I also like to play hocky. I will be a Bar Mitzvah on January eighth. President's Message First, I hope everyone had a very good holiday season and 1993 will be the best year ever for all of us. We all grow more wise and more aware of what really has meaning in the long run?our children, families, community, and world. I know those who donated to the needy during our drive last month feel satisfaction. Thank you to the Social Action Committee for keeping us forever aware of our good fortune to be able to keep on giving to those who are in need. Last month we had our first Winter Auction. A special thanks to Ron Worth, Malcolm Doctors, Dyane Kohnen, and Jay Poster who put in long hours and hard work to bring Continued on Page 6 Rabbi's Message A Riddle: When you are young you have all you ever seem to need. When you are old, there is never enough. And no matter what age, when you are in a hurry, it seems to have disappeared. What is it? Time. So valuable, so precious, yet so unappreciated, until it is too late, we take the simple notion of Time for granted. From the perspective of the very young, everyone who is tall seems to be old, and days can seem to last forever. Standing near the end of ones life, especially at the side of a dying relative or friend, Time seems to pass by in the wink of an eye. As Jews who find ourselves in two cultures, we have two opportunities to reflect upon the meaning of our lives, and the preciousness of Time itself. At Rosh Hashana our religion teaches us to take an accounting of our lives and to "number our days." The holiday is celebrated with joy but with a somber background. The secular New Year however is celebrated by much merry-making, loud parties and a frivolity which belies the preciousness of Time. It is as if we seek to deny the reality that Time is slowly but surely marching on, whether we like it or not. At the High Holidays I spoke about the notion of a "second chance." That too often when illness sets in we say, "if only I had done this." Through the grace of luck and modern medicine many of us are greeted with a second chance to change our lives. But such change implies not the denial of Time but a partnership with Time. By recognizing the finality of life we are pushed towards taking our lives seriously. Let the New Year come, and let us celebrate. Not just for the New Year itself, but for the second chance it brings to us to better our lives, and to direct our lives towards a happier and healthier lifestyle. Bar Mitzvah of Danny Gross My name is Danny Gross. I'm thirteen years old and in the seventh grade at Greenspun Junior High. My hobbies are tennis, playing guitar, listening to music, and reading. On January 15th, 1993, I will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah. Among those witnessing my special event will be my parents, Dotty and David, my sister, Jennifer, and friends and family ranging from such places as Georgia, Florida, and Pennsylvania. I'm very excited about my special day. Family Services & Shabbat Dinners All Dinners begin at 6:00 p.m. All Family Services begin at 7:30 p.m. Please join Rabbi Akselrad, Cantorial Soloist Bella Feldman, and the Jr. Choir for a wonderful Shabbat experience. Congregation Ner Tamid 3 * Visions y*{<: v*w *? TU B'SHEVAT I know no one is excited to receive their temple bill, but I was excited to send out the December bills. This is the first time the bills have been computerized. This is a major step for our congregation. It will add to our efficiency by saving time and getting the statements out the first week of each month. Many thanks to the Board of Directors, and especially to Sheldon Rosenberg for making this possible. Please understand that we are currently running two systems, manual and computer, until we work out the bugs. If you have any questions regarding your bill, please call me. The end of each month will always be the cut-off date for the posting of all checks. If a check is received after the first of the month, the payment will be reflected on the next month's statement. Thank you for your cooperation during this transition time. Robyn Galbraith Administrator A tv-L, ?3N Tot Shabbat Program Big Success! This holiday three aspects tradition: historically recalling the siege of Jerusalem in the years 66-70 C.E.; agriculturally, a reminder of the value of trees in our lives on this earth; and spiritually representing a symbol of life. The planting of a tree is a declaration of the belief that there will be a future for children, and that they will reap the fruit of this generation?s labor. "Fifteenth Day of Shevat," which falls on February sixth of this year, is a minor holiday. It is first mentioned in the Mishnah, the part of the Talmud that contains the Jewish laws that were handed down Our December Tot Shabbat program was our most successful ever, with over 50 children participating. Children were treated to various art projects, a clown, and special Chanukah foods. In addition, Rabbi Akselrad and Bella Feldman led the children in song and prayer. Our next Tot Shabbat will be held on March 27th, 1993. Tot Shabbat is open to the entire community at no charge and is geared for children two to six years old and their siblings. Under the able direction of Betty Stahl and Sheryl Chenin-Webb, the program is underwritten by our Temple's Sisterhood. To place your child on our Tot Shabbat mailing list, please call Judy at the Temple office at 733-6292. December was full of Chanukah Celebration! Religious School had its Chanukah parties and mid-week Hebrew classes enjoyed learning new Chanukah songs and Israeli dancing. We had a fantastic turnout at our Tot Shabbat and everyone had a great time. Once again the Junior Choir did a wonderful job at our Family Service. Remember, Parents: No Junior Choir rehearsal until January 10th. The Adult Choir led the ORT Sabbath Service this month and sounded marvelous. We are always looking for new members. Anyone inter?ested, please contact me at the temple office. This month we began rehearsals for a very special service in February in celebration of Jewish Music Month. That evening, we will be honoring Hortense Alper for her continued support of our Choir and the donation of our beautiful Steinway Piano. Lillian and I have chosen very enlightening music for this service and you won't want to miss it! A happy and health New Year to everyone! celebrates of Jewish Rabbi Akselrad and Bella Feldman Visit Del Mar Gardens Nursing Home On Monday, December 14th, Rabbi Akselrad and Bella went to Del Mar Gardens Nursing Home as part of their Annual Chanukah celebration. Rabbi explained to the residents the meaning of Chanukah and Bella lead them in song. Rabbi and Bella visit several local nursing homes on a regular basis, especially near significant Jewish holidays. Las Vegas Hebrew High: Second Successful Year Las Vegas Hebrew High is now in its second year educating post-bar/bat mitzvah young people. Sponsored by area synagogues (Temple Beth Sholom, Congregation Ner Tamid, Chabad of Southern Nevada, Congregation Adat Ari El, Temple Beth Am) and the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas, and staffed by community rabbis and other experienced teachers, LVHH's philosophy is that bar/bat mitzvah is not the end of Jewish education, but only the beginning. Our young people in grades 8 through 12 are ready for more complex inquiry into their religion, history, and culture. The days of Hebrew School "baby" stories are over, and intelligent young Jews want more depth to their education. We hope that we will provide this generation with the knowledge to become thinking Jewish adults and to take their places as future leaders of whatever community and synagogue with which they will later affiliate. We hope that pride in their heritage will enable them to hold on to their identities through high school and college, and resist outside pressures. LVHH enables young people of diverse backgrounds to listen and learn from rabbis of other denominations, thereby broadening outlooks and knowledge, in a non-threatening open atmosphere where questions are welcomed and answers are forthcoming. LVHH enables members of various Jewish youth groups (USY, NTTY, BBY/AZA, etc.) to join in common learning experiences. Social activities in the past were very successful, at times drawing over 100 young people from around Las Vegas. We hope to hold another social event in the near future, as well as special events for LVHH Students. Classes have included: Cults and Missionaries, Holidays and Traditions, American Jewish History, Hebrew, BioEthics, Beginning Talmud, Comparative Religion, Comparative Judaism, Jewish Arts, and many others. The program is continually evolving, with new classes offered when deemed appropriate. LVHH charges a very nominal fee and some scholarships are available. It is open to any Jewish student in grades 8 through 12, regardless of that student's Jewish education background. For more information on Las Vegas Hebrew High or any of its activities, please call Director Cheryl Weisberg through the Federation or at 898-1640. Sponsored by: The UAHC College Dept, and the Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute of Religion? Shalom, Your Sisterhood President Rita Moses Malkin Golden Chai Another year has ended, and with it comes the end of my two-year stint as president of Golden Chai. It has been an enriching experience for me in many ways. Primarily, I found it most gratifying to see the growth of the organization and the excellent attendance at the meetings. I'm sure it will continue to grow under the new regime. My boards for both terms have been hard-working, reliable people who made my job much easier. I sincerely thank them all. We sorely miss Ida Blumenfeld, who gave so much to Golden Chai, and we are grateful to Rose Dunn for taking over Ida's job mid-year. We can all look forward to the coming year with Ronae Fink's leadership. She is both experienced and well-organized and will surely have the full cooperation of the past and new officers. Hopefully our members will all pitch in to share the work. Every little bit you can do is a big help. Thanks to all of you for placing your confidence in me. I hope you are pleased with the results. You have my very best wishes for many more enjoyable years with Golden Chai. Shalom and love, Helen Zliser Social Action Committee The Social Action Committee of Congregation Ner Tamid is pleased to anounce our participation in the Weekend Emergency Assistance Program, co-sponsored by the Lutheran and Methodist Social Ministries. Our committee members put in approximately forty hours of volunteer service during the month of December. We assisted in the packing and distribution of food, clothing, toys, and books for needy families. During that time period, over two thousand people received some sort of aid from this worthwhile program. A special thank you is extended to those of you in the Congregation who donated what amounted to a small truckload of those I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Rabbi, the Sisterhood, and my Havurah for condolences on the loss of my dear father, Nathan Ellis. Sandy Ziskrout items for the program. We want to share with you the sincere appreciation of the clients who received your gifts, as well as the regular members of WEAP, their thanks for our joining their efforts and supplementing their food, toys, etc. If there is anyone in the Congregation who has a specific program in mind for the future, or an organization in need of our assistance, please do not hesitate to call me. Also keep us in mind if you have accumulated a lot of discarded clothing, toys, etc. We can always locate a worthy recipient. Thanks again for your help on each of our Congregational projects.
