Congregation NerTamid February 1996-5756 me5sa$e from our abbi dieeb 'The February 25th marks this year's Super Sunday campaign by the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas. On this day dozens of volunteers, includ?ing many from our own Congrega?tion, will be manning phones in an ef?fort to reach literally thousands of people. On the surface what is hap?pening is a massive fund raising pro?ject which raises over $70,000 toward this year's campaign. But on another perhaps even more important level, this day serves to remind the Jewish community that we ARE a commu?nity. Over the past ten years the num?ber of Jews in Clark County has grown to over 50,000 strong! It is obvious that community growth leads to communal needs. Our tradition teaches us "yehudi arvin zeh b'zeh"?"each Jew is re?sponsible one for the other." The monies which are raised from thou?sands of individuals is the most effec?tive way for us to collectively provide for the future and present stability of our community. What are some of these projects? Synagogues, the Jewish Community Center, Hebrew High, youth groups, Jewish educa?tion, Jewish Family Services, and dozens of other projects and pro?grams both here and abroad. Whethe^ we realize it or not each one of us ha^ been touched by a Federation pro?gram or project. Over the years we can take pride in the fact that our Federation cam?paign has indeed grown. The reality is that our communal needs are grow?ing even faster. I ask each of you therefore to join with me in making your commitment to this year's cam?paign. The amount is not what is im?portant, your participation is. & B'Shalom, Rabbi Sanford D. We avoided raising the contribution level last year in light of the building fund imposition, but we are simply unable to avoid a raise for 1996 in light of increased costs and increased demand for programs. Despite our expanding membership, an increase in unavoidable. The Board spent the last three months first investigating the need and then the means by which an increase could be implemented to create the least possible hurt to the membership. We are very cognizant of the level of commitment required of you, especially those families who have children in the religious school. To lessen the impact of the increase (and to actually create the real possibil?ity of a DECREASE in the annual commitment) the Board also adopted a rebate program involving SCRIP. As has been explained in flyers and other materials sent to each of you, this long-running program by which the membership can purchase from the Congregation gift certificates for use in supermarkets throughout Clark County and elsewhere can now be used to actually decrease your annual commitment by up to $100. If simply half of our membership par?ticipates in this program and purchases enough SCRIP to equal this year's com?mitment increase, the annual return to the Congregation from the SCRIP program will more than triple. This is a no-cost, certain win for both you and the Congregation. Please join each of the members of the Board of Trustees and your other fel?low Congregants in participating in this worthwhile fund-raising program. For each $100 of gift certificates which are purchased, you will receive $2.50 in com?mitment credit. It's the best deal in town. *7 Jerry Gordon HELP US MEET OUR GOAL! ATTENTION 1997 B'NAI MITZVAH PARENTS In January, letters were mailed to parents whose children will have a Bar/Bat Mitzvah in 1997. If you did not receive a letter, please contact Rabbi's secretary, Judy, 733-6292 as soon as possible. Parents are asked to choose their dates from this list and submit their first, second and third choices as soon as possible. OCongregation NerTamid February 1996-5756 TtT Hotesfrom our CantonalSo foist It's that time of year again! What time? Jeivish Music Season time. Since coming to this Congre?gation as full-time Cantorial Soloist, I have had the opportunity to put to?gether an annual special Shabbat ser?vice dedicated to Jewish Music. We've experimented with many forms of Jewish Music including a Ladino service, History of Jewish Music service, Chassidic service, and last year we were graced with the presence of my mentor, Cantor William Sharlin, and enjoyed a ser?vice filled with his compositions. Each year people have said, "We loved the service, what will you do next year?" Here's the answer... A Jazz Shabbat Evening Service. This service will include a variety of Jazz melodies written by Jose Bowen who has won awards for composition and has per?formed with Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Liberace, Hubert Vaws and many others. I am especially excited to be including a small group of in?strumentalists to enhance this service. Please invite your friends and family to a most unique service on Friday, February 9. The next Tot Shabbat Program will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday evening, February 16 in the Beit Tefillah. Topic for this program is "Shalom Bayit" "honoring our family." Join us as we welcome our youngest congregants and their families to this educational, creative, and most of all FUN program. The result is an improved academic level. The support of parents who make sure the students attend regu?larly has helped us prepare their chil?dren to be informed Jewish adults. We continue to expose our stu?dents to Jewish Culture through mu?sic, art, drama, cooking, and holiday programming. January was a busy month with a special program for Martin Luther King Jr. weekend and Mitzvah Day. Students learned from our guest speakers and experienced their Judaism by becoming involved in Social Action. Students were assigned projects for Mitzvah Day and they participated with enthusiasm. The Fifth grade completed its course on life cycle events. Rabbi Akselrad con?ducted a mock wedding in the Beit Tefillah. Actions teach more than words and this wedding was a chance for students to act out what they had discussed in class. Several of our teens attended an educational and fun weekend in Los Angeles. During their trip to Los Angeles they visited the Museum of Tolerance. Our Passover candy sale is still in progress as well as preparations for the Purim Carnival which will be March 3rd. The involvement of every?one in these fund-raisers is very im?portant to our school and we appreciate your support. TuB'Shevat is in celebration of trees and the gifts it gives us. Here at the M.B. Dalitz Religious School we will celebrate this holiday with a Seder for students and interested par?ents on February 4th beginning at 9:30 and ending at 10:30 for K thru 3 and 11:00 to 12:00 for grades 4 thru 7. This joyful holiday should not be over?looked as it reminds us of natures gifts and our responsibility to nature. Actions do speak louder than words and although we sometimes have very structured class work, we do try to offset this with our Cultural Experiences and Programs. Mark your calendars now with the below mentioned dates: February 4 Tu B'Shevat Seder Day February 11 Candy Sale Ends March 1 Purim Family Service March 3 Purim Carnival Shalom, JACKIE FLEEKOP Jewish Music Season Concert SATURDAY, MARCH 16 AT 7:00 P.M. Wolpe. Rabbi Wolpe has quickly become one of Judaism's brightest and most exciting new voices. He has written several books about basic Judaism including others about G-d. In this book, Rabbi Wolpe seeks to explore many of the questions children ask about G-d as they mature, but also seeks to help adults feel comfortable with their own view about G-d. Included in the book are a variety of discussion questions and family experiential projects that seek to bring families closer together through their spiritual be?liefs. If you have children, grandchildren, or simply want to know a bit more about Judaism's views on G-d, you will not want to miss Rabbi Akselrad's review and discussion of this marvelous book. Lunch will be served at 12:00 p.m. with a charge of $5 for Sisterhood members, and $7.50 for non-members. For information, call the Temple, 733-6292. O CYBER COMMUNICATIONS AT NERTAMID It seems the world of cyber communications (c-mail) is creeping into every corner of the country, including Congregation Ner Tamid. Cost and time TBA in the March Bulletin. &February 1996-5756 Congregation NerTamid Social Action In Action The Social Action Committee has been very busy the last few weeks. During the holiday time, vol?unteers from our committee assisted at WEAP (Weekend Emergency Assistance Program) in their distribu?tion of Christmas packages of food and children's presents. We also vis?ited three senior citizen facilities to bring Chanukah cards and gifts. A new project this year was the serving of Christmas dinner to more than one hundred seniors at the Henderson Senior Citizen Center. There were fourteen Ner Tamid volunteers in?volved in this mitzvah, including four NTTY members and two former NTTYites. It was a great success and we have already been asked to return and serve dinner again next year. With the generosity of Lois and Malcolm Doctors, we were able to provide gifts for several Jewish chil?dren at Chanukah who were referred to us by the Jewish Family Service Agency. In addition, we provided a warm jacket and toy to the great- grandson of a congregant whose fam?ily had a special need this year due to an illness. Thank you to the entire Congre?gation for your support of our Second Annual Mitzvah Day on January 21st. It was a wonderful success. We espe?cially appreciate the cooperation of the Religious School teachers and stu?dents, the Sisterhood, Brotherhood, and Golden Chai. It is an exciting day on the Social Action calendar when multiple mitzvot are done through?out the community. Donations of clothing, food, toys, books, and espe?cially the most precious gift, that of your time, are appreciated very much. O Bette Stahl and Eileen Kollins GOLDEN CHAI DEJA-VU! The True Meaning of Mitzvah & Tzedakah There is a special mitzvah that a congregational family has done that's worth sharing. This family won a mountain bike at the Hanukkah Bazaar. They decided to "cash in" the bike and use the money to purchase Hanukkah gifts for children whose holiday looked very bleak. As it happened, we had been asked by the Jewish Family Service to provide gifts for a family with four chil?dren who had very limited money for the holiday. We had also had a request to provide a warm jacket for a toddler, being raised by his grandparents due to his mother's seri?ous illness. Suddenly we had the perfect donor for those gifts. The family returned the bike to the store, purchased items for the five children, going well over the amount of money of the return, and provided a happy and meaning?ful holiday for three families, those who received the dona?tions and the wonderful family who made them. This story reminds us that with a little imagination, we can be "Mitzvah Heroes." One good deed does make a dif?ference. & At the first meeting in January the new board members and I were installed by Rabbi Akselrad. We are looking for?ward to an innovative and enjoyable year particularly be?cause of all the "new blood" on the board. It is gratifying to welcome these new members who bring with them lots of enthusiasm as well as fresh ideas. January was also special because our program guests were the Rabbi and Cantorial Soloist Bella Feldman. As al?ways, they were terrific and greatly enjoyed by all. We thank them both for their time and effort on our behalf. We will do our best to continue, and to provide top-notch pro?grams at every meeting. O Love and Shalom, Helen Zliser, President 1996 Board Helen Zliser, President Sol Tolpan, Vice President Phil Seltzer, Treasurer Rachel Putterman, Recording Secretary Judy Motin, Corresponding Secretary Harvey & Estelle Miller, Trustees George Lipshaw, Membership Chair Frances Lipshaw, Catering Chair Ronae Fink, Tribute Chair A1 Simon, Sunshine Harvey Miller, Raffles Selma Katz & Mitzi Gordon, Mailing Sid Garber, Games Adele Miller, Welcome Program Chair & Publicity Chair, OpenedWell, it is now February and the leaves are turning, the grass is brown?ing, and the Temple is buzzing. There is so much going on at Ner Tamid. We have added five new Boys of Brotherhood bringing the total of in?volvement to 65. This is a remarkable achievement! Many of the new Boys of Brotherhood have been invited to participate by other members, so whatever we are doing, it is really working. Last call for Entertainment Books! We had a remarkable year for Entertainment Books, and we are winding down the sales season. Please contact any member of Brotherhood to pick up a book. These books still make a great gift and can be used until November. Remember, the proceeds go toward the support of our Temple. Brotherhood and Sisterhood are currently researching the possibility of starting a scholarship fund for our Hebrew School. Each auxiliary would contribute to this fund and we would then use it to provide partial scholar?ships for children wishing to attend our Hebrew School. Anyone who is interested in being on this bi-partisan committee, or if you want to donate to this scholarship fund directly, con?tact Scott Dockswell, 897-7888 or Maxine Gratz, 898-3592.
