GREGATION NER TaMID Bulletin ?? October 2009 Vol 23. No. 9 Tishn/Cheshvm 5770 MARLA AND TOM LETIZIA HONORED AS CNT'S MENSCHEN OF THE YEAR 2009 On Saturday, November 21, 2009 at the Four Seasons, Marla and Tom Letizia will join a distinguished list of those previously honored as Mensch of the Year by CNT: Jon Sparer, Yaffa (z?l) and David Dahan, Jim Rogers, Hon. Friday, October 2Bruce Matza, Temple President There are things that are important for us, so we speak about them. There are things very important to us ? and so words flow out from us, bursting with emotion, meaning and depth. And then there are things that shake us to the core. The core of our being does not wait for the mind?s permission or for the right words ? there are no words that can contain it. It breaks out in a cry, in a scream and in silence. This is the sound of the Shofar: A crying voice, not even of a human being, but of an animal?s horn. We need the animal ? not for its coarseness, but on the contrary, because we need to express something so sublime, it cannot find words; so essential and unbounded, the mind can neither fathom it nor hold it back. These are the words of Rabbi Tzvi Freeman and they capture my feelings about the sounding of the Shofar, especially during the High Holy Days we just celebrated. In addition to our regular Shofar players during the Rosh Hashanah service, we were treated to the sounds of the Shofar sounded by members of our 4th and 5th grade religious school. When these young members of our congregation ushered in the New Year, we were watching the next generation connect with a tradition that is as old as Judaism. Special thanks to Rick Carter and Candace Barr for sponsoring this year's Youth Shofar Choir by purchasing the Shofars for our students. Appreciation also to Lee Gordon for designing and creating the Shofar stand presented to Rick and Candace. It was a great effort by teenage instructors, Niah Anson, C.J. Christensen, Lanie Cohen, and Justin Webb. Finally, we recognize all of our 4th and 5lh (and a few 6lh) grade students for sounding their Shofars in such grand style and bringing us a very happy Jewish New Year. LV N E RTA M ID .O RG Rabbi Ruth Adar Visiting Assistant Rabbi Have you ever noticed that we Jews have a lot of different ways of saying things? Recently someone asked me why some people say ?good Shabbes? and others say ?Shabbat Shalom.? On a holiday, someone may have wished you a ?Gut yuntiff!? or a ?Yom tov sameach!? Now that the High Holy Days are past, you may hear some people talking about ?Sukkot? and others talking about ?Succos.? And have you noticed that the people who wear a ?tallit? wear a ?kippah? but those who wear ?tallesim? tend to wear ?yarmulkes?? It?s a great big Jewish world, and we have a rich linguistic tradition that includes several different dialects and languages. The Hebrew we use from the bimah here at CNT is Sephardic Hebrew: it has many words that end in ?T? and accents are always at or near the end of the word. The Sephardic Hebrew greeting for Friday night is ?Shabbat Shalom!? This is also the pronunciation used on the street and in schools in Israel. However, some of you may remember growing up with a different way of pronouncing Hebrew, the Ashkenazic pronunciation. Then the accent was in the beginning or middle of the word, and many of the ?T? sounds came out as ?S?: Shabbes, tallis, Succos. The Jews of Eastern Europe pronounced Hebrew in the Ashkenazic style, and that is why it also sounds similar to Yiddish, which was their daily language. ?Gut Shabbes? is a Yiddish greeting, and ?yarmulke? is Yiddish for the little hat that we call a ?kippah? in Sephardic Hebrew. Yiddish isn?t the only Jewish secular language. We also have Ladino felso called Judezmo), which is the secular language of the Sephardim. If you rave ever sung ?Ocho Candelikas? at Chanukah, you?ve used Ladino. It sounds very much like Spanish, but it is, like Yiddish, a separate and beautiful language of its own. We are fortunate at CNT to have people from many different backgrounds in our community, making ours a wonderful opportunity for learning and enjoyment. So, whether you have a ?Shabbat Shalom? or a ?Gut Shabbes? every week, I wish you a ?Gut Yuntiff!? a ?Chag Sameach Sukkot!? and ?Happy Sukkot!? It is a beautiful sight seeing 78 children celebrate and embrace the traditions of Judaism! This year's Preschool High Holy Day Services brought together over 100 preschoolers and parents.
