Ever since December final Champagne walk facility, we have been new home "sealed" It has been exciting not we are going, but also have come. And now, beautiful new Tamid home will be 3rd, when we had our through our new "locked out" and our until the grand event, only to know where to realize how far we February 24, 2006 our Congregation Ner ready. In December 2005 I was on the bimah when we had our final service and had the honor of closing the ark doors for the last time when the Torah's were taken out of our old Emerson facility. It was an emotional moment for everyone that evening and it has been exciting, looking toward the moment when we would open the doors and place the Torah in its new CNT home. Once the Torah walk is completed, the time will finally be upon us to make this important transition a reality. So much work has been done; from our spectacular architect, Jon Sparer, to our diligent builder, Ze'ev Yacobovsky, to Jerry Gordon, the man that continues to oversee the process of making the magic happen. We can all be thankful knowing that our Temple has been enfolded within these capable hands. The Gala and Torah walk will be exhilarating, passionate, and tender as we all realize that after being "wandering Jews" for the last year, we truly will call this home. The exemplary programs in education and enlightenment that have long been planned with all of you in mind will be ones that bring pride and spiritual connection into ourtemple lives. From the youngest members of the congregation to the oldest, we have considered and implemented tools for growth and connection, and we welcome all of you to join us for this splendid weekend. Through your support, your input, your questions and your diligence we have made this dream come true and now it is time to celebrate our joy in the birth of our creation. Join us as we open the doors and our hearts to this wonderful new time in our lives, each of us walking into our Temple in gratitude that together we have accomplished something spectacular! Our Temple ~ Our Gala ~ Our lives connected together.... this weekend and beyond! F eb r u a r y 2 0 0 7 3 ) Just a Philip Goldstein, Cantorial Soloist Although I did not intend that these articles about wedding rituals would be in ar^^ particular order, next up is the processional and its accompanying music. I'll begin with the music. Music at a Jewish wedding is considered a religious obligation. In ancient times, the flute was most often played for the bride and groom and many weddings today still include it. The music played during the processional should not only be joyous but also "purposeful and stately.? Often one chooses just one melody forthe entire processional, but when the bride begins her journey down the aisle, the melody will change to distinguish the arrival of the "queen." What comes to mind most often as we think of wedding music is the "traditional" song, "Here Comes the Bride." This piece is usually not included in a Jewish ceremony. In fact, what are considered the most conventional choices for many weddings, Wagner's "Lohengrin" and Mendelssohn's "Midsummer Night's Dream", are purposely excluded. This is due to the fact that Wagner was a notorious anti-Semite and Mendelssohn was a Jew who converted to Christianity. There are many beautiful and very appropriate alternatives to the aforementioned pieces. There are many popular Hebrew songs one may choose including poems from the Song of Songs (i.e., "Dodi li" - "I Am My Beloved's"), "Erev Shel Shoshanim" ("Evening of Roses"). Or, other options are Yiddish folk songs or Sephardic music. In the United States, the custom is for the bride and groom to be preceded down the aisle by their respective attendants. This custom arose in ancient times when the bride and groom were treated like royalty and therefore deserving of an entourage. In Judaism, it is "both an honor and an obligation to serve the wedding king and queen." These escorts, known in Hebrew as shoshvinim ("attendants") may have originated with Adam and Eve. It is said that the angels Michael and Gabriel escorted Adam to his marriage to Eve. This is probably how the custom of having a best man and a maid/matron of honor derived. This practice, however, did not come into widespread use until Talmudic times. Today, parents escort their daughters and sons down the aisle to the chuppah. The bride and groom can choose whom they wish to accompany them as there are nj^ Jewish laws that mandate who walks down the aisle with the bride or the groom. Traditionally, the briefly and groom have two shoshvinim each, to act as their right and left hands. Those who attend the groom may hold the rings; the bride's may hold the ketubah (the wedding contract) during the ceremony. In Yiddish, the attendants are called unterfuhrers which connotes the specific duty they have of escorting the couple to the chuppah. The unterfuhrers were often two married couples (other than the parents) whose job it was to accompany the bride and groom down the aisle. And so, our journey proceeds. Everybody worries about wars and hope they will be safe. I wish that someday wars will be a thing of the past. Someday, oh someday, I wish that there will be peace on Earth. Craig Rosen Education Director Or Chadcish (a new light) When interviewing for this job, one of the first things I had the chance to see were the plans for our new campus. This month we celebrate the opening of our new synagogue and I am thrilled to be a part of this historic event. Congregation Ner Tamid truly will be a "?new light" unto the Jewish community of Las Vegas and Henderson. Our Religious School and youth programs continue to thrive. In December, we celebrated Hanukkah in school and all students received candles, a dreidel. and gelt. We learned Hanukkah songs, ate lots of food, and sang the blessings together. Our confirmation students had a wonderful weekend trip to Los Angeles. We celebrated Shabbat and Havdallah together. We also ate brunch at Canter's Deli on Fairfax Blvd. On Sunday we had an opportunity to visit the Museum of Tolerance. While at the museum we shared tears as we walked through the exhibits. It was a very powerful experience and one that brought the confirmation class much closer. January also was a busy month as our TNT youth group (grades 6-8) went to play Laser Tag and many students in NTTY (9-12 grade) attended the NFTY Social Action Weekend in Arizona. We also held a Camp Fair in January and were visited by many Jewish summer camp programs. Scholarship applications and camp brochures are available for Jewish Summer Camp experiences through the Temple office. May the light that we create from our new campus, be a Ner Tumid an eternal light; one that burns bright for many years to come. IrvDuchowny, Executive Director Each year, I'm fortunate to be able to go to my NATA (National Association of Temple Administrators) conference. Last year, in November 2005, we gathered in Houston, and we went, as a group, to the Johnson Space Center. All of 2006 I've been looking at the calendar I brought back with me, and the photograph I've been looking at for the month of December has been of the Space Shuttle about to be launched. This image has reminded me of just where we are right now, re: our move into our new home. It takes thousands of hours, manpower, technology and coordination to safely launch a Space Shuttle and we are engaged in a similar experience. While building a new facility isn't as risky as returning our fellow man back to earth from space, there are strong similarities to me. We are about to embark on a new adventure, after having been in temporary offices for over a year; we are about to move into our new temple, after having our services at King David Chapel, also for over a year (and a HUGE THANK YOU to Jay Poster and Ken Knauss for allowing this to happen); we are going to be having, once again, High Holiday services in our own building, after having to go to Green Valley Ranch Station for HH 2006; we will once again be able to have our Saturday mornings Torah Reading/Minyan/Discussions, and our children's B'nai Mitzvot, in our own Sacred Spaces; and we will once again be able to have our Adult Education classes, Tot Shabbat, Board meetings, Family Promise and Social Action events and so much more, under our own roof, for the first time in over a year. The only activities that need to wait a bit longer are our Religious School (remaining at Gibson until September), and our Pre-School (opening in August). And we're ready! Our Staff, Board and fabulous core of Volunteers have been reviewing just what needs to be done, not only for the actual move, but for our wonderful activities the last weekend of February, our Gala Opening. As I've written prior, the Gala Saturday evening of Dinner, Entertainment and Live Auction, followed on Sunday by our Torah Walk, starting at 7:30 am from King David, thJ Consecration Service of "55 North", and the tours, entertainment, food and community?wide event? are all being finalized as you read this. Immediately following our opening weekend, we move right into Purim, Friday Night services, and opening rounds of B'nai Mitzvot (approximately 11 B'nai Mitzvot in 11 weeks, and I'm not sure which is more of a challenge, the "traveling road show" we did in 2006 for our B'nai Mitzvah families, or having 11 in 11 weeks, but "it's all good?). One final thought - If you want to be one of our Torah Carriers during the Torah Walk, you need to contact either myself (iduchownv(a)lvnertamid.org) or Stu Solomon, our Men's Club President, (sparkevlv@cox.net) to sign up. While anyone can walk with us, either part way or the entire 4.6 mile walk, only those who sign up before the walk starts may be able to carry a Torah - we need this procedure to properly institute safety and security measures, and to be able to determine additional details necessary for this wonderful and important step in our moving into our new home. This is a very exciting time for everyone at CNT. We once again invite you to be a part of our activities, our progress, and of course, our new home.
