Congregation Ner Tamid Bulletin January 2009 Vol. 23 Np. 1 Tevet/Shevat 5769 This year two very recognizable members are sharing the honor of "Congregant of the Year". It is the honor of Congregation NerTamid to recognize Dr. Louis Friedner and Mr. Sid Barasch as "Congregants of The Year" for the year 2008. Both are a familiar sight around CNT. Both honorees, Sid and Louis, come to us with long histories of dedication to their previous respective Temples, the Jewish Community, as well as secular community organizations. Dr. Louis Friedner was born in Jersey City, NJ and is the father of Ronnie Schulman and proud grandfather of three grandchildren. He was married to his first wife for 47 years until she passed away in 2003. Lou married Carolyn in 2005 and since then, they have resided in Henderson where they have been active members of Congregation Ner Tamid. Louis is an Optometrist by trade, and honorably served our country in the military. Before moving to Las Vegas, Louis was a founding member of Temple Bat Yam, in Delaware, where he authored the Temple's Constitution and By-Laws, helped officiate Shabbat services when the Rabbi was unavailable and served on the temple's ?rd of Directors. If that was not enough, when needed he mowed the lawn of the temple and repaired the Torahs. He spent countless hours volunteering for Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, The American Heart Association, as well as othei community charitable organizations. cont. page 2 Jewish Film Festival January 22 ~ 7:00 pm The South Pointe Hotel Cinemark Theater "Strangers" Each year, CNT sponsors a film at the Jewish Film Festival in Las Vegas. Six days in the lives of Eyal, an Israeli Jjung in a kibbutz, and Rana, a ^restinian living in Paris, which starts with an accidental meeting in the Berlin Subway during the World cup finals, will change them completely. An intimate encounter of two strangers in a strange city during World Cup and the second Israel- Lebanon war. A Story that touch's the profound wounds, created by years of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, of a young generation asking to reconnect and even reconcile. Since relocating to Henderson in 2004, Sid and Nancy have been active members of Congregation Ner Tamid. Sid's community volunteerism began with honorably serving our coun^x with his military service. By profession, Sid owned an automotive electronics business for 36 years. Prior to moving to Henderson, Sid served on the Board of Directors with his synagogue in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Achduth Vesholem. Sid held many positions at that synagogue, where he was Vice-President of Finance, Chairman of the Cemetery Committee, teacher in their religious school, helped to run the Outreach Program, as well as serving as liaison between the Board of Directors and the local Jewish Federation. Once becoming members of Congregation Ner Tamid, both Sid & Louis did what came naturally to them?they started volunteering and quickly became a "team." Oftentimes, when you see one, you see the other. Their countless volunteer hours each week include: helping set up for Shabbat services on Friday nights and Saturday mornings, organization and storage of prayer books for all our various services, adding the bookplates in our new prayer books, and many hours polishing the breastplates and crowns for the Torahs prior to High Holy Days. Each week, Louis takes home the Shabbat candlesticks to polish, updates the prayers on the inside of our prayer books, repairs the book bindings, when needed, and every Friday night he mans the hearing device table prior to Shabbat services. Both Louis & Sid are current members of the Ritual Committee and Men's Club, where they help build the Sukkah each year. Sid also chairs the Outreach Committee; and Louis is an avid holiday gift- wrapper, happily spending time at our gift-wrap booth during the December holiday season. Most importarV|^ the inspiration and dedication of both Sid and Louis, and their willingness^^ volunteer, is deeply appreciated by all the office staff. Please join us on Friday, January 23rd as we recognize and honor Louis Friedner & Sid Barasch for their many hours of volunteer work, dedication and commitment to our beautiful congregation. Though not the same as Rosh Hashanah, the secular new year still marks the passage of time and therefore causes us to reflect upon our accomplishments in years past, and hopes for the upcoming year. I think this year in particular brings with it urgency for self improvement. We are living in trying economic times, much of which is beyond our control. As such, we can find comfort and well being in focusing on the things that will improve the quality of our lives that costs little money, but does require effort and focus. How many of us take our health for granted until we receive bad ^fcws? We like to think that we are a ^Ralth conscious society but for many of us, though we are better informed, we still lack the will power to make changes in diet, exercise and lifestyle that will add to our sense of self esteem and quality of life. How many of us find ourselves ignoring our spiritual life? We talk about the importance of God and faith, but again do little about it. An occasional trip to services for a bar or bat mitzvah; dropping off kids for religious school, and High Holydays. But what do we do daily or even weekly that allows us to be thankful for the blessings in our lives or to reconnect with our faith? Little things such as Shabbat observance, taking a class at the Temple, coming to Temple as a family, or keeping a journal of spiritual ^^aments can make us more mindful ^Hour faith and lead to deeper acts of observance. Often times we think that merely belonging totheTemple or"thinking"about our Judaism now and then is enough. But it is in the "doing" that we find the transformative nature of Judaism. There are so many other things that we can do and should do but never found the time or had the inclination. Perhaps the economic challenges that we are all facing will have the ironic impact of making us all realize what is important in our lives that we can control. Ultimately, happiness is a choice; a choice that we make every day. REMEMBER TO.... Drop off your empty computer ink cartidges to the Temple office. Thank you for your continued support of this ongoing fundraiser. Schmooze with the Rabbi Sunday, January 25 at 11:30 am Here's an opportunity to sit down and talk with the Rabbi in a casual setting. Creating a Shelter of Peace A joint meditation for parents and children When did everything get so complicated? Remember how easy it used to be to fix things- a skinned knee with a Band-Aid, fear of the dark with a late-night story, a bruised elbow with a kiss. For the younger among us, remember how good it felt to know someone could make things better? For the parents among us, remember how good it feltto beableto makethings better? It's not so easy anymore. Everywhere we turn something in our lives seems to need fixing. Whenever we solve one problem another one seems to pop in its stead. Everything is complicated and the Band- Aid just doesn't work anymore. As we grow older, problems cannot simply be kissed away. But the power of tackling them together, the power of the hand that peels the band-aid and gently fastens it across a bleeding gash - that power is everlasting. We pray asking God to spread over us a shelter of peace, remembering the shelter of the ongoing love between parents and children, knowing, that when we are troubled , afraid or in pain, that shelter of love is always there even when we cannot see it or feel it. Whatever else happens in our lives, when we have that, we are blessed. Gary & Lynn Kantor 1st Annual Preschoo I Gala Little Hands. Big Hearts. SAVE THE PATE!
