Please remember that all consecrants and their families are invited to a special dinner at 6:00 p.m. prior to services, and will have their pictures taken for permanent display at 7:00p.m. Expansion of Temple Building to be Realized Speaking to a capacity Congregation, Rabbi Akselrad, President Jerry Gordon, and Building Co- Chairpersons Michael Cherry and David Gross announced that the Temple Board is committed and able to plan building the second phase of our Temple: Our Sanctuary, offices, and additional classrooms. Half of the monies needed for this expansion have been committed. Rabbi Akselrad states, "In my entire Rabbinate I have never been so thrilled as to be a part of this special project. Building our Sanctuary is a long held dream for our Congregation, and for me, personally. Message from Our Rabbi As I write this column on September 13th, I, too, share in the mixed emotions of Jews everywhere. For Israel, the risk is great, and in return she receives only a promise: The promise that the PLO and other Arab Nations will recognize her right to live in Peace. Will this agreement work? The Israelis are used to answering many a predicament with the expression "Ein Berayra"?"There is no alternative." It is my hope and prayer that for once the Arab nations will answer in kind, "Yes, there is no alternative." For in the back of everyone's mind, the only other alternative is War. Let us hope that hands clasped in Peace will never again hold weapons of war, then truly shall this be a New Year to remember. Amen, O Rabbi Akselrad A HANDSHAKE. An unbelievable handshake that has shaken the world. Given hesitantly between two enemies, the path toward a tentative, yet hopeful peace has surely been chosen. Rabin, stoic, hardened by years of war, yet hoping to end his life with Peace for Israel. A General, responsible for capturing the land that, as Prime Minister, he now chooses to give up for the promise of Peace. Arafat. The very name conjures up terrorism among Jews and most civilized nations everywhere. Arafat, who in his own way has sought a homeland for his people. Defanged, his money all but depleted, his Soviet sponsor gone, he is a man who, too, must recognize the new realities of the world. The High Holidays proved to be another successful milestone in Congregation Ner Tamid history. Rose Dunn lt=w=!ir?=_?: =_?: ==.?; =???=_?; ??"I Each year, whether appropriate or not, our Congregation's overall perfomance is judged not by the events of the past year but by the happenings of the one month during which falls the High Holidays. This is partly understandable since this period includes the commencement of the religious school year, the Kol Nidre campaign and the time when many members attend their only religious services of the year. In this regard, our membership exceeds 440 families, our Kol Nidre appeal exceeded the goal and we announced our sanctuary campaign of $1,500,000.00 with half of the monies committed; the beginning of a very successful New Year! During the just-concluded High Holidays, I had occasion to visit with Congregants I see throughout the year at numerous Congregational events. Typically, I visited with Congregants I only see at High Holidays because they do not participate in other Congregational activities. While I am the last one to be accused of attending many Friday night services prior to my assuming this office, I have actively participated in other aspects of Congregational life. My hope for the coming New Year is that I see more members at Congregational events and activities. Events will take place whether or not each and every one of you participate and attend. However, each event will be more successful and fulfilling if you attend and participate. Shalom, Gerald GordonThe Congregation is delighted to announce the gift of a beautiful handmade Chupah donated by Dr. Roger and Leslie Simon in honor of their daughter Melissa's Bat Mitzvah on September 3rd. The Simons commissioned two artists, Shoshana Enosh and Reeva Shaffer, to create the Chupah. Using special techniques, the artists created a pattern using the biblical verse, "I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine." The Chupah is handwoven and stitched, and also hand- painted. Now on display in the Sanctuary, the minute and loving detail of this wonderful Chupah is evident to all. We are delighted to receive this wonderful donation and look forward to seeing it used for many, many joyful simchas in the years ahead. The textile artists, Shoshana Enosh and Reeva Shaffer, have work featured in exhibits, publications, fashion shows, and temples in New York, California, Arkansas, New Jersey, Texas, Virginia, and even in England. They can be Bat Mitzvah of Sadie Kirshman My name is Sadie Kirshman. I am having my Bat Mitzvah with my good friend, Lauren Boyers. It is at 10 a.m. on October 16, 1993. I am a 7th grader at the Meadows School. I like sports, especially tennis, skiing, vollyball, and basketball. When I grow up, I want to be either a lawyer or a member of the Secret Service. I'm a 7th grade student at Kenny Guinn Middle School. I like playing soccer and roller skating. I'm also active in student council and other school Activities. I am in the 8th grade at Cashman Junior High School. My Bat Mitzvah is October 2 and I am looking forward to seeing all my friends and relatives from California. Congratulations!^ 4 Congregation Ner Tamid ? dantor'S dorner I am thrilled to have an opportunity to share some feelings and "nachas? that 1 have experienced over the past year, and more recently, during the High Holidays. But first I would like to reflect a bit. Last summer, when 1 was offered a full-time position with Congregation Ner Tamid, I had no idea what it would be like. I had been singing at CNT's Services, B'nei Mitzvah, Tot Shabbats, Outreach Programs and Yom Hashoa Programs for four years, but I considered these things more of a hobby than a job. Over the years countless people would ask me "Why don't you become a Cantor??, but the thought of packing up and moving back east to study did not seem viable. After much consideration, and the opportunity to study while working, I decided to take the plunge. Little did I know that my previous involvement with CNT only represented a fraction of all our Temple was doing. I had no concept of all of the wonderful Programs and activities our Rabbi and committees had been developing over the years. Over the past year I have had the pleasure of becoming a more integral part of the Temple and its happenings. Teaching in both the Religious and Pre- Schools, co-officiating at weddings and funerals, working with our Youth Activities Committee and Youth Groups, UAHC Biennial Rabbi Akselrad and our Temple President Gerald Gordon will be leading a special delegation from our Temple Board to the U.A.H.C. Biennial which will take place October 21-25th. This year's Biennial will be held in San Francisco. Held every two years, the Biennial is the most important gathering of Reform Jewish leaders in the Country. At each conference, over 2,000 representatives attend various workshops on leadership development and programming to help strength Congregations within Reform Judaism. In addition participants will hear the major voices of the Reform movement including UAHC President Alexander Schindler. If you are interested in attending this most inspiring convention please contact Monty Willey at 733-6292. helping prepare our B'nei Mitzvah students and conducting CNT's Adult, Junior and Teen Choirs are some of the duties that have kept me so busy this year. Which brings me to the "nachas". I truly am enjoying all of these experiences, but most recently at High Holiday services I "kvelled" over our Volunteer Adult Choir like a proud mother. When 22 people showed up for rehearsal at the beginning of the summer, I thought 1 was dreaming. This was a challenge and opportunity 1 had always dreamt of. Music has been a source of pleasure and fun for me since I can remember. Both my grandmother and father loved to sing and had beautiful voices; I feel gifted to have inherited a love of music and a part of their spirits. I have participated in may choirs and musicals and imagined one day I would conduct my own choir. With much guidance and help from my accompanist, Lillian Kollar, my wish has come true and I can only try to put into words what a terrific feeling it is. The dedication, enthusiasm and hard work from each individual in the choir came together in perfect harmony for our High Holiday Services. I look forward to many years of "nachas" from our Synagogue and thank the Rabbi, the Board of Directors and all of you for allowing me this incredible opportunity! Rita joined CNT in 1976 and immediately became the bookkeeper and treasurer of the Temple at the same time. From Temple Administrator to Sisterhood President, to board trustee, to caterer extraordinaire and artist-in-residence, and all of the chairmanships in between (of which there are too many to name here), Rita has given selflessly of her time, energy, effort, and devotion. The word "no" has been eliminated from her vocabulary as she is always ready to be of assistance whenever and wherever needed. We look forward to seeing everyone. 150th Anniversary of B'nai B'rith Celebrated the World Over on October 15 CONGREGANT OF THE YEAR Rita Moses Malkin B'nai B'rith, one of the oldest philanthropic organizations in the world, will mark its 150th Anniversary with representatives participating in Shabbat Services in Temples all over the world on October 15th. Here at Congregation Ner Tamid, we will be visited by our local chapter President Art Brand, Ritual Chairman Henry Sandler, and Chaplain and Trustee Bert Black at our services this night, which will include the baby naming of Ryan Joshua Eisner. The Nate Mack B'nai B'rith Lodge, the formal name of our Las Vegas B'nai B'rith, will also be honoring the Honorable District Court Judge Jack Lehman at a Sunday Dinner, October 17 at the Stars Desert Inn Country Club. Funds raised at this event will benefit many programs in Southern Nevada, including Boy's Club, United Way, Easter Seals, and Las Vegas Symphony, to name a few. With over half our goal already obtained, hope for the future growth of Congregation Ner Tamid is being realized. Our objective was surpassed and those who contributed should be proud in knowing that Congregation Ner Tamid will be able to maintain the high standards in our programs and services. I have received several compliments on the condition of the Temple for the Holidays and the smooth operations during this two week period. The office and maintenance staff deserve the majority of the credit. Without them, this Temple would not be able to provide you with the service you need and expect. Willey Outreach Meets "Geraldo"! Back by popular demand, Outreach?the Committee for Interfaith Families?is once again sponsoring a special program designed to inform and broaden the awareness of our Congregation to issues affecting inter?faith couples and their families. Using a "talk show" style format, Rabbi Akselrad will play host on Sunday, October 10, at 10:30 a.m. until noon to a panel composed of members of our Congregation who represent various outlooks toward this important issue. Previously offered two years ago, over 100 people attended this revealing and fascinating program. If you have a teenager, are involved in a relationship, or are simply looking for incite in dealing with the complexities of inter-marriage, you won't want to miss this program. There is no charge for the program and it is open to the entire community. Teenagers and young adults especially are encouraged to attend. The program will take place in the Temple Social Hall. Please refer to the insert in this bulletin for more details.Congregation Ner Tamid CNT Preschool News Congregation Ner Tamid Preschool began its new year on September 8th. Our focus in September has been on getting acquainted with each other and learning about the Jewish Holidays. We were excited to have Rabbi Akselrad blow the shofar for us. Also, we baked honey cakes with members of the Golden Chai. We made decorations for the Succah and learned about the many different varieties of fruits and vegetables. We even made fruit salad to help us celebrate Succot. This year CNT Preschool has both a three-year-old program and a Pre-Kindergarten program. Leah Kamer is teaching our four- year-olds and is helping them prepare for kindergarten. In addition, we would like to welcome Annette Sooper to our staff. Annette will be working with the three-year-old group. In addition to having three sons, Annette has an extensive background in Early Childhood Education. She has worked in Head Start programs as well as Jewish Community Centers. Annette is originally from the Boston Area, and we are very fortunate to have her teach at our preschool. Also, I would like to thank Sandy, Scott and Megan Stolberg for their donation of a wonderful stereo system. The children and teachers have been truly enjoying it! Thanks to the Rapoport family for donating a terrific book about Jewish Holidays. These gifts are greatly appreciated! Please come visit our preschool. The last B'nai Mitzvah class was quite a success, with our four students who formed lasting friendships and a sacred bond to their Jewish faith. Although each person was in the class for very different reasons, the time and energy spent together was truly an uplifting experience for all. Holidays are upon us and as we rush to get clothing for services or food for that special meal, we are reminded of the things that separate Religious holidays from everyday secular celebrations. The memories, the tradition and the responsibilities. As part of this community we show our commitment to our Jewishness by physically attending services and financially supporting programs and the facility. We recognize our responsibility to educate our children and to help them understand that being Jewish means helping to make the world a better place for all people. This year our students will not just step into new classrooms but they will step into a new perspective of their Jewish education. We have a creative curriculum that will appeal to the MTV generation! Our teachers are excited about this year's programs and this energy will radiate to their students. We had an enormous turn-out at our parents' orientation that was held on September 12th. We take this as a sign of support for our new programs by a group of concerned and involved parents. October is a month of joyful holidays to experience by all. As we study about Succot, we cannot help but be reminded that Thanksgiving as we know it in America was copied after the Jewish Holiday. In conjunction with this harvest festival, we will remember the needs of others as we participate in "Project Caring." Students will collect items to allow others within our Las Vegas community to have a more comfortable life. At the Oneg on October 1st, students will display art they have made from living things. You must attend and be amazed at our talented artists. Our new students in our youngest classes; 2nd, 1st, and Kindergarten; will be blessed as they approach the threshold of their Religious Education. This is a touching moment that should be celebrated by all. Please join us on October 8th for Simchat Torah family dinner and Consecration Service. Whether you are a parent of a child in our school or just a person who enjoys watching Judaism staying alive, you should attend programs that our students are involved in. It will do you good! The meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 5, at 6:30 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room immediately following Religious School and will last approximately one hour. During our October 5 meeting, we will hold elections. If you are interested in running for an office, you must be a paid member of T.N.T. before the election is held. We are also requesting that you write a SHORT note telling us your name, grade, the position you are running for, and why you want to be a member of the board. We will be filling five (5) offices this year: President, Vice President, Secretary ITreasurer, Historian, and Parliamentarian. The President will lead all meetings. You must be in 8th grade to run for this office. The Vice President will lead considered for Vice President. The Secretary/Treasurer will be in charge of taking minutes (notes) during the meetings and will help maintain our financial records. All T.N.T.ers are eligible to run for this office. Our Historian will create a photo album from pictures taken during the year. Again, all T.N.T.ers can run for this position. Finally, the Parliamentarian will help the President keep things running smoothly by helping to maintain order during our meetings. You must be in 8th grade to run for this office.
