T raditionai Pamilu ^eder fyjaturdatj, Apr>l 1 9 Peataiis on f*age $SAVE THE DATE: Wednesday, May 7th Mark the 60th Year of Israel's Statehood On Wednesday, May 7,2008 at 7:00 PM, Southern Nevada will kick off its commemoration of the State of Israel's 60th year of independence with a special ceremony and musical celebration. This event honoring Israel's statehood and history is free and open to the public and will take place here at Congregation NerTamid. The evening will begin with the observance of Yom HaZikaron (Israel Memorial Day), to honor Israel's fallen soldiers and victims of terror, and will transition into a musical celebration of Yom Ha'atzmaut (Israel Independence Day), titled ''Singing Israel @ 60". The "switch" between these events will be marked with an official flag ceremony, where individuals representing various Jewish and pro-Israel organizations will participate in a processional carrying Israeli flags. The program will conclude with Israeli dancing and a free reception featuring kosher and Israeli refreshments. This 60th jubilee represents a tremendous opportunity for Southern Nevadans to become part of a worldwide celebration of the State of Israel's history and accomplishments, while showing solidarity with America's closest partnerfor peace in the Middle East. About Yom HaZikron and Yom Ha'atzmaut Throughout the world Yom Hazikaron (Israel Memorial Day) always takes place the day before Yom Ha'atzmaut (Israel Independence Day). They are inextricably linked together to remember that Israelis owe their independence and the very existence of the State of Israel, to the soldiers and individuals who sacrificed their lives establishing and protecting it. It tarked the first anniversary of our new building and my /entieth year with the congregation. How much has transpired during this time! Beyond the buildings that we have built, what stays with me the most are the lives that have been touched by our Congregation. When first hired twenty years ago, I remember distinctly the search committee asking me how long I intended to stay. In the committees"'perfect world" they did not want to have to find a new rabbi every few years. They wanted a sense of stability and a rabbi who would grow with them and their families. Fortunately, that too was what my wife and I wanted. To have a Temple that would become our home. Now "empty nesters"the words from my first High Holyday sermon ring even truer... "Cherish the moments, because they go by too fast". And so we begin the next phase of ourTemple life. New buildings, new members, new programs and new faces in our office and Temple board. Mindful of our past we are also mindful of our future. Two things have happened recently that will ensure that future in major ways. The first is the establishment of a new endowment in our Temple Endowment. Existing already are the Amy M. Spector Memorial Fund which provides an annual camp ^fcholarship to a Jewish camp, and the Leon H. Friedman drouth Scholarship Fund for Jewish Leadership & Values which primarily will provide financial assistance to High School students attending Panim in Washington D.C. This unique program teaches students leadership skills and the application of Jewish values in the political process. The latest fund to be established is that of the Gary and Lynn Kantor Early Childhood Education Center. This Fund will provide an endowment to ensure the vitality of our Preschool for years to come. We are so very grateful to Dr. Gary and Lynn Kantor for this incredible gift to our Congregation! I know that their generosity will inspire others to follow in their example. Donations to these and other Temple funds can be made throughout the year and thereby enhance the purpose of each of these funds. Donations can now be made on our Temple website as well. This month another gift arrived at ourTemple to provide for our current and spiritual growth-a new siddur. Yes, after months and months of waiting, our copies of the Mishkan Tefillah have arrived! Thanks to the generosity of Al and Esther Esbin and friends and family of Muriel Toffel we have been able to order copies of this beautiful new prayer book ^cr our Congregation. Over the past year our Shabbat ^^orning minyon has been using this book weekly. This new siddur offers a dramatically new style of worship along with new English translations of many of the prayers. Philip and In the next few months, I will be gradually introducing this new prayerbook into our regular Shabbat worship experience. We and our ritual committee, headed by Del Acosta, will be anxious to hear your comments! As in years past when we have adopted a new sacred book, we encourage you to contact the Temple to sponsor an individual book in honor or in memory of a loved one. Mary Zone, in our office, will be handling this. As you can see, many new changes have greeted us in 2008. As we enter into the second year at our new campus, and I begin my twenty first year with the Congregation, we can do so with a sense of pride and hope. Our Congregation has touched so many lives, and God willing, will continue to do so for generations yet to come. May we continue to go "me-chayil I'chayil" - from ?strength to strength." MARCH 2008 3 Just a Jp Philip Goldstein Cantorial Soloist Here is part two of my wedding article. And now, the infamous breaking of the glass. This event occurs after the Seven Benedictions are recited. The groom is handed a glass (or light bulb or even a plate) which is covered in a white cloth (to prevent injury to others from broken fragments). He places it on the floor and smashes it with his right heel. This custom is thought to date back to Talmudic times. Over time, many interpretations have been posited for this seemingly odd ritual. One explanation is that the loud noise caused by the breaking of the glass would scare away the evil spirits that are jealous of human happiness and are only too happy to cause harm during times of great joy. Another interpretation is that this act is a symbol that the ceremony was legal and proper. The most common interpretation is that the breaking of the glass reminds us of the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, i.e. that even at times of great joy, we must also remember that life can also contain sorrow as well. Others have offered that a glass, once broken, is permanent, like marriage; that love, like glass, is fragile, and must be protected. There is another interpretation for the breaking of the glass: "Rav Ashi was celebrating his son's wedding when the atmosphere among the guests, many of whom were rabbis, grew raucous. The rabbi lifted up an exceedingly valuable white glass and smashed it in front of them. The Talmud reports that the shocked guests sobered up quickly. Breaking a glass soon became incorporated into all wedding ceremonies...." The breaking of the glass marks the conclusion of the wedding ceremony. It is traditionally the groom who performs this ritual, but it is not unusual today for couples to share this custom. After a rather solemn and quiet service, the breaking of the glass gives license to the assembled guests to break out with shouts of "mazal tov." I end with a quote from Rabbi Joseph Telushkin who spoke these very eloquent words at the wedding of his friends, "The smashing of a glass reminds us as well that we still live in an unredeemed world. May the children of your union help to bring about the world's redemption."And, from me, may all of you who are about to celebrate the weddings of your friends and loved ones, know only joy and gladness at these special occasions. Executive Director Nancy Weinberger What a Difference a Year Makes! Last year at this time we were readying the congregation and staff for the Big Day and the move into our new and beautiful facility. In one year's time we have increased membership by over 100 families, started a brand new preschool program, added key staff positions and provided more programs and services than ever before. Under the direction of co-chairs Marsha Goldberg and Lisa Skurow, our membership is continuing to grow. More and more Las Vegas Valley residents hear about the great offerings, educational and programmatic, taking place at Congregation NerTamid. More people are attending Friday evening services and weekly classes. I would like to challenge you, our members, to consider how you might make them feel the warm and welcoming nature of our synagogue. Invite them to join a class, a committee, or sit with you at services. Whenever I speakwith a potential memberduring the membership process, I always inform them of the many wonderful opportunities to get connected at Temple. Committe^fc are a great way to get involved in Temple life anc^r encourage you to contact us if you would like to learn more about the ways you can participate. As we continue to grow the needs of the Congregation and members will increase. As such, a Building & Grounds/House Committee has just been created, to provide oversight and establish a preventative maintenance schedule for the entire facility. Contracts which need to be reviewed and/or renegotiated are part of this committee's responsibility as well as a forecast for capital replacement costs. Under the leadership of Jared Henley, our Facilities Manager, and our committee members Daryl Alterwitz, Jordie Prlmack, Bruce Deifik and Jim Mason, the House committee will ensure that the facility is operated in an efficient and cost-effective manner. If I have not had the pleasure of meeting you yet, I look forward to you stopping in anytime so we can get to know each other. I lookforward to hearing from all of you how we can continue to make CNT'A Special Place to Belong! "One is to avoid needless harm to the environment during the ordinary course of life." ? We are now officially the Gary & Lynn Kantor Early Childhood Education Center. We thank the Kantors for their amazing generosity and thoughtfulness and will strive to make them proud. Our classes are bursting at the seams and we have plans to add more preschool classes and a kindergarten class this fall! Dir. of Early Childhood Education Lonnie Kritzler Did you know that there is more to our Early Childhood Education Center than learning to separate, follow directions, learning colors, shapes, letters, and numbers? Although our days are filled with these typical preschool topics, our children are also immersed in Judaism. Jewish holidays, symbols, and values are an integral part of our curriculum. The children observe Shabbat every Friday by lighting candles and enjoying challah and grape juice. The entire school gathers for a weekly Shabbat Sing led by our very own Director of Lifelong Learning, Craig Rosen. Parents, grandparents, and siblings join us as we welcome Shabbatthrough song and dance. Also, one of our Pre-Kindergarten children takes home our Shabbat Box every Friday. This box is full of art activities, a family Shabbat service, candlesticks and candles, a Kiddush cup, challah, Shabbat story book, and a challah cover made by the child. His or her family can use the contents in this box to either enhance their Shabbat or to begin celebrating Shabbat at home. There is also a camera in the box so the children can show off their Shabbat evening to their classmates. The children observed Tu B'Shevat by planting lima beans and sweet potatoes. You should see the mini-trees sprouting in every room! They learned why trees our important to us and nature and what we can do to take care of them. As you can see, we are busy learning about and practicing our beautiful religion and culture.
