Wilner Founda?tion Achieve?ment Award For the past two years, and especially the past few months, I along with a small group of interested congregants have forged ahead to make a Preschool a reality at our Temple. We have researched programs, we have raised money, we have held preparatory programs to generate interest, we have surveyed the congregation, and we have met with a whole host of inspectors and bureaucrats who must approve licensing for such an endeavor. Having spear headed this project I must confess that no training in rabbinical school ever prepared me for the litany of delays and issues involved in setting up a preschool! I persevered because I have felt all along that the establishment of a preschool would be the next logical step in the building of our Temple program. I am proud to announce that on May 21st, 1991 we received our final approval from the Clark County Commissioners to open up a Preschool this fall!!! Beginning this September our Temple will open up a three day a week Preschool (M-W-F) which will be open 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. This program will be geared for children 3 - 5 years of age. The monthly fee will be very competitive with existing community programs. In addition the school will be open to the community (although non-Temple members will pay a slightly higher fee). The curriculum will focus on age appropriate secular subjects for the children (i.e. learning numbers, colors, art, manners, etc.) but will definitely be a Jewish preschool. The children will learn melodies for Jewish holidays, and receive a basic introduction to the customs and meanings of the Holidays and what it means to be Jewish. On a personal level I look forward to seeing the children on Shabbat with a special story because I know that children ?s images of a Rabbi and what a Temple is are formed very early on. We will seek to create the most vibrant, creative and special Preschool in the city!!! Towards this end I am proud to announce that our religious President's Message The Wilner Foundation grants are made to recognize, distinguish, honor, and reward outstanding Jew?ish youth for their religious commit?ment and their social action aimed at enhancing the community in which they live. The grant is considered an Achievement Award. The award is given to financially assist the recipient youth to partici?pate in activities such as summer camp, day camp, enrichment classes or seminars, travel to a Kinnus, travel to Israel with an organized pilgrim?age, or scholarly projects. The award amount is given in the name of the recipient directly to the organization or school providing the activity for which the grant is made. Contact the Temple office for ap?plications at 733-6292. (cont. on page 3) New Members Jacqueline Fleetwood Dr. & Mrs. Alan Boruszak Mr. & Mrs. Seymour Motin Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Rodgers As I write my final President?s Message, many thoughts go through my mind. The past eighteen months have held a variety of experiences, challenges, and occasional disappointments. Ner Tamid has continued to grow in strength and numbers, as our religious, educational, and social activities gain in breath and depth. The Rabbi, as well as all of our office and school staff, show a diligence and dedication far beyond their job descriptions and salaries. The Board of Directors has been hardworking and supportive. Many of our members have worked on various events in a variety of capacities. The number of hours volunteered in service to our synagogue is impossible to calculate. But, each and every one of your efforts have been appreciated, even if they have not been publicly recognized. Thank you to the congregation for the opportunity to serve you to the best of my ability. Thank you also to my children for their patience through each meeting, phone call, Temple function, and crisis. As in all things, my presidency has been a joint effort, worth the time and sacrifice. My hope is that we continue to be a congregational family, caring about each other and striving to practice our Judaism and tikun olam, the improvement of the world. As the wise Talmudic scholar, Bob Hope, once said, ?Thanks for the memories! Shalom, Eileen President Page 2 B'not Mitzvah My name is HARPER KLAMIAN, and on Friday, June 14th, I will become a Bat Mitzvah. I am currently a 7th grader at Woodbury Jr. High. My favorite subject is Math. My major interests are sewing and designing. I hope to be a fashion designer one day. I am also very concerned about protecting the animals of our planet... we should all work together to help our needy friends. My name is IDIE KLAMIAN, and on Friday, June 14th, I will become a Bat Mitzvah. I am currently a 6th grader at Quannah McCall. My favorite subjects are Math and Music. I am in the Chorus, and I enjoy singing. One of my major concerns is the environment. We must all start today to save our planet. Goods & Service Auction A Major Success On Saturday evening, May 11th, over 250 members and non-members attended the Temple?s first ?Goods & Services Auction?. Beginning with a fabulous desert buffet, everyone circled the room placing their bids on the silent auction items. At around 8:00 p.m. Bob Deiro, of Deiro & Associates, took the auction block. With his able assistance this was one of our most successful fund raising events. Some of the marvelous items donated and auctioned were: trips to Cancun, Jamaica and Hawaii; a reserved parking space at Temple; a day on Lake Mead complete with lunch; a gourmet dinner for 8, including wine and flowers, served in your home; and golf for four at Los Prados Country Club. This was a fun evening for everyone. In fact comments of ?this was great? and ?I can?t wait to do this again next year? re?sounded throughout the hall. And just to accommodate our enthusiastic supporters, mark your calendar NOW for next year?s 2ND ANNUAL GOODS & SERVICES AUCTION on May 9th, 1992. Special Thanks... to all who made the Goods & Service Auction a huge success! The donations of time, work, goods, and services are all much appreciated. Thanks to your efforts, many were able to enjoy the evening, not to mention the good it did for the Temple. Thanks Again!!! Rabbi?s Message (cont. from page 2) School Principal, Jeannie Schoemaker?s position has been expanded. Among Jeannie?s many talents she is also a licensed Preschool Director and will oversee our Preschool as well. What is left to be done?... A great deal! We need your help. If you have been saving those toys and games in anticipation of the opening of our school, NOW is the time to clean out those closets. We can not promise that every item donated will find a place in the school, but we promise that those not used will be given to good homes and needy children. In addition, opening the school will be very expensive. If you have not donated to the Preschool fund, please do so now. If you have already given, consider giving again. Your support is needed now. We have already begun lining up staff for the fall, however if you are interested in teaching in our school, please let Jeannie know. We will not know how many Teachers to hire until we can get a better handle on our enrollment. Which leads me to my final point... Send your children to our school!!! Our program will be a success only if you support it. I can promise you a safe and loving environment for your children. And you will be able to take pride in starting something wonderfully new for our Temple. Many have worked hard to bring us to this point. I look forward to the fulfillment of a special dream this fall: the sound of little children with words of Torah on their lips. Please help make this dream a reality. B?shalom, Sanford D. There was a great deal of audi?ence participation which was re?warded by numerous door prizes contributed by Riva. We sincerely appreciate her generosity. At this writing we are look?ing forward to a visit from Las Vegas columnist Joe Behar, pia?nist Pauline Livenstein (101 years young), and a discussion about resolving disputes given by me?diator Charlotte Kiffer. We are indeed fortunate to have access to the talents of so many wonderful Las Vegans who donate their time and energy to entertain and/or educate us. At the May meeting of the Temple Board, a donation of five- hundred dollars was made to Congregation Ner Tamid by Golden Chai. It gave us a feeling of great pride to be able to share in the support of the Temple be?cause of the efforts of our seniors. Our membership continues to grow at each meeting. Atten?dance remains high, which lets us know that the members enjoy coming. Our special groups: the Yiddish class, the Support Group for Widowed, and the Crafts Group are also doing well. We also have an increasing number of card games. In addition, we are planning more outings and trips. We hope all of the Temple seniors will join us in our exciting activi?ties.
