Wilner Advisor Rabbi Sanford Akselrad Ex Oficio President's Message Another month has flown by and I realize how close to retirement I am! The Nomination Committee has presented the slate for the next two-year term and has named Jerry Gordon to be the next president. I think he is a great choice and will be a fine leader. Elections will take place on May 23, 1993, at the annual meeting. I hope everyone attends and gives some thought to volunteering for some committee so as to be involved in our congregational life. With so much going on, there has to be something for everyone. April is a busy month-the Seder at the Desert Inn being one of the first activities. I'm looking forward to seeing you there. Our facility is the host for SWFTY's Spring Conclave. Those of you who are involved with your teens in NTTY know how exciting it is for us to host about 110 young people for this weekend. April 25th is the last lecture in the Goldberg series. Our facility is greatly used and warrants our pride in being able to provide a gathering place for the needs of the Jewish community. Rabbi's Message One of my favorite questions to ask of non-Jewish groups is, "Out of a world population of over 5 billion people, how many of them do you think are Jewish?" Invariably I receive answers ranging anywhere from 50 million to 1 billion! These large numbers suggest the high visibility of Jews in Western (and in particular American) society, and the impact that we as both a religion and as a people have made on Western civilization. Both Jews and non Jews are astonished to learn that in the entire world there are only about 14-16 million Jews! How can it be that such a small people can make such an enormous contribution to society? The answer(s) to this question extend beyond a mere column, but part of the answer must lie with the emphasis among our people upon the importance of education. The holiday of Passover is a case in point. The entire seder is designed to retell to our children the story of our persecution and our fight for freedom. We are taught about an event that took place thousands of years ago, and somehow each generation of Jews finds renewed meaning in this celebration. For we have discovered that it is a strength to know our past for our history gives us a sense of who we were, who we are, and who we will become. In answering the challenge of Passover, we are taught to be a gracious people welcoming of strangers, and sensitive to other groups that suffer discrimination and persecution. These lessons have become an intregal part of what makes Judaism special. Indeed these lessons are another reason why Jews and Judaism have made such a large impact upon Western civilization. We are not a religion that sits idly by waiting for the after life or for others to bring about change. We are taught through our holidays, and the teachings of the Torah that each one of us has the potential to change the world for the better. May this Passover season be for you and yours one filled with much joy and blessing. And may the lessons of Passover fill your household with a renewed appreciation for being Jewish. Last Lecture in Goldberg Series: April 25th "Congress and Israel After the Election" Prof. Steve Spiegel 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Aprril 25, 1993 Congregation Ner Tamid The Dr. Harry L. Goldberg Jewish Lecture Series of the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas proudly announces the final lecture in this season's schedule. On Sunday evening, April 25th, 1993, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Congregation Ner Tamid, our Guest Speaker will be Professor Steve Spiegel. His topic will be: "Congress and Israel After the Election." Professor Spiegel teaches Political Science at UCLA and is author of "The Other Arab-Israeli Conflict: Making Americas's Middle East Policy, from Truman to Reagan." He is frequently consulted by the media to discuss current world events, especially as they relate to U.S. policy in the Middle East. Due to the generosity of our sponsors, this series is free of charge and open to the public. For additional information, call: Beverly Eisen, Community Relations Director at the Jewish Federation Office, 732-0556. Cantor's Comer Purim Family Services proved to be a wonderful experience for everyone who attended. We had an incredible turnout and I have heard nothing but good about the new material introduced this year. There has been a revolution in Jewish music and I am just beginning to explore all there is to offer. Our third grader's performed a new piece of Purim music, "Cowboy Purim," written by Doug Cotier. They all looked so cute in their western wear and had a great time! At the end of the February I had the wonderful opportunity of attending my second Mid-Winter Conference of the American Conference of Cantors and Guild of Temple Musicians. This year's Conference was held in Scottsdale, Arizona and some of what you heard at the Purim service, I brought back from my peers. I can't tell you how thrilling it is to be with 40 other Cantors singing after every meal, on the buses, at midnight in meeting rooms, and basically whenever the chance arises. Everyone was so helpful and willing to share ideas about their B'nai Mitzvah programs, musical events, curriculum and most anything I asked about. This type of education isn't easily found and I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to attend this Conference! This month Lori and I will be working on Passover music with the Religious School. Remember: NO JUNIOR CHOIR UNTIL APRIL 25. Rabbi and I will also be leading a Tot Shabbat service on March 27. These services are a perfect introduction to the holidays for the little ones. Looking forward to seeing you at our Passover Seder! Shalom, Bella Oneg Shabbat to Honor Graduating Seniors On May 7th there will be an Oneg Shabbat to honor all seniors who are graduating high school. Families who would like to share in this "Simcha" are invited to join those who are sponsoring the Oneg. MIY Convention 1993 In February, the North American Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY) held a convention in Newark, New Jersey. Judy Kollins, the Vice President of NTTY, and I represented Ner Tamid at this gathering of 600 Jewish teens. The convention included many amazing events. Meeting Jews from Mississippi to Argentina and listening to fantastic speakers such as the head of the UAHC and the president of the National Federation of Sisterhoods made the convention unbelievable. The highlight of the convention for me was having dinner at Ellis Island. Feeling the pain and excitement of our ancestors made me and many of my new friends very emotional. I would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Ner Tamid's Sisterhood and Brotherhood, the Youth Activities Committee, and the Rabbi for their support and commitment to NTTY and all its endeavors. B'Shalom Andrew C. Gratz NTTY President? Congregation Ner Tamid 9 ? They are good until May 31, 1993. They cost $19.95. Call the Temple to order. You have received your "Yellow Candle" by now. Please light it on Saturday Evening, April 17th, in memory of the Holocaust. Your donation for the candle will be used in repairing the Temple's Torahs. Next Brotherhood meeting is Thursday, April 8th, 7 p.m. at the Temple. The Social Action Committee continues to be active in pursuing new projects. During the month of March, several committee members led by David Stahl participated in a Model Seder with an adult education class of the University United Methodist Church. All of those in attendance were introduced to the concept of a Passover Seder, read through the Haggadah, and tasted many of the symbolic foods prepared by committee members. It was an excellent learning experience for all of those who attended. During March, we also made a large donation of food, diapers, and clothing to the Weekend Emergency Assistance Project. They were very appreciative. Several congregants also donated books and these will be distributed to an appropriate source, either in Israel or in this country. Thank you to all of you who participated. There are several other future programs under discussion as well, including a special Shabbat for Aids Awareness, offering assistance to Jews in prison in the State of Nevada, and encouraging our B'nai Mitzvah students and their parents to incorporate a social action project within the context of their special simcha. We are hoping to have voter registration at next year's congregational sukkah as well. If you have any ideas for Social Action programs or are interested in joining our committee, please leave your name at the office or call me.
