friends. If you have any questions about the choir please call me at the temple. In case you don?t know me, my name is Lindsey Bemay and my Bat Mitzvah is coming up on July 9, 1994. I hope you can all be there to share in my very special day. In my Torah portion, I will talk about dreams. One of my dreams has been to become a Bat Mitzvah. I go to Thurman White Middle School and I am now in the 7th grade. My favorite subjects in school are math and reading. I like reading books by Judy Blume and Christopher Pike. I love to play soccer, rollerblade, listen to music, and to to the movies with my friends. On July 9th, I will become an adult in the eyes of the Jewish faith. I am really looking forward to this, and I know I will do my very best because I have worked long and hard for this day! Hope to see you there. Love, Lindsey Saturday, July 9th 10:00 a.m. ALOHA! My name is Brian Frankl. My Bar Mitzvah will be on Saturday, July 23, 1994. I am thirteen years old. I live in Hawaii on Hickam Air Force Base. I enjoy playing basketball, going to the drive-in and snorkeling. My favorite place to snorkel is Hanauma Bay. I also enjoy reading, swimming, and playing sports during the summer. I play the saxophone at school and I help swimming instructors at a swimming pool during swimming seasons. I have a lot of relatives that are coming from all over the United States., like Cleveland, Florida and California to attend my Bar Mitzvah.. I can?t wait to see them! Friday, July 23rd 7:30 p.m. I hope I will see you at my Bar Mitzvah in July too. Shalom, Brian A Special Place To Belong ? Congregation Ner Tamid EDUCATIONAL CORNER The Lazy Hazy Dazes of Summer are definitely upon us. We rush from an air-conditioned home to an air-conditioned car. We dash from an air-conditioned office building or mall, to another cool place. Our schedules have changed so that we will not become exhausted or exposed to the sun. Yes, summer is upon us and we forget how fast the autumn will come. August 28th is Parent Orientation Day and the first day of Religious School. The High Holidays begin immediately after Labor Day. It is back to school, soccer, tennis lessons, music lessons and ?Religious School.? In order for us to begin the year organized and efficient, we need to know how many students will be assigned to each class. If you have not yet registered, please do so as soon as possible. If you have any questions or would just like to discuss this years? programming, call the office during business hours at 733-6292 to arrange an appointment. I am coming home from my vacation July 25th through July 28th just so I can give this special time to parents with concerns. Summer is lazy, but we have been busy planning an exciting school year. I hope you have a safe and fun-filled 4th of July! Sincerely, Jackie Fleeklop 1 1 i \ j T 1 i 1 1 1 1 1 ! If P| SCHOOL PS WISH LIST.. Families stay in contact with their students throughout the school year which helps to make the transition of leaving home much easier. If you would like to participate in this special program call Program Coordinators Sharlene Flushman at 794-2888 or Susie Godown 456-4838 Congregation Ner Tamid preschool will begin it?s fourth successful year this fall. This year we will offer the parents the option of sending their child for three or five days per week. Children should be ages 3 to 5 years old and potty- trained. Our curriculum will include art, music, math, and reading readiness, pre?science activities, celebration of Jewish holidays and the traditions of Judaism. Our program encourages socialization and independence through free play in a child-centered atmosphere. Additionally, this year we will begin a program of communicating with a preschool on a Kibbutz in Israel. This program will enable us to learn the similarities and differences in the life styles between Jewish children in Las Vegas and Israel. Also, our summer program is in full swing! We still have a few spaces left for your child. If you are interested in our summer or fall program, please call Dotty Gross at the temple. We?d love to have your child join us. We look forward to an exciting productive year. Shalom,Congregation Ner Tamid ? COMMITTEES & AUXILIARIES WHO ARE THEY? (Picture on Page 1) On May 27th, seven young people participated in Sabbath services at Congregation Ner Tamid. Each was a senior in high school planning to attend a university far away from Las Vegas in the fall. What made this group special was that these students had all attended the M.B. Dalitz Religious School a minimum of ten years, with the majority having begun in kindergarten. Together the families collectively represented 85 years of temple membership! These students and their parents have moved as the temple moved, were instrumental in the first building fund campaign, and each celebrated their Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony in our ?new? and first permanent facility. They have seen Rabbis come and go. All are pleased that Rabbi Akselrad has been here since their B?nai Mitzvah celebrations and is here to bless them and wish them well as they begin a new phase of their lives. The Social Action Committee will be sending Hanukkah and Passover packages to them so they can be thinking of us when we are all thinking of them. Mazel Tov to the graduates and their families. We wish them well and hope they will always include visits to Ner Tamid when they return home. OUTREACH The Committee for Inter-Faith Families Our final event of the year was a Passover workshop which was held in conjunction with the Sunday school. Jackie Fleekop, Religious School Administrator, planned a clever event and all participants enjoyed the experience. Three of our Outreach Committee members are serving on a temple board Ad Hoc Committee whose purpose is to review, clarify and recommend policy regarding the non- Jews participation in temple activities. This is a vitally important committee and will have, we hope, a positive effect on our inter-faith families and their involvement in our congregation. On Thursday, July 19th at 6:15 p.m., our committee will meet in Rabbi Akselrad?s study to plan the Outreach 1994- 95 calendar. New members are welcome. To participate, please call Nadine Cracraft at 254-2862 or Sue Joseph at 656-9963. To Belong ? Congregation Ner Tamid 9 ? COMMITTEES & AUXILIARIES SISTERHOOD NEWS THE GREAT LADY -1994 Each year Leo Wilner gives a Great Lady Award to one of our Sisterhood members who has shown the qualities of service, selflessness, and ?Hineni? (Here I am). This year?s Great Lady is all of this and more! Blessed with boundless energy, she has involved herself and her family in the life of Congregation Ner Tamid and Sisterhood. In her life outside Temple, our Great Lady gives to the children of Clark County by substitute teaching. Easily recognized by her friendly smile and laughing voice, she uses the skills learned during her upbringing. Bom in Montgomery, Alabama, she learned her southern accent and the catering business from her mother. Endowed with a beautiful voice, she trained and perfected her gift and shares the pleasure by singing in the choir and will sing for her dinner, lunch, or any other occasion whenever asked. Rita Malkin couldn?t do the Party Shop without her co-chair who often brings her lovely daughters, Idie and Harper. GOLDEN CHAI n The 9th of Av In Spain, in the year 1492, Av 9th was the last date the Jews (who would not be baptized) had to leave the country. It is estimated that 300,000 chose to leave. Suffering terrible privations and many deaths before reaching safety. Those ?Marranos?who were baptized and stayed, had to deal with subterfuge and the dreaded INQUISITION. It is still unknown how many were caught and executed. Here we are in the year 1994; happily living in the U.S.A., celebrating our independence. What a blessing is our country !! Five hundred years separating then and now. Even though we celebrate in many different ways, languages, and customs, everyone is claiming ??Freedom for all?. Let the bells ring and the flag wave.
