Introducing Mrs. Helen J. stewart.
Stewart* I
who happens to he guest of first honors tonight. The dates 1 gathered I
from an old scrap hook and hope they are correct. I In 1873 Mrs. Stewart left California a young hrlde of eighteen,!
To those of you here who are not acquainted with Mrs
I would like to read a few lines, a brief sketch of who the lady Is,
with her husband Arolilbald Stewart, and settled in Pioche, tlevaca, a |
wild roaring mining camp, where more than one man has been killed before breakfast. ( I wonder ho. that sounds to the new brides here
tonight.) Ur. Stewart purchased the old Mormon ranch of 0. U. Gass,
in 187S and moved to Las Vegas, Hevada, April 26th, , This pioneer woman has almost continnusly resided at Las Vegas
since the above date, raising her family and aiding in the deve
of Southern Nevada.
per more than forty years Mrs. Stewart has been a strong fac
tor in the social and business life of Lincoln and Clark Counties.
At her home a thousand travelers have been sheltered
She is also greatly beloved by the Indians, to whom she has
always "been a good friend.
I thank you
I April 16th> 1924.
In honor of Mrs. Stewart*s
Seventieth Birthday.

Behind the rushing iron monster.
Much good friends had she among us,
In the California Southland, By the big, bright sea waters, And we prayed, also we fasted,
That her illnes might go from her*
Two good friends had she among us,
Singled out from all the others,
Sam Yount napo and his wife Lena.
Sam Yount known as the fat man,
Who once dw'elt in Ash Meadows
With our tribesman, old Horse-shootum, Who once killed off all his horses.
And they prayed, likewise they feasted, But more often played and feasted,
So the great spirit now has heard us, And has healed her of her illness.
Soon she travels to the Eastward, Back to the Vegas valley,
By the roaring Colorado,
Beside the mystic Boulder canyon,

I would talk of Stewart maputs,
The great white mother of the redskin
She dwells in the Vegas valley,
By the towering Charleston mountain.
Shewastakenwithanillness, And she journeyed to the Southland
Two days she journeyed to the southward,
