RABBI?S MESSAGE There is a legend told about Rabbi Hillel and Rabbi Shamai. According to the story both Rabbis were approached by a potential convert to Judaism. The man asked the Rabbis to explain the entire Torah while standing on one foot. Rabbi Shamai who was not known for his great patience pushed the man out with a stick. Rabbi Hillel on the other hand was not only a man of patience, but great wisdom as well. When the potential convert came to him. Rabbi Hillel said, ?That which you hate, do not do to your neighbor. That is the whole Torah.? Many of us are familiar with this midrash, but have forgotten the very end of the story. Hillel added one more thought: ?All the rest is commentary. GO AND STUDY!? This final thought is most revealing of all. For it reminds us that though we seek simple answers to our religion and our faith, answers come only through a process of study and commitment. Nothing in life that is important is as simple as memorizing a few words ?while standing on one foot.? The Torah? Judaism ?to be relevant needs to reflect the human condition and also serve as a guide to human experience. I can think of no better example than that of our 12 adult B?nai Mitzvah students this year. Each one of them has come to their studies with their own reasons for wanting a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Each has worked very hard to achieve this goal. For some there was a regret of never having had a chance to have a Bar/Bat Mitzvah. For others, it is a chance to revisit a decision made in youth that they now wish to alter. And for still others, indeed for all?it is an important step along a deeply personal journey of committment and faith. Please join with us Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. onJune 11th to bear witness to this grand commitment to Torah. It will be a Shabbat to remember, and one in which we as a Congregation can be duly proud. B?Shalom, Sanford D. As such, it seems appropriate to briefly report to you as to our accomplishments over the past year and our goals for the coming year. Obviously, the most visible accomplishment has been the announcement of our Sanctuary Campaign and the solicitation of over $1 million of our $1.5 million goal. Building plans are being prepared and we hope to schedule the ground-breaking for the very near future. Our membership and program has continued to grow by leaps and bounds. 1 anticipate growing to 500 families by the High Flholidays and we project 225 children in our religious school at the beginning of the next school year. Our preschool continues to grow and prosper. In addition to the very visible accomplishments listed above, your Board of Trustees has begun to address more fundamental issues as the Congregation continues to expand. For instance, the manner in which the Congregation meets its financial needs is evolving. We need to rely more upon dues and fees to meet our budgetary needs and less upon the uncertainty of fund-raising events. We are making less demands upon the membership to participate in fund-raising events and providing more educational, religious and social programs at nominal or no additional cost to the Congregation. Similarly, the Ritual and the Ad Hoc Ritual Committees have been and will continue to address the most fundamental role of both Jews and non-Jews in our Temple. This includes such varied issues as membership for non-Jews, the extent of participation by non-Jews in services and temple governance and the operation of the gift shop. It is a special privilege to be called to the Bima to participate in the Sabbath Service. At most Friday night services, congregants can participate in a special way by accepting honors to be proud of, such as lighting the Shabbat candles, opening and closing the doors of the Sacred Ark, dressing and undressing the Torah, and to have the Aliyah and bless the Torah. If any congregant wishes to have such honors, contact Ronae Fink at 733-6292. If you are unfamiliar with the Hebrew prayers, assistance is available. Contact Ronae and she will be pleased to help teach you all the appropriate blessings. Participate in Shabbat Services. The High Holidays are fast approaching. As you all know, in order to provide the service and services we have all come to expect from our staff, it is incumbent upon all of us to keep our dues and other obligations up to date. It is the policy of CNT that all prior year dues be paid and that at least three fourths (3/4) of the 1994 dues be paid prior to the Holidays. In addition we will be having our annual Kol Nidre appeal. Those of you who have attended Friday evening services recently have sat in chairs that are a direct result of last years? drive and more chairs are on the way! Some of you have also noticed the new parking strips in our lot. You have also begun receiving computerized statements. Our new Membership Management program is responsible. Finally is the imminent ground-breaking for our new Sanctuary. A most exciting event! All of this is a direct result of our congregants. When you request services of the temple we want to respond. This can only be done with your help. Many of you will be going away on vacations for the summer. Enjoy!! Remember, however, the High Holidays are early this year (right after Labor Day). CNT will be working to ensure that we gain all we want at this time. COMMITTEES & AUXILIARIES SISTERHOOD NEWS This is my final article as president of Sisterhood It has been a very interesting productive year, thanks to the efforts of so many of our officers and members. Undoubtedly our greatest success has been in the area of fundraising. The Party Shop, that was started about 2 years ago, has really taken off this year. Under the capable leadership of Rita Malkin and Frances Klamian and with help from such talented workers as Mcdka Rosenberg, Diane Brady, Shirley Gellin, Ronae Fink Idie & Harper Klamian, Amy Gold, Phyllis Mark Sandy Ewan, etc. They have been providing food for all of the temple Junctions and even some events away from temple. The Party Shop has become a thriving business and important source of our income. The gift shop has also prospered thanks to Joy Willey and Susan Saskin. They have kept an appealing inventory at reasonable prices. Another major fundraiser has been the Scrip program under the direction of Marlene Sherman. We have recently turned the project back to the temple, but Marlene will continue to manage it. Finally, the Sisterhood calendar continues to be a source of revenue due to the advertisers. Phyllis Lewis had handled the calendar for a fewyears. She has agreed to do so again this year in memory of Sophie Pisetsky, who was always a hard-working member of Sisterhood This year?s calendar will be our tribute to Sophie. Of course Sisterhood is not just a fundraising organization, but our funds enable us to be of help to the temple along with our other services. At the present time we are planning to add air-conditioning to the kitchen, where it is badly needed We try to give a major gift to the temple each year, and this year we also contributed toward the construction of a larger and nicer gift shop. We made a sizeable contribution to the Campership program, thanks to the addition of Melissa Glovinsky to our ranks. We have held our annual events - the Hannukah Bazaar, the Progressive Dinner, the Paid-Up Member party and the Sisterhood Shabbat service - all capably handled by board members Debbie McKinnon, Sandy Fried Debra Cohen, Eileen Kollins, Sandy Ewan, etc. And lest we forget - our secretaries, treasurer, donor chair, tribute chairs and the rest, have all made major contributions. I owe a big thanks to them: June Newmaric, Libby Raynes, Debbie Gold Janis Round Ronae Fink, Phyllis Marie and Betty Schloss. And of course, Rose Dunn who helps in many ways. / also want to express my appreciation to Rabbi Akselrod, Sandy Ziskrout, Amy Gold and Frances Klamian for the wonderful programs they presented at our general meetings. Everyone who attended those meetings expressed high praise. In closing, I want to say that this has been a rewarding year for me in many ways. I wish the incoming president, Maxine Grate, and her new board a successful and enjoyable tenure. Love and shalom to you all? Lenny Gropman Donn Smylie Roger Ewan Gerry Davis Jay Poster David Stahl Martin Grower Scott Dockmiller Ed Goldman Allan Nathanson A Special Place To Belong * Congregation Ner Tamid 9 * COMMITTEES & AUXILIARIES The Fast of Tammuz (17th of June) is upon us ? Do we know why we fast? It is necessary? It is reported that Moses descended from Mount Sinai after the magic 40 days carrying the carved stone tablets. But the Israelites had lost their faith and were found worshipping the Golden Calf! In anger and dismay, Moses smashed the tablets. Of course, it is obvious, that he either used ?Insta Glue? or he and G-d manufactured new tablets. When we look at our families and our country today, and we watch the 5:00 p.m. news do you think if Moses were with us today he would even bother with the second set of tablets? Are we still worshiping the Golden Calf? So much mayhem, so much dishonor, so much genocide, so little family, such loss of faith. Everything seems to be measured by the $ sign. A price for morals, for family values, for loyalty, for commitment. Maybe we should celebrate the 17th of June by fasting and prayer. Perhaps with a renewed bond with G-d, a new surge of faith we could reverse this chaotic way of life. Try repeating our ten commandments - hear what they say... When you remember all 10, you realize they really make more sense today, and they are worth more than any amount of gold.
