Jerry Crawford was born on August 20, 1934 in Iowa. He earned a scholarship to Drake University for baseball. He graduated from Drake with a bachelor's in theatre, and went on to earn a master's degree from Stanford as well as a Ph.D. in playwriting from University of Iowa.

Jerry Crawford taught theatre at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) for thirty-two years and was chair and dean of the theatre department. He is responsible for founding UNLV's Master of Fine Arts in Playwriting, retiring in 1994 as a Professor Emeritus and a Barrick Distinguished Scholar. He was also the director of seminars for the Utah Shakespeare Festival as well as the Dean of the College of Fellows of the American Theatre at the Kennedy Center.

Jerry Crawford passed away on March 20, 2016.
